The materials, method and for storing and accessing information in 3D by means of two-photon absorption will be described. The materials used have very high two photon absorption crosssection and near unit quantum efficiency for fluorescence. The storage devices are composed of organic molecules, uniformly dispersed in polymer matrices. The binary codes zero and one correspond to two different structures of the same molecule, induced by simultaneous absorption of two photons. The writing and accessing of the information can be performed either bit by bit or in a 2D multibit plane format. Fatigue studies suggest that these materials are suitable for 3D storage devices. Automated recording and readout 3D systems have been constructed and characterized. Channel error sources have been identified, and a custom spatial bit-error-rate test has been developed.

Graphical presentation of data to support decision making has a long history, going back to the earliest use of maps and charts. Continued advances in technology have enabled development of a succession of powerful tools to support decision-making, providing visualization of geographically-referenced observations. Early geographic information systems (GIS) were succeeded by powerful (and affordable) systems. Military command and control systems, and air traffic control systems. demonstrated the value of visualization of real-time data in time-critical decision-making. Decision support systems today combine the functions of a GIS and aspects of command and control systems in a powerful and affordable context for real-time decision-making. The REINAS system is presented as a prototype of such a real-time decision-support systems exploiting real-time geographically-referenced measurements.

Multimedia system design presents challenges from the perspectives of both hardware and software. Each media in a multimedia environment requires different processes, techniques, algorithms and hardware implementations. Multimedia processing which necessitates real time digital video, audio, and 3D graphics processing is an essential part of new systems as 2D graphics and image processing was in current systems. Multimedia applications require efficient VLSI implementations for various media processing algorithms. Emerging multimedia standards and algorithms will result in hardware systems of high complexity. In addition to recent advances in enabling VLSI technology for high density and fast circuit implementations, special investigation of architectural approaches is also required. In the past few years, multimedia hardware design has captured the most attentions among researchers. New programmable processors, highspeed storage and modern parallelism techniques are among the variety of subjects, which are being addressed in this domain. A detailed categorization of available multimedia processing strategies is required to help designers in adapting these techniques into new architectures. Some of important options in multimedia hardware design include: processor structure, parallelization and granularity, data distribution techniques, instruction level parallelism memory interface and flexibility. In this paper, we address important issues in the design of a programmable multimedia processor.

Case for automated tape in clinical imaging

Electronic archiving of radiology images over many years will require many terabytes of storage with a need for rapid retrieval of these images. As more large PACS installations are installed and implemented, a data crisis occurs. The ability to store this large amount of data using the traditional method of optical jukeboxes or online disk alone becomes an unworkable solution. The amount of floor space, number of optical jukeboxes, and off-line shelf storage required to store the images becomes unmanageable. With the recent advances in tape and tape drives, the use of tape for long term storage of PACS data has become the preferred alternative. A PACS system consisting of a centrally managed system of RAID disk, software and at the heart of the system, tape, presents a solution that for the first time solves the problems of multi-modality high end PACS, non-DICOM image, electronic medical record and ADT data storage. This paper will examine the installation of the University of Utah, Department of Radiology PACS system and the integration of automated tape archive. The tape archive is also capable of storing data other than traditional PACS data. The implementation of an automated data archive to serve the many other needs of a large hospital will also be discussed. This will include the integration of a filmless cardiology department and the backup/archival needs of a traditional MIS department. The need for high bandwidth to tape with a large RAID cache will be examined and how with an interface to a RIS pre-fetch engine, tape can be a superior solution to optical platters or other archival solutions. The data management software will be discussed in detail. The performance and cost of RAID disk cache and automated tape compared to a solution that includes optical will be examined.

