The problem of global synchronization in massively parallel systems is discussed for the level of models represented by asynchronous cellular automata arrays. Synchronization is called global if a given asynchronous automata array functions in logical time so that its behavior can be homomorphously mapped to the behavior of the prototype synchronous system in physical time. Our approach is decomposing the asynchronous array to synchro-stratum which acts as a distributed asynchronous clock and automata stratum whose automata have a construction similar to that of the synchronous prototype array automata. For various disciplines of prototype synchronization, the corresponding variants of synchro-stratum implementation for the asynchronous analogue are discussed.

We describe the design of a compilation system, which translates Fortran programs automatically into explicitly parallel programs for a massively parallel architecture. Such a compiler must automatically generate data distributions and derive program transformation strategies based on a combination of heuristics and analysis features. Programs are subjected to an iterative tuning process, involving three major components: a restructuring system, a performance analysts subsystem, and a parallelization support environment. Many of the components in this environment have already been implemented in the framework of the Vienna Fortran compilation system.< >

The parentheses-matching problem is of crucial importance in the construction of expression tree in order to evaluate, for instance, arithmetic expressions. A new parallel algorithm is introduced in this paper to solve the parentheses-matching problem optimally (in O(log/sub 2/ n) parallel time with O(n/log/sub 2/ n) processors) on an EREW-PRAM model. An algorithm for an input string of n parentheses with a maximal nested level of log n is also presented.

The paper proposes a new architecture, which has the potential to support low-level image processing as well as intermediate and high-level vision analysis efficiently. The integrated architecture consists of a mesh of processors enhanced with an efficient recursive network. Low-level image processing is performed on the mesh processor, while intermediate and high-level vision analysis is performed on the recursive network. The interaction between the two levels is supported by parallel data and control paths. To illustrate the power of such a two-level system, we present efficient parallel algorithms for a variety of problems from low-level image processing to high-level vision. Representative applications include image component labeling convexity problems, and histogram-type operations. Through time complexity analysis, we show that the integrated architecture meets the requirements of many image understanding tasks.< >

This paper describes a parallel polygon rendering method on the graphics computer VC-1. The architecture of the VC-1 is a loosely-coupled array of general-purpose processors, each of which is equipped with a local frame buffer. The contents of the local frame buffers are merged into one in real time considering the visibility control based on screen depth. In our polygon rendering method, polygons are distributed among the processors and each processor independently computes the image of the assigned polygons using the Z-buffer method. To achieve load balancing, a technique called adaptive parallel rasterization is developed. The adaptive parallel rasterization automatically selects the appropriate parallelizing approach according to the estimated size of polygons displayed on the screen. The measured rendering performance of VC-1 using this polygon rendering method is shown.< >

Currently, many parallel algorithms are defined for shared memory architectures. The preferred machine model is the PRAM, but this model does not take into account properties of existing architectures that have a distributed memory and an asynchronous execution model. A transformation of PRAM programs into distributed, asynchronous ones is known. In order to produce not only correct but also efficient code the tasks have to be clustered. We introduce a parallel algorithm producing an optimal clustering for coarse grained task graphs with respect to the execution time on an asynchronous distributed random access machine, the A-DRAM. This machine model assumes distributed memory, asynchronous execution of tasks, computation costs, and communication delay.< >

This paper presents an outline of our strategy for program synthesis within the VIM film technology where special-purpose animation films are used as a new type of abstraction. To specify an algorithm/method the user develops his/her own film. New films are created through cutting, editing and other click operations by combining and merging component films. These operations predefine transformation rules to be performed with templates related to the system films. These templates are hand-made programs or files of a few hierarchical levels taking into account various kinds of programming know-how and techniques for the efficient implementation of computation on a target computer system. The program synthesis is performed by sequential transformations of the above-mentioned programs and files.

An approach to declarative construction of parallel implementations (dynamical parallelizers) for a general class of sequential imperative programs by means of the algebraic programming system APS is considered. It gives advantages of rapid prototyping and evolutionary development of efficient parallelizers. An operational model of a dynamical parallelizer in the form of transition system is constructed and major parts of its declarative implementation are described as systems of relations. Techniques for designing efficient parallelizers are presented and exemplified.< >

The problem of global synchronization is solved for asynchronous processor arrays and multiprocessor systems with an arbitrary interconnection graph. Global synchronization of asynchronous systems is treated as a homomorphic mapping of an asynchronous system behavior in logical time onto the behavior of the corresponding synchronous system with a common clock functioning in physical time. The solution is based on decomposing the system to the processor stratum and synchro-stratum; the latter plays the role of a global asynchronous clock. For the case of a synchronous system with two-phase master-slave synchronization, a simple implementation of the synchro-stratum for the corresponding asynchronous system is proposed. It is shown that, depending on the local behavior of the processors, the synchro-stratum is able to perform two types of global synchronization: parallel synchronization and synchronization that uses a system of synchro-waves.< >
