Several video processing techniques with applications in video compression, shot-cut detection, mosaicing and so on are based around the mapping of the positions of feature points from video frame to video frame. This in turn is often based on the assumption that for the scene under observation, a two dimensional approximation of the structure is adequate - both in terms of motion estimation and in the subsequent use of the feature correspondences obtained from the motion estimation process. This assumption is in general false. We propose a method for motion estimation based on an active mesh. In doing so we attempt to model the motion estimation not as an unconstrained motion of feature points moving independently, but as the estimation of a set of planar patches each undergoing a 3D perspective motion. In doing so we note that our method allows us to fit to 3D metrics with a high degree of accuracy.

We apply the orthogonal Fourier-Mellin moments (OFMMs) to the specific problem of fully translation-, scale- and in-plane rotation-invariant detection of human faces in 2D static color images, and compare their performance with that of the generalized Hu's moments or non-orthogonal FMMs. The OFMMs have the advantages of non-redundancy of information, robustness with respect to noise and the ability to reconstruct the original object. Color segmentation is first performed in nine different chrominance spaces by use of two human skin chrominance models. For feature extraction in the segmented images, the same number of OFMMs are used (as for the FMMs) as the input vector to a multilayer perceptron neural network to distinguish faces from distracters. It is shown that, at least in the specific problem of face detection from segmented images, for the same set of test images, there is no significant advantage over the FMMs in using the OFMMs, and that in practice both types of moments may be used. Possible explanations for such results are presented.

Video summarization is a key component in providing Internet users a way to quickly browse a video clip in different levels of detail, without the need to view the entire video clip. We present a hybrid approach to video summary generation, which automatically process the video, creating a multimedia video summary, while providing easy-to-use interfaces for verification, correction, and augmentation of the automatically generated story segments and extracted multimedia content. Algorithms are developed to solve the sub-problems of story segmentation, story boundary refinement, and video summary generation. The use of automatic processing in conjunction with input from the user allows a user to produce meaningful video summaries efficiently.

Investigates a potential solution to the "large-population" speaker identification problem by characterizing a voice by the entailments in two different kinds of models. These entailments are found in the representational models of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and in the model of the mechanics of the voice as revealed by the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Results to date have been obtained from examining samples in the TIMIT database and human subjects. Local features correlated with individual speakers for selected vowel sounds have been found in the CWT space. Features of NLP representation systems have also been found and are compared with voice features for speakers whose NLP representation systems are known a priori. Gaussian mixture models are used to calculate probability density functions from the local feature distributions. This speaker identification strategy combines three elements of novelty. First, it exploits the fact that the 2D CWT of a 1D signal can be interpreted as an image, and can thus use feature extraction techniques first developed for image processing. Second, voice waveforms are systematically studied to identify features that are attributed to the speaker's mental representation. Third, the reliability of the identification is strengthened by combining entailments from these two completely different aspects of the speaker's identity: the mechanical aspects of the speaker's vocal tract and the pattern of representation.

We propose an effective and robust automatic face detection method which can locate the faces in natural scene images. The method can be used as a preprocessor of a face recognition system. Several approaches that use the human skin color in the images have been proposed for detecting human faces. They cannot adequately cope with the problem such as false positives, the human skin color of other body parts and face orientation. We use two natural and powerful factors, the skin color and the eyes. This method takes two steps in order to extract regions of the human skin color and the eyes in the images. In the first step of the processing, regions of the human skin color are extracted and those regions are converted into gray scale from the original image. The skin color is a fast and robust cue that can be used as the first step in a face detection. In the next step, the eyes are extracted from candidate regions by calculating central moments and by using geometrical relationships between the eyes. The position and angles between the eyes can determine the exact location of a face. Experimental results using the proposed method show that human faces can be detected in color images regardless of size, expression, lighting conditions and orientation.

Micromachined picoliter vials in silicon dioxide with a typical depth of 6.0 /spl mu/m are filled with a liquid sample. Epi-illuminated microscopic imaging during evaporation of the liquid shows dynamic fringe patterns. These fringe patterns are caused by interference between the direct part and the reflected part of an incident plane wave (reflected from the bottom of the vial). The optical path difference (OPD) between the direct and the reflected wave is proportional to the distance to the reflecting bottom of the vial. Evaporation decreases the OPD at the meniscus level and causes alternating constructive and destructive interference of the incident light resulting in an interferogram. Imaging of the space-varying OPD yields a fringe pattern in which the isophotes correspond to isoheight curves of the meniscus. When the bottom is flat, the interference pattern allows monitoring of the liquid meniscus as a function of time during evaporation. On the other hand, when there are objects on the bottom of the vial, the height of these objects are observed as phase jumps in the fringes proportional to their height. First, this paper presents the underlying optical model. Secondly, an image processing method is described to retrieve the meniscus profile from the interference pattern. This algorithm is based on estimating the wrapped (relative) phase of the fringe pattern in the recorded images. Finally, this algorithm is applied to measure height differences on the bottom in other micromachined vials with a precision of about five nanometer.

We have developed a new type of 3D measurement system which enabled one to obtain successive 3D range data at video rate with an error within /spl plusmn/0.3%. In this paper, we reconstruct realistic colored 3D surface model and 3D animation of the moving target from range images obtained by our 3D measurement system. We synthesize video images with the range images obtained by our system. A video camera is fixed on our 3D measurement system and takes video images synchronizing with the 3D measurement by it. Then, the measured 3D points are mapped onto the respective video images by means of the coordinate system transformation from the coordinate system of the 3D measurement system to that of the video camera and perspective transformation. Thus, the color and brightness of the corresponding pixel are attributed to the mapped measured 3D point. Finally, the realistic colored 3D image and animation are reconstructed through the texture mapping technique.

New architectures and components for optical target recognition at the U.S. Army aviation & missile command

Poor performance in key components has limited the development of optical target recognition systems. New components are now available, however, that exhibit size and speed characteristics compatible with image processing applications. The U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command has recently begun a program to exploit the new devices for both homing and imagery analysis applications. New architectures and algorithms which exploit the modulation characteristics of the new devices are being developed and tested. Part of the program is also aimed at funding improvements in the devices to better meet the requirements for optical target recognition. This paper will discuss the overall program specific devices under consideration, and present the architectures and algorithms under development. Any experimental results available at the time will also be presented, with more detailed results to be presented at a later conference.

This paper reports the outcome of research studies carried out by us in the area of Optical pattern recognition. A hybrid JTC architecture has been used to evaluate correlation performance of four different types of JTCs in a non-cooperative situation. A non-zero order JTC has been proposed based on the principle of differential processing of joint power spectrum and its sensitivity to illumination variation has been investigated. A hybrid wavelet transform based JTC has been proposed and demonstrated to achieve high image discrimination. Hartley transform has been introduced in joint-transform correlation. Chirp modulation in HJTC has been demonstrated to extract information on object correlation and absolute object position from correlation output. A discrimination sensitive rotation-invariant JTC has been proposed based on gradient preprocessing and circular harmonic decomposition.