The past ten years have seen a virtual revolution for the optoelectronics industry dealing with LEDs. With the development of new III-V materials, such as AlGaAs, AlInGaP, and InGaN, and epitaxial structures capable of very efficient visible light generation, a vast new field of applications for LEDs has opened. The most recent development has been the introduction of bright blue and green LEDs based on InGaN. This now makes coverage of the entire color spectrum possible, from red to violet at brightness and efficiency levels exceeding conventional filament light sources. Full-color large screen video displays with excellent color rendition and brightness and even white light LEDs are being produced. Semiconductor lasers have also benefitted from progress with InGaN technology, and have been demonstrated with emission wavelengths around 400 nm. The primary importance of these devices is in the area of CD data storage, where the short wavelength increases storage density by approximately a factor of four over current systems using a red AlInGaP or infrared AlGaAs laser. Despite these advances, we have barely begun to see the possibilities for LEDs. Continuing improvements in materials and device efficiency and light extraction techniques are set to raise performance limits by at least a factor of two for InGaN and AlInGaP devices over the next few years. This presentation focuses on the advances that have been achieved with InGaN materials technology and the types of devices that have been created. Current applications and possible future use for high performance blue LEDs and lasers are also discussed.

Over the last decade, the video camera has become a common diagnostic/tool for many scientific, industrial and medical applications. The amount of data collected by video capture systems can be enormous. For example, standard NTSC video requires 5 MBytes/sec, with many groups wanting higher resolution either in bit-depth, spatial resolution and/or frame speed. Despite great advances in video capture systems developed for the mass media and teleconferencing markets, the smaller markets of scientific and industrial applications have been ignored. This is primarily due to their need to maintain the independent nature of each camera system and to maintain the high quality of the video data. Many of the commercial systems are capable of digitizing a single camera (B/W or color) or multiple synchronized B/W cameras using an RGB color video capture chip set. In addition,most manufacturers utilize lossy compression to reduce the bandwidth before storing the data to disk To address the needs of the scientific community, a high-performance data and video recorder has been developed. This system utilizes field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to control the analog and digital signals and to perform realtime lossless compression on the incoming data streams. Due to the flexibility inherent in the system, it is able to be configured for a variety of camera resolutions, frame rates and compression algorithms. In addition, alternative general purpose data acquisition modules are also being incorporated into the design. The modular design of the video/data recorder allows the carrier components to be easily adapted to new bus technology as it becomes available or the data acquisition components to be tailored to a specific application. Ten years ago, as rewritable optical disk products were first being introduced into the marketplace, it was common to compare magnetic and optical disk technologies in terms of their areal density metric, and to speculate about the demise of magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs) because ofthe superior densities of optical disk drives (ODDs). Now, in 1997, we can look back with a quite different perspective about the HDD funeral which never occurred, and about the relative roles which have been carved out for HDDs and ODDs. Of greater interest, we can also look forward with an eye to the likely evolution of these devices for the next ten to fifteen years. HDD technology has survived and prospered because it aggressively advanced on several parallel fronts: areal density, volumetric density, reliability and, simultaneous with and deriving from all these advances, rapidly declining end user cost. These advances made it exceedingly difficult for ODDs to capture significant market share from HDDs via a direct frontal assault. As history has played out so far, ODD products have succeeded only in those market niches where they have exploited their unique capabilities: removability with random access (as in jukebox library systems), and mass information replication and distribution (as in CD-ROMs). For HDDs, future progress means continuing to advance areal and volumetric density and performance, while continuing to drive costs down. For ODDs, future progress also means continuing to advance capacities and to decrease costs, but as it has in the past, ODD technology will need to play to its own unique strengths. Clearly one route to capacity advances will be to continue to decrease the diffraction limited optical spot size through use of shorter wavelength lasers and higher numerical aperture optics.

RAID technology advances to the next level

In the past, RAID users have often been forced to pay a high price for data security. This price tag has included mediocre performance, administrative headaches, and significant expense. In the recent months, the face of RAID has begun significant transformation with a new technology called adaptive RAID. Adaptive RAID combines significant firmware and hardware advances to make RAID technology faster, easier to use, and network extendible. The new technology allows automatic conversion between RAID levels and automatic restriping of logical drives without stopping system usage. Adaptive RAID also allows for greater flexibility and management by the system administrator.
