This paper discusses research in spectrum analysis, beamforming, and direction finding, using signal subspace techniques. Such methods can provide improvements in performance by effectively incorporating prior information concerning the spatial and temporal structure of the signals and noise. During the past decade, many researchers have contributed to broadening the range of applicability of such methods and increasing our understanding of their relation to traditional linear statistical modelling. Representative results will be described, together with an outline of future research directions and a brief introduction to the literature on systolic architectures and algorithms for parallel implementation of the required matrix computations.

A class of processors which perform local neighborhood or cellular operations has well-documented applications in image processing. The architectural feature which unites these processors is their use of special-purpose hardware to compute image transformations based both on the values and on the spatial relationship of pixels in the input image. Typical operations include 3×3 convolution and mathematical morphology. processing elements which compute cellular operations have been incorporated in a variety of system architectures. These range from single-processor, recirculating buffer systems to systems which have thousands of processors in a four-way interconnected mesh. Another feature which unites these processors is that they operate on images in the iconic domain. A new class of non-iconic processor is introduced here which uses image encoding schemes to reduce the number of operations required for certain classes of operations by between one and two orders of magnitude. © 1985 SPIE. A method for the optimum processing of random light fields using probability density functions is derived. The situation when two unknown random fields exist, corresponding to different observation conditions for the same object of general form and for which the radio of undistorted images is known, is examined. It is shown that in this case optimum adaptive processing can be realized without resorting to recursion algorithms for refining the a priori information, with no restrictions imposed on the geometrical characteristics of the objects. Modeling of the optimum adaptation algorithm on a computer showed that high-quality images can be reconstructed using it.

Current research in digital optical computing systems is described. This includes both arrays of individual optical gates and their use in systems. In these systems, the primary information carrying medium is photons. One particular optical system, whose concept has been demonstrated experimentally, can implement general sequential logic circuits. The characteristics of interconnections and communications at the gate, chip, and processor level are discussed in relation to digital optical and electronic systems. optical systems have significant advantages in the achievable interconnection density and flexibility. This has consequences in the architectures and algorithms that can be implemented with each technology.

A design is presented for a Content Addressable Array Parallel Processor (CAAPP) which is both practical and feasible. Its practicality stems from an extensive program of research into real applications of content addressability and parallelism. The feasibility of the design stems from development under a set of conservative engineering constraints tied to limitations of VLSI technology. We then describe various procedures for image processing on the CAAPP. The first performs image convolutions very quickly. It is shown that this algorithm can be generalized to perform convolutions with increased mask size with only a moderate reduction in speed. The second uses the CAAPP to quickly and robustly decompose an optic flow field into its rotational and translational components to recover sensor motion parameters. We also briefly describe techniques for associating symbolic descriptions with extracted image structures in the CAAPP. © 1984 SPIE. All rights reserved.

This research extends previous work on the modelling and analysis of time-varying imagery using distributed parameter systems (DPS) theory. An integrated or 'weak' solution approach to the DPS model yields a computationally efficient algorithm for feature extraction and estimation of time-varying image motion which allows image function step discontinuities with respect to both spatial and temporal arguments. These algorithms represent a region-oriented as opposed to point-by-point approach to image motion analysis. Experimental results using real-world time-varying imagery confirm the validity of the approach. The particular effort reported concerns analysis of the spatio-temporal extracted from the weak solution approach. information related both quantitatively to motion estimation and qualitatively to motion and object(s) structure are shown to evolve from this approach. Thus, the blending of the 'motion is basic' and 'static is basic' approaches in dynamic imagery is enabled.

This paper describes an image processing system that is in operational use for the extraction of latent information from degraded photographs arising in routine police work. A wide range of spatial domain and Fourier domain techniques to both diagnose and correct for various picture problems are described. The enhancement methods discussed include contrast enhancement, noise filtering, digital color filtering, perspective correction, adaptive Fourier filtering to remove background patterns, and image deblurring. Color images are treated by operating on the separated red, green, and blue (R, G, B) components, and a novel encoding scheme is used to enable the display of color pictures on a standard 8-bit frame store. These techniques have been developed for, and applied to, operational rather than laboratory-generated images. A brief description is given of the hardware that is used, which incorpo-rates an array processor to enhance computational speed, a high quality micro-densitometer for digitizing images, and a digital frame store for final display. The system has been configured to give an operator as much interactive control as possible.

This paper reviews recent developments in signal processing and surveys recent progress in parallel processing algorithms and architectures for their real-time implementation. It has previously been shown1-2 that the major computational requirements for many important real-time signal processing tasks can be reduced to a common set of basic matrix operations including matrix-vector multiplication, matrix-matrix multiplication and addition, matrix inversion, solution of systems of linear equations, least squares approximate solution of linear systems, eigensystem solution, generalized eigensystems solution, and singular value decomposition (SVD) of matrices. To this list, we would now add the generalized singular value decompositions of Van Loan3,4 and Paige-Saunders5. The first five matrix operations listed above may be computed non-iteratively, and systolic array architectures and algorithms are available which provide modular parallelism, local interconnects, regular data flow, and high efficiency, with the efficiency essentially constant as the parallelism is increased6-8. Parallel computation of eigensysterns, generalized eigensysterns, the singular value decomposition, and the generalized singular value decomposition is more difficult, since the computation is necessarily iterative, and it is difficult to utilize only local communication between processing elements while maintaining high efficiency. algorithms for the latter problems are therefore still the subject of intensive research. © 1983 SPIE. Some problems of digital image processing are considered in the paper. Main attention is paid to effective statistical processing of observations obtained thereby. Statistical invariant coupling method which is the basis for constructing synthesis of effective decision algorithms is used for the purpose. Optimum sampling procedures are also discussed. The results are presented as components of the single algorithm for determining homogeneous regions boundaries in the composite picture which provides determination of the closed boundaries.
