The application of computer vision systems on industrial flotation plants has benefited considerably from advances in deep learning over the last decade, mostly based on the use of convolutional neural networks and transfer learning. More recently, vision transformers (ViTs) have attracted strong interest since their first appearance in 2017, compared to the popular convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Although becoming well-established in many areas, they have not yet been considered meaningfully in machine vision or signal processing applications in mineral processing, despite the obvious benefits that their application could realize. In this paper, it is demonstrated that ViTs are neural network architectures highly capable of discriminating between different froth flotation images. A customized ViT model and a pretrained ViT model using transfer learning were studied and compared. The former achieved satisfactory performance and the latter achieved near perfect performance, both at a significantly lower computational cost than CNNs. These results suggest that ViTs can be a competitive alternative to CNNs in the advancement of computer vision systems on industrial flotation plants. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors.

Results are presented on a resin system that can be crosslinked to yield 3D negative images that are thermally stable to temperatures greater than 300°C. The conditions needed to process films up to 15μm thick were studied. To produce microstructures in these thick films the exposure intensity must be controlled to allow adequate time for nitrogen gas, released by the diazoquinone sensitizer, to diffuse from the image region before supersaturation levels nucleate bubble defects.

There has been interest in image reversal of positive working resists. For optical and X-Ray applications, one practical advantage of image reversal is the elimination of the need of two sets of complementary masks to do positive and negative imaging. For direct write serial lithography such as electron beam and ion beam lithography, there is a great saving on writing time if the unexposed areas are much larger than the exposed areas. We report the conversion of an e-beam generated positive pattern to a negative pattern by an image reversal technique which employs the filling of the positive trenches with silicon containing materials. The surface of the planarized positive images is etched back in CF4 RIE to reveal the resist surface. A subsequent O2 RIE image transfer step completes the reversal process.

A description is given of the EPR (electron powder ribbon) method, which is used for pulling polycrystalline silicon ribbons by electron beam irradiation of silicon powder, a process used for the production of lower cost solar cells. This procedure leads to residual stresses that are damaging to the photovoltaic efficiency. Infrared photoelasticimetry, aided by bit image processing, is used to obtain a color mapping of the thermal stresses over the ribbon and consequently to determinate the best pulling conditions so as to approach linear temperature profiles.

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Signal processing and Pattern Recognition in Nondestructive Evaluation (NOE) of Materials was held August 19-22, 1987 at the Manoir St-Castin, Lac Beauport, Quebec, Canada. Modern signal processing, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence have been playing an increasingly important role in improving nondestructive evaluation and testing techniques. The cross fertilization of the two major areas can lead to major advances in NOE as well as presenting a new research area in signal processing. With this in mind, the Workshop provided a good review of progress and comparison of potential techniques, as well as constructive discussions and suggestions for effective use of modern signal processing to improve flaw detection, classification and prediction, as well as material characterization. This Proceedings volume includes most presentations given at the Workshop. This publication, like the meeting itself, is unique in the sense that it provides extensive interactions among the interrelated areas of NOE. The book starts with research advances on inverse problems and then covers different aspects of digital waveform processing in NOE and eddy current signal analysis. These are followed by four papers of pattern recognition and AI in NOE, and five papers of image processing and reconstruction in NOE. The last two papers deal with parameter estimation problems. Though the list of papers is not extensive, as the field of NOE signal processing is very new, the book has an excellent collection of both tutorial and research papers in this exciting new field.

This is the sixth conference in the series which started in 1981 in Paris, followed by conferences held in Zurich (1984), Rio de Janeirio (1987), Barcelona (1991), and Raleigh (1993). The main objective of this IFIP conference series is to provide a platform for the exchange of recent and original contributions in communications systems in the areas of performance analysis, architectures, and applications. There are many exiciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in Asynchronous Transfer Mode·(ATM), multimedia services, and high speed protocols. It is commonly believed in the communications industry that ATM represents the next generation of networking. Yet, there are a number of issues that has been worked on in various standards bodies, government and industry research and development labs, and universities towards enabling high speed networks in general and ATM networks in particular. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the Sixth IFIP W.G. 6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and proposing various state of the art solutions to a subset of them. The program includes 25 papers selected by the program committee out of 57 papers submitted.

