The worldwide demand for broadband communications is being met in many places through the use of installed single-mode fiber networks. However, there is still a significant "first-mile" problem, which seriously limits the availability of broadband Internet access. Free-space optical wireless communication has emerged as a technique of choice for bridging gaps in the existing high data rate communication networks, and as a backbone for rapidly deployable mobile wireless communication infrastructure. Because free space laser communication links can be easily and rapidly redirected, optical wireless networks can be autonomously reconfigured in a multiple-connected topology to provide improved network performance. In this paper we describe research designed to improve the performance of such networks. Using topology control algorithms, we have demonstrated that multiply-connected, rapidly reconfigurable optical wireless networks can provide robust performance, and a high quality of service at high data rates (up to and beyond 1 Gb/s). These systems are also very cost-effective. We have designed and tested on the University of Maryland campus a prototype four-node optical wireless network, where each node could be connected to the others via steerable optical wireless links. The design and performance of this network and the topology control is discussed.

Following a disaster-strike, rapid and reliable communication between relief/rescue workers in the affected regions, and the control stations located at a distance, is essential. This is to facilitate seamless information exchange about the status of victims, requirement of relief personnel/commodities, supply chain of goods and services, and so on, thus rendering relief operations more timely and effective. However, the availability of Internet in a post-disaster scenario is ruled out more often than not;wireless communication and mobile phones may not be usable either except in only selected areas. Besides, geographical obstructions such as broken bridges or closed roads add to the worries of personnel trying to develop a temporary network infrastructure for effective communication. Furthermore, availability of resources - both technological and financial - may prove to be a bottleneck in case of disasters in under-developed regions. Under such circumstances, a post-disaster communication network need to be developed to meet the following: (i) close to 100% information packet delivery, (ii) minimum latency for information exchange, and (iii) compliance to the resource constraints. In this paper, we propose a latency-aware four-tier planned hybrid architecture to tackle the aforementioned challenges and focus on extensive modeling and analysis of the planned network architecture. For detailed evaluation with the help of case study scenarios, we make use of the ONE Simulator, customized to suit our requirements. Additionally, we measure the improvement in network resources utilization and performance achieved with modeling of the architecture over that without modeling. Modeling energy consumption in next-generation wireless access-over-WDM networks with hybrid power sources

Energy consumption is now one of the most important issues for network carriers, since the majority of the energy needed for their operation is consumed in the wireless access and optical transport networks. The continuous growth in the wireless customers and traffic volumes and the consequent energy demand on modern carriers' broadband infrastructures require reconsidering their energy efficiency, by starting from the formulation of new, more complete and representative network models that should become the foundations for modern energy-aware control plane architectures. Accordingly, this work presents a novel comprehensive energy model for next-generation wireless access-over-optical-transport networks characterized by hybrid power systems (i.e., multiple dynamically available power sources). The objective is to identify the energy-related information that need to be handled at the control plane layer to support energy-aware networking practices. Such information can be made available to suitable energy-aware routing and wavelength assignment algorithms that may exploit them to optimize the overall network energy-consumption and reducing the associated carbon footprint. The proposed model may be taken as a reference for the implementation of new energy-aware control plane protocols (routing and signaling) that make use of power-related considerations to achieve energy-efficiency and energy-awareness in wavelength-routed network infrastructures. The lack of transparency for Internet communication prevents effective mitigation of today's security threats: i) Source addresses cannot be trusted and enable untraceable reflection attacks. ii) Malicious communication is opaque to all network entities, except for the receiver;and although ISPs are control points that can stop such attacks, effective detection and mitigation requires information that is available only at the end hosts. We propose TRIS, an architecture that bootstraps transparency for Internet communication. TRIS enables the definition of misbehavior according to the unique requirements of hosts, and then it constructs verifiable evidence of misbehavior. First, hosts express desired traffic properties for incoming traffic;a deviation from these properties signifies misbehavior. Second, ISPs construct verifiable evidence of misbehavior for the traffic they forward. If misbehavior is detected, it can then be proven to the ISPs of the communicating hosts. We implement our architecture on commodity hardware and demonstrate that verifiable proof of misbehavior introduces little overhead with respect to bandwidth and packet processing in the network: our prototype achieves line-rate performance for common packet sizes, saturating a 10 Gbps link with a single CPU core. In addition, we tackle incremental deployment issues and describe interoperability with today's Internet architecture.

