Light serves as an efficient information carrier for communication across air, land, and underwater environments due to its diverse propagation behaviors. Here, we establish a complete-mapping mobile all-light communication network that merges wired modes with wireless moving and fixed nodes, utilizing light sources of different wavelengths. To address alignment challenges in mobile bidirectional light transmission, a visual tracking module and a full-duplex light communication module are packaged together and fixed on a three-axis gimbal stabilizer. The transmission control protocol/inter net protocol (TCP/IP) scheme facilitates two-way real-time data transmission, while the complete-mapping network architecture enables seamless and balanced data flow among all nodes, ensuring real-time, bidirectional data exchange and failover capabilities. This decentralized network achieves up to 8 Mbps throughput with a delay of 7.93 ms. The fully symmetric, equipotential, and decentralized design holds the potential for developing advanced all-light information processing and computing systems for seamless connectivity across diverse environments. The European FLEX-SCALE project advances disruptive research on complementary optical x-haul network technologies in support of emerging requirements for 6G cellular systems. Employing a top-down strategy, it addresses the diverse requisites across all network levels. The architecture introduces optical nodes (ONs) for efficiently aggregating traffic, strategically placed to meet ultra-low latency demands at the network edge and varied capacities in the core. Utilizing optical ultra-wideband (UWB) and space division multiplexing (SDM) multiplexed transmission links, each ON routes traffic at multiple granularities (MG), from full fiber to flexibly defined bands, down to individual wavelength channels, as needed by the traffic flows. This enables the replacement of electronic routers by all-optical switches, significantly reducing energy consumption. The support of UWB/SDM boosts the network node aggregate capacity to 10 Pb/s, meeting the envisioned year-2030 capacity targets for 6G. With enabling technologies and components like the optical digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the plasmonic transceivers, or multi-granular optical nodes, FLEXSCALE seeks to make a reality key 6G network attributes like ultra-high capacity, flexibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, low latency, and reliability. A sophisticated control and orchestration system ensures optimal operation, energy efficiency, and service provisioning, utilizing advanced traffic engineering, cloud-native architecture, and machine learning. In summary, FLEX-SCALE represents a visionary and comprehensive approach, ushering in a transformative era for 6G connectivity.

Security-aware resource allocation in fog computing using a meta-heuristic algorithm

In recent years, the number of smart devices and wireless data transmissions has increased worldwide. These emerging applications and services require not only extensive computing capabilities and high battery power, but also elevated data transmissions as well. Nonetheless, the computing capacity of this equipment is constrained, resulting in significant consequences on the performance and operating costs of services in 5th-generation wireless networks. Recent advantages of Fog computing have increased the use of this model to fulfill above requirements in the IoT context. A new Fog computing network model has been proposed in order to address these issues by providing cloud computing services at the network's edge. In Fog computing, mobile devices are not required to offload all their tasks to remote and central servers. However, since other users are exposed to offloaded tasks, they are vulnerable to malicious attacks and eavesdropping. In this paper, we investigate security-aware resource allocation in device-to-device based fog computing systems. In order to enhance task offloading, a novel multi-objective function is proposed to optimize delay and energy savings compared to local computing, as well as security breach costs. Several multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms, such as Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm ii (NSGA-ii), have been proposed over the past decade. Optimizing objectives, such as energy consumption and delay was the goal of using these algorithms. Subsequently, the improved NSGA-ii algorithm is employed to solve the problem. In this algorithm, the Sigma Scaling, a technique used to adjust fitness values to maintain diversity in the population, is utilized to control selection pressure. By incorporating Sigma Scaling, the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm are effectively managed, enhancing its ability to escape local optima and prevent premature convergence. Next-Generation Access network Based on Coherent Optics with Hybrid Transceivers, Multi Formats, and Flexible Rates

