Holographic datastorage is a new opticaltechnology which allows storing an important number of bits in a recording material. In this work, two different types of modulations, defocused binary intensity modulation and phase modulation, are compared to obtain which modulation could be the most suitable for holographic datastorage. The best modulation would be the modulation with a homogeneous distribution of energy in the FT plane with no zero frequency peak.

The revolution in information technology has led the scientists to look for advanced materials to cater for the growing capacity of datastorage. Over the recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of materials, which possess smart and intelligent functions of the magnetic datastorage and handling. These magnetic materials exhibit ferroelectric, ferrielectric and anti-ferroelectric properties. There have been successful attempts to prepare semiconducting conjugated polymers as potential materials, which has potential of being used as a base material. The magnetic properties of polyaniline are achieved by suitably doping the base material. We have developed a unique and novel method for preparation of polyaniline magnetic thin films by vapor deposition of magnetic polyaniline powder on various substrates. The characterization of thin films by optical absorption, SEM, X-ray are reported here. These studies suggest that vacuum deposited magnetic polyaniline thin films are suitable for magnetic datastorage device fabrication. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a patent pending approach to store digital data using high bandwidth laser light in motion. data is stored in a loop. The amount of data stored is the data rate times the storage time. Lyteloop uses: (i) highly multiplexed optical communications to maximize data rate, and (ii) a long light path, to maximize length of time it takes light to traverse the full storage loop. Lyteloop is developing datastorage in motion in 4 domains : fiber, space, and two forms of near vacuum chambers. Multiplexing is done across very wide wavelength ranges, and many spatial modes. OEM modes will be used in free space at the shorter wavelengths, and other spatial mode structures will be used in fibers. Multiple cores will be used in fibers. A 1.5 Gigabyte demonstation datastorage unit has been built in fiber, and is described, along with its performance. We are starting a free space prototype. Lyteloop builds on, and advances, both free space, and fiber, high data rate communications technology as a method of storing data in motion. We also have patent pending approaches to increase the length of the data stroage loop. Less complex, and lower power, signal regeneration will be required to achive Lytelops's goals.

A desktop design and manufacturing system for binary diffractive elements, MacBEEP, was developed with the optical researcher in mind. optical processing systems for specialized tasks such as cellular automation computation and fractal measurement were constructed. A new family of switchable holograms has enabled several applications for control of laser beams in optical memories. New spatial light modulators and optical logic elements have been demonstrated based on a more manufacturable semiconductor technology. Novel synthetic and polymeric nonlinear materials for opticalstorage are under development in an integrated memory architecture. SBIR programs enable creative contributions from smaller companies, both product oriented and technology oriented, and support advances that might not otherwise be developed.

Rapid advances in semiconductor technology have made it possible to build massively parallel processors. In addition, optical 3D storage and optical interconnections open a new opportunity due to inherent massive parallelism and non-interference of light beams. The approaches used in current parallel database research cannot take advantage of massive parallelism which can be provided by the emerging technologies, due to speedup and scaleup limitations. In this paper, we present a computational paradigm for database machines which takes advantage of the opening opportunity for massive parallelism and discuss the validity and feasibility of the paradigm. The approach we take is based on associative computing and fine grained data parallelism which allow unlimited speedup and scaleup. Additionally, an asymptotically fast data-parallel join algorithm, which can efficiently deal with the joins in which multiple relations share a common join field, is presented. The algorithm is based on parallel sorting and parallel binary search, and performs a multiway join in O(Sigma s + Sigma log r) where s is the cost of sorting an intermediate relation and r is the size of an input relation. The Automated Patent System (APS) was designed, among other things, to assist the patent examiner in performing the patent search. It is a fully distributed system that uses custom-built high-resolution dual-display intelligent workstations, optical file servers, mainframes, and support computers networked together using Ethernet technology. The system is composed of two parts which are highly integrated: a full text search system and a patent image retrieval system. When fully deployed, APS will have an image data base of up to 30 terabytes being accessed from over 1000 workstations. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has had problems with their optical drives, and although they are fairly stable today, we still experience a moderately high hardware failure rate. The optical drive problems include media instability, hardware design errors, vendor problems, and configuration control failures. We intend to purchase additional drives in the future, and are re-evaluating the exclusive use of opticalstorage in light of recent advances in magnetic storagetechnology.

Communication to application developers and data users of CD-R characteristics such as data integrity, media reliability and life expectancy should be considered as engineers create opticalstorage media that can store more data. Though the point of view of this paper is primarily based on the views of a few experienced CD-R end-users, optical engineers should consider implementation of the following design recommendations explained in this paper. The authors' extensive experience in using CD-R technology and their substantial interaction with other CD-R users provides a rare perspective on CD-R characteristic information. Although this paper is directed to optical engineers, it is written with the expectation that a broader readership will also benefit from the information presented. The paper presents to the engineering community potential methods of communicating CD-R characteristics with an emphasis on the types of information that would be useful to CD-R users.
