Eternal memory is information encoded in some medium and capable of surviving in storage for a very long time This paper explores the rationales for an eternal memory concept for space and also develops three concepts for it using product development methodology. Historical development drivers for data storage are storage density and processing speed, while longevity of data has been limited to decades. Recent advances in storage technologies, such as optical storage and DNA storage, allow data storage for timescales of millions to billions of years. Eternal memory concepts for space are of interest to initiatives such as Lunar Mission One, the Long Now Foundation and the Human Document Project. The recent technological advances and the focused initiative of these projects produces a gap for the development of eternal memory concepts for space. The study first identifies potential stakeholders, such as Lunar Mission One, the Long Now Foundation and the Human Document Project, and categorizes stakeholders by motivation. Stakeholder needs are interpreted from statements of motivation. Stakeholders want an eternal memory concept to encourage global public engagement, to move humanity toward becoming a dual-planet species, to embrace and constrain the information age, and to allow storage of information for a very long time. These needs are arranged hierarchically for each stakeholder and the most prevalent needs are selected. Metrics are then assigned to each need. A suggested storage technology and storage location are recommended for each case study. Each storage concept attempts to add value to stakeholders, addressing financial, scientific, technological, and socio-cultural needs.

The current method of munitions systems testing uses film cameras to record airborne events such as store separation. After film exposure, much time is spent in developing the film and analyzing the images. If the analysis uses digital methods, additional time is required to digitize the images preparatory to the analysis phase. Because airborne equipment parameters such as exposure time cannot be adjusted in flight, images often suffer as a result of changing lighting conditions. Image degradation from other sources may occur in the film development process, and during digitizing. advances in the design of charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras and mass storage devices, coupled with sophisticated data compression and transmission systems, provide the means to overcome these shortcomings. A system can be developed where the image sensor provides an analog electronic signal and, consequently, images can be digitized and stored using digital mass storage devices or transmitted to a ground station for immediate viewing and analysis. All electronic imaging and processing offers the potential for improved data quality, rapid response time and closed loop operation. This paper examines high speed, high resolution imaging system design issues assuming an electronic image sensor will be used. Experimental data and analyses are presented on the resolution capability of current film and digital image processing technology. Electrical power dissipation in a high speed, high resolution CCD array is also analyzed.

Magnetic Micro Electro-mechanical Systems (Magnetic MEMS) provide transducer capabilities ranging from thin-film storage devices and micro sensors to micro actuator solutions. This paper provides an overview over magnetic thin-film devices developed at the Institute for Microtechnology at the Leibniz Universitaet Hannover's Center for Production technology (PZH) in Garbsen, Germany. In the area of data storage, it presents a microcoil for optical data storage. In the field of micro sensors it shows two inductive length measurement systems, an eddy current proximity sensor and a micro strain gauge for force measurements. Micro actuators built as linear positioners and as tilting platforms, as well as a new actuator principle based on the magnetic shape memory (MSM) effect conclude the paper copyright The Electrochemical Society.

Graphical presentation of data to support decision making has a long history, going back to the earliest use of maps and charts. Continued advances in technology have enabled development of a succession of powerful tools to support decision-making, providing visualization of geographically-referenced observations. Early geographic information systems (GIS) were succeeded by powerful (and affordable) systems. Military command and control systems, and air traffic control systems. demonstrated the value of visualization of real-time data in time-critical decision-making. Decision support systems today combine the functions of a GIS and aspects of command and control systems in a powerful and affordable context for real-time decision-making. The REINAS system is presented as a prototype of such a real-time decision-support systems exploiting real-time geographically-referenced measurements.

