Information storage in DASDs is a key part of a computer system. The worldwide revenue opportunity for DASD products is more than $50 billion. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in capacity, performance, and cost-savings, rapid technological advances in magnetic recording have been carried out in laboratories around the world. The recent development for laptop and notepad PCs further demands the need for low power and smaller files. The technology trends in magnetic recording in terms of areal density, volumetric efficiency, and material advances based on published data are reviewed. opticalstorage including read-only, write-once, and read/write drives becomes an emerging technology with a removability feature, which may complement magnetic recording DASDs. The recent advances in opticalstorage media and drives and their comparisons with magnetic recording technology are discussed.

Among the many advances in computer technology in recent years, one significant development has been the use of networks as a means of sharing resources among multiple computer systems. Despite the considerable successes achieved on this front, limitations have become apparent in the current generation of network-based resource sharing technology. The recent introduction of gigabit-per-second local area networking and high-performance storage device technologies now provide the basis for a new class of networked system. Our recent efforts have involved realizing a system which supports resource sharing among computer systems in a very high performance network- based environment. Developments range from integration of the HIPPI-based networked systems to new protocols for data transport to the incorporation of the UniTree system as the coordinating entity for system-wide storage and file management. This paper presents an overview of considerations for this style of network-based resource sharing.

The grand challenges of science and industry that are driving computing and communications have created corresponding challenges in information storage and retrieval. An industry-led collaborative project has been organized to investigate technology for storage systems that will be the future repositories of national information assets. Industry participants are IBM Federal Systems Company, Ampex Recording Systems Corporation, General Atomics DISCOS Division, IBM ADSTAR, Maximum Strategy Corporation, Network Systems Corporation, and Zitel Corporation. Industry members of the collaborative project are funding their own participation. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory through its National Energy Research Supercomputer Center (NERSC) will participate in the project as the operational site and provider of applications. The expected result is the creation of a National storage Laboratory to serve as a prototype and demonstration facility. It is expected that this prototype will represent a significant advance in the technology for distributed storage systems capable of handling gigabyte-class files at gigabit-per-second data rates. Specifically, the collaboration expects to make significant advances in hardware, software, and systems technology in four areas of need, (1) network-attached high performance storage;(2) multiple, dynamic, distributed storage hierarchies;(3) layered access to storage system services;and (4) storage system management.
The United States Department of Energy's Special Technologies Laboratory (STL) has been actively involved with ground penetrating radar technology since 1968. Throughout this time period, a variety of technical ap...

advances in optical networking technology provide the network with unique storage capabilities enabling the creation of a physical shared memory in a wide area distributed system. This has implications on the overall systems' architecture as well as on the host. From the user perspective the end-system will be shaped by the application and become a global distributed shared-memory multiprocessor. In this paper we propose a memory building block based on optical networking technology that we further use in devising a multiprocessor host architecture. A hierarchical memory architecture that ensures scalability and allows multiple copies of a shared object is adopted. The architecture favours hardware solutions for enforcing cache coherence by exploiting the intrinsic broadcast capability of the new memory module. The interprocess communication system suitable for such an environment is analysed in order to achieve functional transparency for applications ported from a multicomputer to a multiprocessor, and issues related to performance transparency when dealing with long light-propagation latency are addressed. With this processing-communication paradigm, the host-network interface simply provides a direct path between the host-memory and the external network-memory.< >

The advanced development and characteristics of a new high resolution, high frame rate, reflected mode MOSLM is reported. This effort is aimed at the production of Miniature Ruggedized optical Correlators. The device research and process development is being performed at Carnegie Mellon University NSF datastorage System Center (formerly Magnetic technology Center) under contract from Litton data Systems. Pixel size is under one mil center to center, one third the dimension of present transmission mode evaluation devices. This development includes optimization of the optical and functional characteristics of the MOSLM for Mil Spec Systems.

The current method of munitions systems testing uses film cameras to record airborne events such as store separation. After film exposure, much time is spent in developing the film and analyzing the images. If the analysis uses digital methods, additional time is required to digitize the images preparatory to the analysis phase. Because airborne equipment parameters such as exposure time cannot be adjusted in flight, images often suffer as a result of changing lighting conditions. Image degradation from other sources may occur in the film development process, and during digitizing. advances in the design of charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras and mass storage devices, coupled with sophisticated data compression and transmission systems, provide the means to overcome these shortcomings. A system can be developed where the image sensor provides an analog electronic signal and, consequently, images can be digitized and stored using digital mass storage devices or transmitted to a ground station for immediate viewing and analysis. All electronic imaging and processing offers the potential for improved data quality, rapid response time and closed loop operation. This paper examines high speed, high resolution imaging system design issues assuming an electronic image sensor will be used. Experimental data and analyses are presented on the resolution capability of current film and digital image processing technology. Electrical power dissipation in a high speed, high resolution CCD array is also analyzed.