Emerging use cases with demanding bandwidth and latency requirements, as well as the challenge of reducing power consumption, are driving the need for evolution in optical network architectures. An all-photonics metro-access converged network (APN) aims to actualize a flat architecture by expanding dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) metro networks into access areas. The APN flexibly and dynamically provides optical connectivity between any two points, even across the boundaries between access and metro areas according to individual application requirements and traffic-load status. To actualize and further evolve the APN concept, several technical challenges regarding access nodes, defined as Photonic Gateways (GWs), still remain. From an access node functionality perspective, first, the Photonic GW should forward various types of optical paths. Unlike reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers in current metro networks, which are specifically designed to cross-connect DWDM signals, the Photonic GW needs to handle various lights and optical signals, including short-reach applications and emerging non-communication use cases. Second, the Photonic GW should provide remote control channels to user terminals (UTs) in a more scalable and cost-effective manner within the node-footprint and power-consumption constraints. Remote and in-channel UT control is required to place flexibly the endpoints of a wavelength path, i.e., UT, beyond the control-plane network. Then, from the controller perspective, the physical connectivity between the newly connected UT and the access-side port of the Photonic GW should be autonomously identified for plug-and-play operation. Since UTs are widely distributed within an access area, there is a need for an initial connection method that does not require timing adjustments to connect to the APN between newly connected UTs. The Special Issue of Journal of Telecommunication systems contains papers addressing recent challenges of communication networks planning. The paper entitled 'A non-cooperative game-theoretic framework for resource allocation in network virtualization' by Mohamed Said Seddiki and colleagues focus on network virtualization, and in particular on providing customized and on demand resources for multiple service providers with differentQuality of Service requirements. The next paper, 'The IPv6 QoS system implementation in virtual infrastructure' by Halina Tarasiuk and colleagues present the proposal of the IPv6 QoS System implementation in the virtualized environment. Jordi Mongay Batalla and colleagues in 'Optimized decision algorithm for Information Centric networks' include the proposition of an Information Centric network (ICN) architecture enhanced with network, server context and user context-awareness for the delivery of the multimedia content. Ahmed Haddad and Maurice Gagnaire in 'Optimized radio-over-fiber-based cellular backhauling strategy using genetic algorithms and Pareto fronts' address the issues of cellular backhauling all-optical network architecture called GeRoFAN(Generic Radio-over-Fiber Accessnetwork) aiming to federate 4G system radio cells.

On the performance of a scalable optical switching architecture for flat intercluster data center network with centralized control

Data centers have to sustain the rapid growth of data traffic due to the increasing demand of band-width-hungry Internet services. The current fat tree topology causes communication bottlenecks in the server interaction process, resulting in power-hungry O-E-O conversions that limit the minimum latency and the power efficiency of these systems. As a result, recent efforts have advocated that all optical data center networks (DCNs) have the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on demand. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cascaded microelectromechanical systems switches-based DCN architecture which dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. We analyze it under a data center traffic model to determine its suitability for this type of environment. The proposed architecture can be scaled to 3300 input/output ports by available experimental components with low blocking probability and latency. The blocking probability and latency are about 0.03 and 72 ms at a moderate traffic load for 32 input/output ports based on our numerical results, which are much smaller than the results for 4 input/output ports which are 0.13 and 235 ms, respectively. Advanced reconfiguration framework based on game theoretical techniques in autonomic communication systems

The Autonomic communications concept forms one promising solution to accommodate the increased complexity of legacy and emerging systems, fostering the automation and minimizing the need for human intervention. This notion implies the introduction of advanced mechanisms for autonomic decision making and self-configuration. The focus of this work is on the introduction of an advanced reconfiguration framework for the support of the following functionalities: i) efficient strategies of terminal attachment to heterogeneous wireless systems are proposed dependent on the evaluation of input stimuli from the surrounding telecom environment. ii) it is shown how to enable optimized selection and attribution of resources, iii) the application of new device configuration is examined, proposing a framework for dynamic protocol stack adaptation. It is indeed necessary to introduce a framework that will enable, policy based reconfiguration decisions supporting dynamic and optimal discovery, download and replacement of necessary protocol functionality. In this context, legacy management and control mechanisms should be enriched with such features operating in either terminal or network equipment. Namely, this contribution discusses cognitive reconfiguration management issues by introducing two basic reconfiguration units encapsulated in a unified management and control architecture: i) the component based protocol stack reconfiguration framework and ii) the resource usage optimization unit. Simulation and performance results presented in the paper prove the technical feasibility of the proposed mechanisms as well as the optimization of reconfiguration actions.

A Multiplex Approach Against Disturbance Propagation in Nonlinear networks With Delays

We consider both leaderless and leader-follower, possibly nonlinear, networks affected by time-varying communication delays. For such systems, we give a set of sufficient conditions that guarantee the convergence of the network towards some desired behaviour while simultaneously ensuring the rejection of polynomial disturbances and the non-amplification of other classes of disturbances across the network. To fulfill these desired properties, and prove our main results, we propose the use of a control protocol that implements a multiplex architecture. The use of our results for control protocol design is then illustrated in the context of formation control. The protocols are validated both in-silico and via an experimental set-up with real robots. all experiments confirm the effectiveness of our approach.
