The widespread use of location-enabled devices on public transportation vehicles produces a huge amount of geospatial data. The primary objective of this research study is to build a solution framework that can process a large amount of geospatial data obtained from GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers fixed on different buses on different routes, preprocess, clean, and transform that data for analysis. There are various challenges associated with the processing of GPS data, like discontinuities, non-uniformities, poor network coverage, and human errors. This study proposes two novel, simple algorithms to extract bus trip and bus stop sequences, from the crude raw data, incorporating those challenges. Moreover, the dwell times at the bus stops are estimated solely using this GPS data in three different possible scenarios in the data filtering process. When considering the previous related studies in this area, the proposed approaches are applied to GPS data obtained at a medium sample rate (for example, 15 seconds) for heterogeneous traffic conditions, and also with a unique dwell time estimation process. In addition, statistical methods are implemented to analyse a variety of novel public transit-system performance metrics, such as (i) excess journey time (EJT); (ii) excess dwelling time (EDT); (ii) excess running time (ERT); and (iv) segment idle time ratio (SITR), at different time horizons, where these metrics are developed in the absence of schedule data. These metrics facilitate the transport authorities in real-time bus monitoring, evaluating their performance, and identifying inappropriate driving behaviours. A detailed explanation is provided through a case study of two main routes in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka.

Waste management has become a pressing problem in a world that is becoming more and more urbanised. Traditional ways of dealing with trash are usually inefficient and bad, leading to pollution, health problems, and wasted resources. As an answer to these problems, the Internet of Things (IoT) has changed the way trash is handled in a big way. This abstract looks at how smart waste management based on the Internet of Things could totally change the business of garbage disposal. Through a network of sensors and devices, the Internet of Things (IoT) connects trash cans, garbage trucks, and waste processing facilities so that they can be monitored and improved in real time. A smart waste management system that is built on IoT has many benefits. With the real-time information it gives about how much trash is being made, routes for collecting trash can be made more efficient in terms of time and fuel use. This cuts down on the number of times trash needs to be picked up, reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released, and saves money. Sensors in trash cans can also find dangerous or flammable items, so they can be dealt with right away and any problems can be avoided. Also, the Internet of Things makes it possible for predictive analytics, which help waste management officials predict how much trash will be made and use their resources well. Using smart waste sorting methods like optical sensors and machine learning algorithms, recyclable and non- recyclable trash can be correctly found and sorted. This helps people recycle more and puts less pressure on landfills. Smart trash management systems that are based on the Internet of Things (IoT) get more people involved and help them understand. Mobile apps and smart devices can tell a person when their trash will be picked up, where the nearest recycling sites are, and how much trash they make. In recent years, location-based services have gradually penetrated all aspects of people's daily life, bringing great convenience to people's work and life. Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) is a positioning method that can derive a pedestrian's movement trajectory by relying on sensors information, with a high degree of autonomy and continuity. However, existing PDR tends to restrict the target posture to remain steadily pointing in the direction of pedestrian movement throughout the localization process. In addition, although it can achieve a high degree of positioning accuracy in a short period of time, it generates a cumulative error over time. To these problems, this paper proposes a fusion localization method that combines PDR based on multiple smartphones pose recognition and acoustic localization. In this method, we first employ a GWO-ELM based target posture recognition model. Then based on the posture recognition result for PDR localization, Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) technique is used for acoustic localization. Finally, particle filtering is utilized to combine the two methods. To demonstrate the validity of the method, we performed several experiments on a motion trajectory with a length of 97.2 meters. The results show that the method has better localization performance than the traditional method. In addition, it can realize high-precision localization under different devices with universality and stability. © 2025 SPIE.

Machine learning (ML) is finding efficient application in innumerous fields of our modern society. The range of applications spans from the creation of new perfumes to the development of automatic weapons and almost everything in between [1]. Given the huge success of ML in all those fields it was completely natural that the optical communications community tried to take advantage of such efficient data-driven approximators. In this talk we start by addressing the question of when ML can be useful in optical systems and networks namely: • for which type of problems should we rely on probabilistic ML algorithms rather than on traditional deterministic approaches? • when is ML cost-effective against existing / alternatives approaches? Afterwards, the major decisions that need to be taken during the training phase of a ML algorithm are briefly overview, and other practical aspects such as the importance of monitoring the ML algorithm during its life cycle or the challenges faced when the algorithm goes towards a production environment are also introduced [1]. As far as possible, the concepts will be illustrated using realistic use-cases [2-6]. Two different use-cases will be mainly used: (1) Quality of Transmission (QoT) estimation in open / disaggregated systems (ii) Raman amplifier inverse system design QoT estimation in open/disaggregated networks is a big challenge as a compromise between accuracy, computational-time, and shared information needs to be achieved. The usually proprietary heuristic models used (i.e. derived by the system vendor), can't be immediately applied to estimate the performance of lightpaths traversing equipment from different vendors. This is being addressed by industry consortiums promoting common models to be used in such scenarios, however at the cost of accuracy. In order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and mitigate the damage of noise to the communication quality,an effective interference suppression algorithm,which is based on the improved density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise algorithms,is proposed for visible light communication systems using the complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor image sensor as the *** results show that the algorithm can learn the region where the payload data is located,filter out the noise data,and greatly decrease the *** effect of the algorithm is also studied through bit error ratio performance.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is gaining popularity in detection and classification of cognitive and emotional states. In addition to hemodynamic responses arising from functional activity changes in the brain areas of interest, fNIRS signals contain components related to other physiological processes, such as respiration (frequency oscillations around 0.3 Hz) and cardiac pulsation (around 1 Hz). While heart rate and respiration measures have been successfully used as separate modalities to assess mental workload, these components are often discarded in fNIRS studies during the pre-processing. In this study, we examined whether including features related to heart and breathing rate improves the accuracy of mental workload level classification. Data collected with wearable fNIRS devices from 14 healthy participants performing mental workload task (n-back) were used to extract features for the classification. Machine learning classifiers were trained and tested using conventional features separately and in combination with the features derived from the oscillatory activity of respiration and heart pulsation. By comparing the performance, we demonstrated the effect of including proposed features on the classification accuracy of mental workload. In future studies, the examined features might be beneficial for other classification problems where modulations in heart and breathing rates are expected. © 2021 SPIE.

