This paper reviews some recent advances in the theory and applications of morphological image analysis. Regarding applications, we show how the morphological filters can be used to provide simple and systematic algorithms for imageprocessing and analysis tasks as diverse as nonlinear image filtering, noise suppression, edge detection, region filling, skeletonization, coding, shape representation, smoothing, and recognition. Regarding theory, we summarize the representation of a large class of translation-invariant nonlinear filters (including morphological, median, order-statistic, and shape recognition filters) as a minimal combination of morphological erosions or dilations; these results provide new realizations of these filters and lead to a unified image algebra.

advances in the area of digital chest radiography have resulted in the acquisition of high-quality images of the human chest. With these advances, there arises a genuine need for imageprocessing algorithms specific to the chest, in order to fully exploit this digital technology. We have implemented the well-known technique of histogram equalization, noting the problems encountered when it is adapted to chest images. These problems have been successfully solved with our regionally adaptive histogram equalization method. With this technique histograms are calculated locally and then modified according to both the mean pixel value of that region as well as certain characteristics of the cumulative distribution function. This process, which has allowed certain regions of the chest radiograph to be enhanced differentially, may also have broader implications for other imageprocessing tasks.

A close look is taken across the globe at the current state of narrowband and wideband telematics. Current market acceptance of services and their associated terminals, services research in the world's communication laboratories, and technology advances in speech and imageprocessing that are likely to affect future evolution of telematics are described. Present-day experiences with new services are summarized, exploratory development efforts are described, and insights are offered into what the authors believe to be the remaining key problems, technological, market, or economic, that stand in the way of large-scale use of telematics.

Recent advances in spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution of civil land remote sensing satellite data are presenting new opportunities for image mapping applications. The U.S. Geological Survey's experimental satellite image mapping program is evolving toward larger scale image map products with increased information content as a result of improved imageprocessing techniques and increased resolution. Thematic mapper data are being used to produce experimental image maps at 1:100,000 scale that meet established U.S. and European map accuracy standards. Availability of high quality, cloud-free, 30-meter ground resolution multispectral data from the Landsat thematic mapper sensor, along with 10-meter ground resolution panchromatic and 20-meter ground resolution multispectral data from the recently launched French SPOT satellite, present new cartographic and imageprocessing challenges. The need to fully exploit these higher resolution data increases the complexity of processing the images into large-scale image maps. The removal of radiometric artifacts and noise prior to geometric correction can be accomplished by using a variety of imageprocessing filters and transforms. Sensor modeling and image restoration techniques allow maximum retention of spatial and radiometric information. An optimum combination of spectral information and spatial resolution can be obtained by merging different sensor types. These processing techniques are discussed and examples are presented.

Recent advances in microchannel plate technology and their application to image intensification have made real-time, quantum-limited imaging a practical reality for applications in optical microscopy. Detectors employing both optical and electrical outputs allow systems to be configured for video rate or real-time data acquisition. Properly implemented in conjunction with digital imageprocessing systems, these detectors are capable of accurately imaging single photons and, through temporal accumulation, producing quantitative, high-quality images over an exceptionally wide dynamic range.