Holographic data storage systems (HDSS) have been a promising and very appealing technology since the first laser developments in the sixties. Impact of ongoing advances in the various components needs to be explored in its specific application to HDSS. In this sense, continuous progress is being produced in spatial light modulator (SLM) technology where parallel-addressed liquid crystal on silicon (PA-LCoS) microdisplays have replaced previous liquid-crystal displays (LCD) in most of optics and photonics applications. PA-LCoS microdisplays are well adapted to display phase-only elements without coupled amplitude. In this paper, we analyse how PA-LCoS devices can also be used to display the widely applied binary intensity modulated (BIM) data pages. We also investigate hybrid-ternary modulated (HTM) data pages, which are very much demanding on the phase and amplitude modulation properties of an SLM. HTM data pages combine the ease of detection of BIM data pages, together with a large reduction of the DC term of the Fourier Transform of the data page. This reduction is necessary to avoid saturation of the recording material dynamic range. Simulated results show the magnitude of the expected DC term in the Fourier plane. We have verified the good performance of PA-LCoS to display BIM data pages. We have also obtained that pure HTM data pages cannot be produced with PA-LCoS devices, however, a rather close performance is obtained when implementing the pseudo-HTM data pages. In this work a more complete study of pseudo-HTM modulation is offered.

The conventional inspection methods for the write-once optical disk are consist of visual method with non-destructive and recording/playback of the sampled disks with destructive. So the quality can not be assured when arrived at the customer due to lack of quality inspection. We find the new method consist of recording/playback for each disk manufactured. The recording/playback is performed at the edge area of the disk where tracks are extended. This area is not conflict with the standard and the disk can be used as a virgin disk at the customer. From the experiment, we find that the ratio of bad disks can be reduced to 0.5% from 7% with proposed method.

Tunable picosecond spin dynamics in two dimensional ferromagnetic nanodot arrays with varying lattice symmetry

The in-plane configurational anisotropy of the frequency and nature of spin-wave modes in two-dimensional artificial Ni80Fe20 nanodot lattices arranged in closely packed rectangular, honeycomb and octagonal lattices are demonstrated by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The rectangular, honeycomb and octagonal lattices showed dominant two-fold, six-fold and eight-fold variation of frequency superposed with a weak four-fold anisotropy for specific spin-wave modes with the variation of the azimuthal angle of the external bias magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the observed anisotropy is due to the angular variation of the magnetostatic field distribution and the ensuing spin-wave mode profiles, which varies between arrays. The observations are important for selecting building blocks for future magnetic data storage and magnonic crystals for on-chip microwave communication and processing.

A brief history of the evolution of the compact disc is presented. The central focus is on the development role played by the Red Book and its offspring, the Yellow Book and the Orange Book. Following the development of the disc itself came longevity claims made by manufacturers and counter claims in commercial literature. Finally, the construction of technically and statistically sound media testing methodology is traced from the early works of individuals to the refined standards representing the combined input from manufacturers, archivists and industry experts. A suggestion for further independent testing is also made.

Characterization methods of AgInSbTe based phase change optical disc are developed. Reflectivity change of as deposited multilayer structure with changing thickness is measured. The active layer thickness influence on reflectivity is compared with calculated results. We show that Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS) spectroscopy can be used to analyze the composition of the active layer. The X-ray diffraction pattern of CD-RW discs is presented, for both as deposited and initialized case. The TEM image reveals the particular crystal growth mechanism of AgInSbTe quaternary system. Written discs write power window is shown at 2X and 4X write speed.

Enabling Technologies for High-Bandwidth Applications

The grand challenges of science and industry that are driving computing and communications have created corresponding challenges in information storage and retrieval. An industry-led collaborative project has been organized to investigate technology for storage systems that will be the future repositories of national information assets. Industry participants are IBM Federal Systems Company, Ampex Recording Systems Corporation, General Atomics DISCOS Division, IBM ADSTAR, Maximum Strategy Corporation, Network Systems Corporation, and Zitel Corporation. Industry members of the collaborative project are funding their own participation. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory through its National Energy Research Supercomputer Center (NERSC) will participate in the project as the operational site and provider of applications. The expected result is the creation of a National storage Laboratory to serve as a prototype and demonstration facility. It is expected that this prototype will represent a significant advance in the technology for distributed storage systems capable of handling gigabyte-class files at gigabit-per-second data rates. Specifically, the collaboration expects to make significant advances in hardware, software, and systems technology in four areas of need, (1) network-attached high performance storage;(2) multiple, dynamic, distributed storage hierarchies;(3) layered access to storage system services;and (4) storage system management.