Besides traditional lens-based imaging techniques, coded aperture imaging (CAI) can also provide target images but without using any optical lenses, therefore it is another solution in imaging applications. Most CAI methods reconstruct target image only from a single-shot coded image using a fixed coding mask;however, the collected partial information inevitably deteriorates the reconstruction quality. Though multi-exposure CAI methods are designed, these existed algorithms can hardly improve reconstruction signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution simultaneously;additionally, dynamic coding mask display still requires expensive devices and complicated systems. In order to reconstruct target image with both enhanced spatial resolution and SNR but using cost-effective devices and a simple system, we design a noise reduced dynamic synthetic coded aperture imaging camera (NoRDS-CAIC) in this paper. The NoRDS-CAIC only consists of a programmable liquid crystal display (LCD) and an image recorder, and both of them are integrated with a three-dimensional printed shell with the compact size of 19 cm x 15 cm x 16 cm and controlled by our designed software to automatically realize coding mask display, coded image recording and target image reconstruction. When using the NoRDS-CAIC, the optimized coding mask is first sent to the programmable LCD and displayed, then the corresponding coded image is automatically captured using the image recorder. Next, cycle the above procedures to capture enough coded images with previously known coding masks and measured point spread functions (PSFs), and the target image can be finally reconstructed using our designed NoRDS-CAIC decoding algorithm, which is shown with better noise suppression capability and higher reconstruction resolution compared to other classical CAI algorithms. Multigroup Multicast Precoding for Energy Optimization in SWIPT systems With Heterogeneous Users

The key to developing future generations of wireless communication systems lies in the expansion of extant methodologies, which ensures the coexistence of a variety of devices within a system. In this paper, we assume several multicasting (MC) groups comprising three types of heterogeneous users including information Decoding (ID), Energy Harvesting (EH) and both ID and EH. We present a novel framework to investigate the multi-group (MG) - MC precoder designs for three different scenarios, namely, Separate Multicast and Energy Precoding Design (SMEP), Joint Multicast and Energy Precoding Design (JMEP), and Per-User information and/or Energy Precoding Design (PIEP). In the considered system, a multi-antenna source transmits the relevant information and/or energy to the groups of corresponding receivers using more than one MC streams. The data processing users employ the conventional ID receiver architectures, the EH users make use of a non-linear EH module for energy acquisition, while the users capable of performing both ID and EH utilize the separated architecture with disparate ID and non-linear EH units. Our contribution is threefold. Firstly, we propose an optimization framework to i) minimize the total transmit power and ii) to maximize the sum harvested energy, the two key performance metrics of MG-MC systems. The proposed framework allows the analysis of the system under arbitrary given quality of service and harvested energy requirements. Secondly, to deal with the non-convexity of the formulated problems, we transform the original problems respectively into equivalent forms, which can be effectively solved by semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and alternating optimization. The convergence of the proposed algorithms is analytically guaranteed. Thirdly, a comparative study between the proposed schemes is conducted via extensive numerical results, wherein the benefits of adopting SMEP over JMEP and PIEP models are discussed.

A Contemporary Survey on 6G Wireless Networks: Potentials, Recent Advances, Technical Challenges and Future Trends

Smart services based on Internet of everything (IoE) are prophesied to reap notable attention by both academia and industry in the future. Although fifth-generation (5G) is a promising communication technology, however it cannot fulfill complete demands of novel applications. Sixth-generation (6G) technology is envisaged to overcome limitations of 5G technology. The vision and planning of future 6G network has been started with this aim to meet the stringent requirements of mobile communication. Our aim is to explore recent advances and potential challenges to enable 6G technology in this review. We have devised a taxonomy based on computing technologies, networking technologies, communication technologies, use cases, machine learning algorithms and key enabler technologies. In this regard, we subsequently highlight potential features and key areas of 6G. Key technological breakthroughs which include quantum communication, tactile communication, holographic communication, terahertz communication, visible light communication (VLC) Internet of Bio Nano Things, which can put profound impact on wireless communication, have been elaborated at length in this review. In this review, our prime focus is to discuss potential enabling technologies which can develop seamless and sustainable network, encompassing symbiotic radio, blockchain, new communication paradigm, VLC and terahertz. These transformative possibilities can drive the surge to manage the rapidly growing number of services and devices. In addition, we have investigated open research challenges which can hamper the performance of 6G network. Finally, we have outlined several practical considerations, 6G key projects and future directions. We envision 6G undergoing unprecedented breakthroughs to eliminate technical uncertainties and provide enlightening research directions for subsequent future studies.
