As a recognition method that does not require target cooperation, gait recognition has significant value in the criminal investigation field. As the gait recognition network's input, the gait silhouette occupies a large storage space and low information density, which leads to a high demand for hardware in the gait recognition system. We proposed a compressing gait silhouette method based on the graphical edge, which extracts silhouette edges and combines them into a gait silhouette edge image. Storage space has been reduced by 90.6%, and information density has increased from 4.64% to 49.48%-71.09%. Since the new image is not applicable to the original network, we proposed the improved network GSEInet of GaitSet. The experimental results show that using our compressed images can reduce the network running time by 91.1%, and the demand for graphics card memory by 48.8%, while the recognition rate will not decrease. This will help transplant gait recognition tasks from large servers to small embedded devices and improve flexibility. © 2023 SPIE.

The dark channel prior (DCP) is a classic algorithm in the field of image defogging, but there are problems such as halo effect, color distortion, and poor handling of sky regions. To address these problems, an image defogging algorithm is proposed to improve the dark channel prior and Retinex theory strategic fusion. The algorithm consists of labeling the sky region of the image, completing the initial estimation of the propagation function using the dark-channel prior, and then estimating the final propagation function according to the Retinex theory, and performing the image de-fogging after fusion. The paper at the same time on the above image defogging algorithm for FPGA acceleration implementation, the experimental results show that the algorithm in the xc7a200tfbg484-2 model FPGA platform to process a frame 1200x800 size color image only takes 8.24ms. constructed defogging system to meet the effect of the defogging at the same time, but also to meet the real-time requirements of the defogging. The algorithm of the paper after the de-fogging of the detail level, contrast, saturation and other aspects of the effective enhancement, compared with the dark channel de-fogging algorithm of the global contrast and saturation enhancement ratio average value of 0.229 and 0.484, compared with other de-fogging algorithms in this field has obvious advantages. © 2024 SPIE.

Weed is one of the major causes for wheat yields reduction. Accurate and efficient classification and identification of wheat and weed could assist farmers to control weed effectively, which is of great significance for food security. This study aims to develop a novel model utilizing transfer learning methods and Faster R-CNN algorithm, combined with advanced image processing techniques to achieve automated detection, classification and identification of wheat and weed. First, dataset containing multiple species is constructed by collecting a large number of wheat and weed sample images. Then an improved deep learning model, namely the two-stage object detector Faster R-CNN, is trained and optimized to improve classification accuracy and generalization capability. Meanwhile, two traditional models different from Faster R-CNN are trained on the same dataset and evaluated using the same MS COCO metrics for comparison. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system exhibits higher accuracy compared to traditional detection models, and possesses outstanding advantages in more complex recognition environments. Thereby the system could provide significant practical value for improving wheat production quality in real-world scenarios. © 2024 SPIE.

We propose a multimodal medical image fusion method based on edge enhancement and detail preservation to address the issue of lost image details in current medical image fusion approaches. Firstly, we decompose the images from different modalities using the non-subsampled shearlet transform (NSST) to obtain their respective high-frequency and low-frequency subbands. Next, we employ a novel detail-preserving parameter adaptive pulse coupled neural network to fuse the high-frequency subbands, and an edge-enhanced weighted local energy method to fuse the low-frequency subbands. Finally, the fused image is reconstructed by performing inverse NSST on the fused high-frequency and low-frequency subbands. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method effectively preserves more detailed information from the source images and exhibits excellent performance in both subjective and objective evaluations when compared to seven commonly used multimodal medical image fusion methods. © 2024 SPIE.

Fingerprints serve as an excellent means of individual identification. This study employed transmission-mode image detection using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to produce two-dimensional fingerprint images. The research aims to develop a fingerprint pattern recognition system by integrating novel algorithms for ridge orientation analysis. The fingerprint patterns considered in this study include loops, arches, and whorls. The objective is to achieve high-resolution fingerprint patterns to analyze fingerprint variability, distinguish foreground from background regions, and trace ridge line orientations. The recognition algorithm is implemented using image processing techniques, with a preprocessing workflow that includes binarization, resizing, and histogram equalization for image enhancement. After preprocessing, the image undergoes ridge orientation analysis using the gradient method, and both similarity scores and pattern categorization were successfully achieved. The algorithm's performance was evaluated through MATLAB simulations, with results demonstrating the proposed system's accuracy and reliability across various fingerprint samples. The interferometric setup was also adapted to recognize microorganisms within a microfluidic channel, highlighting its potential applications in biometrics, forensics, and medical diagnostics. © 2025 SPIE.

With the increasing use of urban vehicles, intelligent transportation has also attracted more and more attention. License plate location technology is a very important technology in intelligent transportation. First, the interference factors and noise in the image are removed through image preprocessing, and then the license plate location is realized through rough location and accurate location. Through rough location, the license plate position can be initially positioned. Through accurate location, the license plate area can be corrected to achieve accurate location. The domestic and other regional license plates are selected for experiments. The experiments show that the method can effectively locate the license plate area accurately. © 2023 SPIE.

The innovative generation of vector graphics with fine-grained images using Artificial Intelligence has become an important task in edge extraction. In this paper, we take Qiang embroidery image as an example due to its containing fine-grained edges, which is more suitable for the study of image processing and pattern recognition. We firstly adopt appropriate pre-processing methods, improved adaptive median filtering (IAMF) for the image to reduce image noise. Then, the Xception based on convolutional neural networks is used for edge detection and extraction. Results show that Qiang embroidery images, after denoising and edge extraction, can be clearly identified the shape characteristics of the images. Based on this approach, it can be converted into vector graphics for digital preservation and further artistic reinterpretation. The use of the Xception effectively addresses Qiang embroidery extraction in two-dimensional vector images, offering a practical reference for preserving related intangible cultural heritage. © 2025 SPIE.
