Task offloading in MEC systems interconnected by metro optical networks: A computing load balancing solution

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is a promising technology to satisfy end users' ever-increasing demand for low latency. By building small-scale cloud infrastructures at the network edge, tasks from end users can be offloaded to geographically nearby edge servers to speed up processing. However, since the computing resources of each edge server are limited, "the nearest is the best" may not apply in some cases. The task may be blocked due to insufficient computing resources if the nearest edge server is heavy-loaded or overloaded, especially in peak times. Imbalanced computing load may affect user experience and degrade system performance. Hence, this paper integrates computing load balancing with task offloading and studies how to reasonably select the target edge server for each task and find the routing path to the target edge server by considering the load distribution of edge servers. The aim is to minimize the completion delay while balancing the global computing load. Two heuristic algorithms are designed for the computing load balancing task offloading (CLB-TO) scheme, termed the transmission delay-based CLB-TO (TD-based CLB-TO) and the genetic algorithm-based CLB-TO (GA-based CLBTO). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve higher acceptance ratio and shorter completion delay than the other four alternative algorithms.

This paper delves into the extraction and secure verification technology of cable equipment information based on image processing algorithms, demonstrating how the combination of high-resolution cameras and circular LED lights effectively improves image quality to adapt to complex industrial environments. The research applies Reed-Solomon error correction algorithms and other advanced decoding techniques to ensure accurate data recovery even in the case of damaged QR codes. The article also introduces the application of digital signatures and timestamps in enhancing data anti-counterfeiting and authenticity verification, greatly enhancing the security and accuracy of the system through rigorous data formatting and verification processes. In 1985 I joined Texas Instruments' (TI's) Deformable Mirror Device ( DMD) group to develop applications of the cantilever device in coherent optical signal processing. At that time I witnessed the "aha discovery" that led to the invention of the DLP. It is interesting to consider the many years of effort that led Larry Hornbeck to this commercially successful implementation, not just the technology, but the efforts to sustain the project through sponsored R&D. While TI viewed the only sustainable market as (incoherent) display applications, the DMD group sustained the effort with DoD funding for coherent and incoherent optical signal processing systems, including matched filter correlators, digital optical switches, optical crossbar switches and related neural network processors. For coherent signal processing the need for a 2p phase-only (piston-motion pixel) spatial light modulator (SLM) was readily apparent to the sponsors. While TI saw little commercial justification for the phase-only device, this need inspired me around 1991 to develop a new class of real-time computer-generated holography algorithms referred to a pseudorandom encoding, in which each phase-only pixel is encoded with a desired magnitude and phase. The optical Fourier transforms of the modulation enabled my developments of multi-spot object targeting and laser tweezer systems. Around 2005 I began using Digital Light processing (DLP) developer kits in place of scanners to time-share images with a small number of detectors. One system using a single, high sensitivity detector together with well- chosen DLP frames quickly forms a "partial image" of a point-like scene objects - arguably, an early version of compressive sensing. This paper concludes with recommendations on optimizing the performance and applications of, and potential markets for TI's recently demonstrated phase-only DLP.

Comparing Sensor Fusion and Multimodal Chemometric Models for Monitoring U(vi) in Complex Environments Representative of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel

optical sensors and chemometric models were leveraged for the quantification of uranium(vi) (0-100 mu g mL(-1)), europium (0-150 mu g mL(-1)), samarium (0-250 mu g mL(-1)), praseodymium (0-350 mu g mL(-1)), neodymium (0-1000 mu g mL(-1)), and HNO3 (2-4 M) with varying corrosion product (iron, nickel, and chromium) levels using laser fluorescence, Raman scattering, and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared absorption spectra. In this paper, an efficient approach to developing and evaluating tens of thousands of partial least-squares regression (PLSR) models, built from fused optical spectra or multimodal acquisitions, is discussed. Each PLSR model was optimized with unique preprocessing combinations, and features were selected using genetic algorithm filters. The 7-factor D-optimal design training set contained just 55 samples to minimize the number of samples. The performance of PLSR models was evaluated by using an automated latent variable selection script. PLS1 regression models tailored to each species outperformed a global PLS2 model. PLS1 models built using fused spectra data and a multimodal (i.e., analyzed separately) approach yielded similar information, resulting in percent root-mean-square error of prediction values of 0.9-5.7% for the seven factors. The optical techniques and data processing strategies established in this study allow for the direct analysis of numerous species without measuring luminescence lifetimes or relying on a standard addition approach, making it optimal for near-real-time, in situ measurements. Nuclear reactor modeling helped bound training set conditions and identified elemental ratios of lanthanide fission products to characterize the burnup of irradiated nuclear fuel. Leveraging fluorescence, spectrophotometry, experimental design, and chemometrics can enable the remote quantification and characterization of complex systems with numerous species, monitor system performance, help identify the source of materials, and enable rapid h

