advances in sensor technology, electronic devices, digital processing hardware, and computation systems have vastly increased the volume of data available for collection at scientific research sites. The Starfire optical Range of the Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate is responsible for the research and development of advanced techniques for atmospheric compensation for large telescopes. Recent experiments have been completed which encompassed more that 100TB of collected data. The collection, processing, archival, and analysis of these data required an entirely new approach for the facility staff. This paper presents the architecture, hardware and software components, integration difficulties, and performance results in a "lessons learned" format focused on specific implementation choices, interoperability lessons and issues, and results and capabilities.

The revolution in information technology has led the scientists to look for advanced materials to cater for the growing capacity of data storage. Over the recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of materials, which possess smart and intelligent functions of the magnetic data storage and handling. These magnetic materials exhibit ferroelectric, ferrielectric and anti-ferroelectric properties. There have been successful attempts to prepare semiconducting conjugated polymers as potential materials, which has potential of being used as a base material. The magnetic properties of polyaniline are achieved by suitably doping the base material. We have developed a unique and novel method for preparation of polyaniline magnetic thin films by vapor deposition of magnetic polyaniline powder on various substrates. The characterization of thin films by optical absorption, SEM, X-ray are reported here. These studies suggest that vacuum deposited magnetic polyaniline thin films are suitable for magnetic data storage device fabrication. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

By all measures, the data storage industry is one of the most important components of the Information technology (IT) revolution. In recent years, many of the emerging technologies rely heavily on energy transport at extremely short time and length scales as a mean to overcome the superparamagnetic limit - a serious impediment to future advancement of storage technology. Additionally, thermally induced failure and reliability issues at the nanoscale are becoming increasingly important due to rapid device miniaturization in data storage applications. Further advances in high-technology data storage systems will be difficult, if not impossible, without rigorous treatment of nanoscale energy transport. This manuscript reviews the thermal design issues and challenges in thermally assisted magnetic disk recording, thermally assisted scanned probe recording, phase change optical data recording, magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) and giant magnetoresistive (GMR) heads. Relevant thermally induced failures in GMR heads, write coil, interconnects and MRAM will be discussed as well. Copyright ©2002 by ASME.

Two approaches have been proposed for achieving 25-50 Gbyte capacity on one side of a 120 mm disc: using a two-element high numerical-aperture (NA) objective and using a dual-layered disc. One of the problems with these approaches is that an error in the cover-layer thickness of only a few microns can lead to serious spherical aberration. (SA). This is a particularly serious problem in dual-layered discs due to the distance between the two recording layers. Another problem is the narrow working distance (WD) of the two-element objective lens, which can result in the lens crashing onto the disc. To overcome these problems, we previously described accurate detection of and dynamic compensation for SA (Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., 40, 2001, and Proc. of SPIE, 4342, 2002) and a single-element high NA objective with a wide WD (Tech. Dig. of ISOM, 2001). In this paper, we review our related previous work and describe the latest advances. © 2002 IEEE.

High-value software functionality (such as virtual volume mapping, floating data positioning and snapshots) are key to the success of online data storage systems today and in the future. The introduction of new storage technologies that introduce advances in meta-data generation, interfaces, capacities and bandwidth without requiring installation upheaval is required. Virtualization is the mechanism that will allows the next generation of online storage to be seamlessly integrated. It also allows cost-sensitive installations to make use of alternative disk types, [such as commodity ATA (Advanced technology Attachment) drives instead of SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) or Fibre Channel drives], to be used effectively without requiring complex installation management. The principles of virtualization are described and some vendor options that incorporate these principles are discussed.

The state of the art of silicon optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) is described. It is verified that silicon OEICs achieve both high sensitivities and high bandwidths up to the GHz range. Silicon OEICs, therefore, compete successfully with III/V OEICs for low-cost high-volume applications. Results of advanced monolithically integrated photodiodes available in CMOS and BiCMOS technologies are presented. The technological aspects for the monolithic integration of photodiodes are addressed and tile properties of the so-called double photodiode and of the pin photodiode are described. Tile innovative integrated double photodiode allowing data rates of 622 Mb/s is available in standard silicon technologies without any process modification, For the integration of tile pin photodiode allowing data rates of higher than I Gb/s usually at least one additional mask is required. It will be shown that the pin photodiode also can be implemented without an additional mask. The second main part of this article covers circuits of optical fiber and interconnect receivers with data rates of up to 1 Gb/s as well as advanced DVD pick-up OEICs with bandwidths of up to 150 MHz. Tile fiber receivers achieve an effective transimpedance of 45.9 kOmega and the sensitivity of this OEIC in a 1.0 pm CMOS technology with a data rate of 1 Gb/s is improved by 9 dB compared to that of a published OEIC in a 0.35 pm CMOS technolgy.

In thisdigital age, the technology used for information storage is undergoingrapid advances. data currently being stored in magnetic or optical media will probably becomeunrecoverable within a century or less, through the combined effects of hardware and softwareobsolescence and decay of the storage medium. New approaches are required that will permit retrievalof information stored for centuries or even millennia. DNA has three properties that recommend itas a vehicle for long-term information storage. First, DNA has stood the informational "test oftime" during the billions of years since life emerged. Nonreplicating DNA molecules are also quiterobust. Although DNA stored under nonideal conditions (e.g., in archaeological deposits) is subjectto hydrolytic and oxidative damage (1), mitochondrial DNA extracted and amplified from 7000-year-oldhuman remains yielded an accurate DNA sequence (2). storage of DNA under more favorable conditionscan result in extremely long stability, as evidenced by the reported recovery of viable bacteriafrom 250-million-year-old salt crystals (3). Second, because DNA is our genetic material, methodsfor both storage and reading of DNA-encoded information should remain central to technologicalcivilizations and undergo continual improvements. Third, use of DNA as a storage medium would permiteach segment of information to be stored in an enormous number of identical molecules. Thisextensive informational redundancy would strongly mitigate effects of any losses due to stochasticdecay (4).

Volume holographic memories (VHMs) are a candidate technology for next-generation high-density and high data-rate digital storage. Capacities greater than 1 Terabit are promised, available at read-out rates exceeding 1 Gigabit per second. The capacity target will be achieved through two mechanisms. First, retrieval in a VHM reconstructs a holographic page (a two-dimensional image) captured on a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera. Each page represents on the order of one million bits of data, by encoding the data as bright and dark pixels in the 1024 x 1024 stored/retrieved image. Second, due to the thickness of the recording medium, a large number of such pages can be recorded in the same volume of material. In this dissertation we address some of the difficult technical issues that either currently limit the VHM system design, or are expected to become a limiting factor in the future. The first such concern involves how to process the simultaneous optical arrival of one million pixels. In high-density storage, there will be significant cross-talk between pixels which limits the storage capacity. We develop a novel highly-parallel focal-plane processor, which can significantly improve the system capacity by performing reliable detection in the presence of optical blur and alignment errors introduced by the imaging system. A fabricated proof-of-concept VLSI design is described. Another fundamental noise source is caused by the cross-talk between holographic pages. Reconstruction of the desired data page reconstructs every page in the memory, albeit at a very low relative diffraction efficiency. As the number of multiplexed pages increases, the cross-talk from the other pages can constitute a significant optical field noise source. Apodization seeks to either suppress this noise source or control it such that system tolerances can be relaxed. Bright data pixels are stored by altering the material properties of the crystal.