Coherent detection has emerged as a key technology for advancing passive optical networks (PON) beyond 100 Gbps per wavelength, due to its advantages over the intensity and direct-detection (IM/DD) approach, which was previously dominant in PON systems. In coherent PON architectures, the cost of the optical network unit (ONU) is substantial due to the complexity of its transceivers. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on simplifying the transmitters and receivers on the ONU side. Yet, simplifying the ONU transceiver introduces issues like reduced dynamic range and lower data rates. How to make a balance between the performance and the cost, particularly in terms of component complexity, represents a critical challenge for the advancement of coherent PON. Therefore, we propose and demonstrate a hybrid, multi-format, and flexible-rate bidirectional coherent PON system, supporting a compatible OLT and ONUs with different types of transceivers. ONUs are categorized into different tiers based on their performance and cost requirements, with transceivers of varying complexity allocated accordingly. As a demonstration of concept, we have successfully conducted experimental transmissions of 25-GBaud 4/16/64- quadrature-amplitude-modulation signals across 20-km fiber in a bidirectional setup, achieving data rates ranging from 50-Gbps to 300-Gbps. The low-end, middle-end, and high-end ONUs attain power budgets of 39/31/21 dB, 43/36/26 dB, and 40/33/23 dB, respectively. This architecture serves as an effective bridge from the current 50G IM/DD PON to the anticipated 200G coherent PON, meeting the varied requirements of users at different service levels. © 2024 IEEE.

Dysarthric speech recognition: an investigation on using depthwise separable convolutions and residual connections

Dysarthria is a neurological condition resulting from impairments affecting muscle control involved in speech articulation, leading to reduced intelligibility or unintelligible speech, which affects communication abilities. Although Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies hold the potential to improve the lives of people with dysarthria significantly, ASR systems designed for normal speech have shown limited effectiveness when presented with impaired speech. Consequently, researchers have focused on developing ASR systems specifically tailored for dysarthria. However, progress in this area has been gradual due to the scarcity of dysarthric speech for training and the increased variability of speech among dysarthric individuals, necessitating a larger dataset of dysarthric utterances. One potential solution to enhance the robustness of dysarthric ASR is to deepen the architecture of the acoustic model, which maps the speech signal to words or phonetic units. However, deeper architectures require more training data and pose challenges in dealing with issues such as the vanishing gradient problem and representational bottlenecks in deep learning models. In this study, we expanded on our previous findings and investigated the applications of Depthwise Separable Convolution neurons and the inclusion of Residual Connections to propose a deep dysarthric acoustic model, tackling both vanishing gradients and representational bottleneck issues in dysarthric ASR. Multiple speaker-adaptive dysarthric ASRs were trained and evaluated for 15 UA-Speech dysarthric subjects, then benchmarked against the state-of-the-art and our previous dysarthric ASRs. Our proposed architectures have delivered up to 22.58% word recognition rate (WRR) improvements over the reference models. We observed an average of 10.81% better WRRs over the base traditional dysarthric ASR for all speakers. Satellite constellations have the potential for enabling globe-spanning quantum networks for secure communication, entanglement distribution, and eventually the quantum internet. The architecture, design, and operation of such space quantum networks face several challenges, from scheduling, performance analysis and optimization, and overcoming issues such as weather effects. Here, we summarise recent research into constellation design, optimization, and the incorporation of quantum memories and repeaters in space quantum communication links. These preliminary works offer guidance for future development efforts for long-term space quantum communication systems. © 2025 SPIE.

The microgrid is a conceptual solution proposed as a plug-and-play interface for various types of renewable generation resources and loads. The high-level technical challenges associated with microgrids include (1) operation modes and transitions that comply with IEEE1547 and (2) control architecture and communication. In Part I, the emphasis is on the design of an electrical control architecture for an offshore oil drilling platform powered by wind generation. Engineering a distributed control system having safety critical features, requiring real-time performance is challenging. In this follow-up article we introduce the communication framework for the microgrid scenario under investigation. In all communication networks, scholastic delays and performance are inherent. The only feasible approach is to put bounds on the random processes, qualitatively define the worst cases, and build the distributed control system to be resilient enough to tolerate those behaviors. This is the approach taken by this paper. We propose a communication architecture, discuss performances requirements of the sub-systems, and layout network solutions meeting those specifications.