The rapid advancements in digital assessment systems have highlighted the need for efficient, automated methods of evaluating written examination scripts. The paper presents a new framework that leverages optical Character Recognition (OCR), deep learning, as well as Natural Language processing (NLP) to automate the correction and evaluation of handwritten answer scripts. The suggested system begins by utilizing OCR to digitize handwritten responses, converting them into machine readable text. Subsequently, advanced learning frameworks, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), are employed to classify and recognize written characters with high accuracy, even in varying handwriting styles. Once digitized, the responses undergo semantic analysis and content evaluation using advanced NLP algorithms. These algorithms, integrated with transformer models like BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), evaluate the coherence, relevance, and correctness of answers by comparing them to model answers and predefined keywords. The system incorporates both syntactic and semantic matching techniques to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the answer content, while also analyzing grammar and language use. The proposed system can significantly streamline the educational assessment process, paving the way for intelligent and automated grading systems in academic and professional environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Real-Time Efficient FPGA Implementation of the Multi-Scale Lucas-Kanade and Horn-Schunck optical Flow algorithms for a 4K video Stream

The information about optical flow, i.e., the movement of pixels between two consecutive images from a video sequence, is used in many vision systems, both classical and those based on deep neural networks. In some robotic applications, e.g., in autonomous vehicles, it is necessary to calculate the flow in real time. This represents a challenging task, especially for high-resolution video streams. In this work, two gradient-based algorithms-Lucas-Kanade and Horn-Schunck-were implemented on a ZCU 104 platform with Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC FPGA. A vector data format was used to enable flow calculation for a 4K (Ultra HD, 3840 x 2160 pixels) video stream at 60 fps. In order to detect larger pixel displacements, a multi-scale approach was used in both algorithms. Depending on the scale, the calculations were performed for different data formats, allowing for more efficient processing by reducing resource utilisation. The presented solution allows real-time optical flow determination in multiple scales for a 4K resolution with estimated energy consumption below 6 W. The algorithms realised in this work can be a component of a larger vision system in advanced surveillance systems or autonomous vehicles.

With the rapid development of the internet and information technology, the traditional encryption methods suffer from drawbacks such as poor processing capacity and low security, making them vulnerable to attacks. This paper presents a hybrid encryption algorithm that combines the Lorenz chaotic system and the generalized Arnold transform to enhance information security and confidentiality in digital images. The proposed quantum encryption scheme involves two stages: interfering with pixel coordinate information and grayscale values using the generalized Arnold transform, followed by spatial domain scrambling of pixel positions using the Lorenz chaotic system. MATLAB simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm in achieving the desired confusion and diffusion of pixel values, making it a superior encryption method for cryptography. © 2025 SPIE.

All-quantum signal processing techniques are at the core of the successful advancement of most information-based quantum technologies. This article develops coherent and comprehensive methodologies and mathematical models to describe Fourier optical signal processing in full quantum terms for any input quantum state of light. We begin this article by introducing a spatially 2-D quantum state of a photon, associated with its wavefront and expressible as a 2-D creation operator. Then, by breaking down the Fourier optical processing apparatus into its key components, we strive to acquire the quantum unitary transformation or the input/output quantum relation of the 2-D creation operators. Subsequently, we take advantage of the above results to develop and obtain the quantum analogous of a few essential Fourier optical apparatuses, such as quantum convolution via a 4f-processing system and a quantum 4f-processing system with periodic pupils. Moreover, due to the importance and widespread use of optical pulse shaping in various optical communications and optical sciences fields, we also present an analogous system in full quantum terms, namely quantum pulse shaping with an 8f-processing system. Finally, we apply our results to two extreme examples of the quantum state of light. One is based on a coherent (Glauber) state and the other on a single-photon number (Fock) state for each of the above optical systems. We believe the schemes and mathematical models developed in this article can impact many areas of quantum optical signal processing, quantum holography, quantum communications, quantum radars and multiple-input/multiple-output antennas, and many more applications in quantum imaging, quantum computations, and quantum machine learning algorithms.

Accurately identifying field weeds is crucial for selecting appropriate agricultural machinery and herbicides. This paper focuses on nine common weed species during the seedling stage in natural backgrounds of field vegetables, proposing a novel weed foreground segmentation method based on image processing and a new weed classification model using sparse representation classification (K_SRC). Initially, K-means clustering and threshold segmentation are applied to the a component of Lab color space to obtain binary weed images, followed by area filtering to remove interference. The binary weed image is then masked with the original image to extract clean weed images. Color features and mLBP texture features are extracted from segmented weed images to form a training sample set. KNN computes a local dictionary, and sparse coefficients are calculated using the OMP algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate a classification accuracy of 95.22% compared to four other algorithms. Additionally, this research provides new insights into the application of sparse representation in agriculture. © 2024 SPIE.

ADMM-Based MIMO Equalization Algorithm for SDM Transmission With High MDL Tolerance

In this paper, we propose a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalization algorithm for optical space division multiplexing (SDM) systems impaired by mode-dependent loss (MDL). The proposed algorithm is a least mean square (LMS)-like algorithm derived on the basis of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework and consists of an iterative filtering process and filter tap update process. The filtering process is implemented in the frequency domain using the overlap-save technique and the filter update process is a gradient descent-based algorithm which tries to minimize the mean squared error of the equalizer output. The computational complexity of the proposed algorithm increases in proportion to the number of iterations and is the same as that of conventional LMS-based MIMO equalization when the number of iterations is one. We evaluate, through simulations, the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed algorithm for a coupled multi-core fiber channel model with significant MDL. The simulation results show that increasing the number of iterations improves the BER performance significantly compared to the conventional LMS-based equalization algorithm. The proposed algorithm offers a good tradeoff between BER performance and computational complexity and enhances the MDL tolerance for SDM systems.