Liberation of valuable minerals from their gangue matrices depends on the physical properties of the ore, as well as the features of the process used to extract these minerals from the rock particulates. Despite the fact that the texture of the ore is an important predictor of liberation in an ore system, it is only recently that quantitative descriptors of the texture have been included in liberation models. These descriptors can be obtained in a variety of ways, but a general methodology has not yet been established. In this study, recent advances in quantitative ore texture analysis are reviewed and the feasibility of using state-of-the-art computer vision technology based on convolutional neural networks for ore texture analysis is considered. image processing techniques (and papers describing them) have evolved rapidly in recent years. Lately, publications in image processing have underscored advances in compression, restoration, and enhancement of gray level and color coded image information using dedicated pipeline processing and systolic array architectures. These new algorithms and specialized hardware have been developed and applied to such real-time tasks as automated testors on manufacturing lines and robotic vehicle guidance systems. Often overlooked is the part of binary image processing. A review of binary processing techniques is valuable in understanding the the basic operating principles of high-speed optical inspection devices in particular and many pipeline array processing devices in general. The class of binary image transforms covered here was originally developed for topological operations on threshold image data. These non-linear operations are based on boolean transformations of a pixel and its eight adjacent neighbors (in a discrete Cartesian plane) and are named morphological transforms by authors. A straightforward way to visualize such transforms is outlined in the paper and will be demonstrated at the conference. The demonstration program package was written using the IBM Personal Computer BASI language and was presented as an educational tool in a graduate level course in image processing. The skeletal program included in the text was enhanced to allow real-time demonstration of these transform techniques and encourages readers to experiment and develop their own lookup tables and image transforms. Understanding the function and generation of these lookup tables, which can provide any arbitrary boolean combination of the nine binary values available from a pixel and its eight Cartesian neighbors, is the key to grasping the image-transforms illustrated here. Machine vision is widely used in the monitoring of froth flotation plants as a means to assist control operators on the plant. While these systems have a mature ability to analyse physical froth features, such as the colour of the froth and bubble size distributions, research has continued to focus on their use in automated control systems, which is not well established yet. This includes functionality related to the recognition of different operational regimes, as well as their use in the inferential measurement of froth grade. The last decade has seen major breakthroughs in deep learning and advances in image processing, which have also had a direct impact on flotation froth image analysis with computer vision systems. In this paper, these advances are reviewed and future trends are identified. Convolutional neural networks that are able to learn features from froth images have redefined the state-of-the-art in froth image analysis. These models rely heavily on transfer learning, with models such as GoogLeNet and MobileNet leading in the field. Emerging trends comprise a stronger focus on dynamic froth image analysis or the analysis of froth video sequences, froth-based monitoring, exploitation of froth features in advanced control and one-shot learning approaches based on froth image synthesis. Challenges are related to the labelling of images, the computational cost associated with training deep neural networks, as well as interpretation of these models.

Positive photoresists containing a dissolution inhibitor as the photoactive compound (PAC) are potentially high resolution materials. For the case of PAC materials with two or more diazonaphthoquinone (DAQ) groups attached to the same ballast molecule (a poly-DAQ PAC), the DAQ groups can photolyze essentially independently in a sequential manner to form a distribution of photoproducts containing both DAQ groups and indene-carboxylic acid groups (ICA) bonded to the ballast molecule, and ultimately, a poly-ICA photoproduct. Equations are deduced for the concentrations of these photoproducts with dose. Dissolution rate is taken to be a function of the relative contributions of each photoproduct to the dissolution rate. Polyphotolysis is experimentally demonstrated for a resist with ideal selectivity. Analytical expressions for approximate treatment of gamma, E0 and absorption are given as a function of PAC functionality.
