Chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and nonlinear effects are important issues on the physical layer of high-speed reconfigurable WDM optical fiber communication systems. For beyond 10 Gbit/s optical fiber transmission system, it is essential that chromatic dispersion and PMD be well managed by dispersion monitoring and compensation. One the other hand, dispersive and nonlinear effects in optical fiber systems can also be beneficial and has applications on pulse management, all-optical signal processing and network function, which will be essential for high bite-rate optical networks and replacing the expensive optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion. In this Ph.D. dissertation, we present a detailed research on dispersive and nonlinear effects in high-speed optical communication systems. We have demonstrated: (i) A novel technique for optically compensating the PMD-induced RF power fading that occurs in single-sideband (SSB) subcarrier-multiplexed systems. By aligning the polarization states of the optical carrier and the SSB, RF power fading due to all orders of PMD can be completely compensated. (ii) Chromatic-dispersion-insensitive PMD monitoring by using a narrowband FBG notch filter to recover the RF clock power for 10Gb/s NRZ data, and apply it as a control signal for PMD compensation. (iii) Chirp-free high-speed optical pulse generation with a repetition rate of 160 GHz (which is four times of the frequency of the electrical clock) using a phase modulator and polarization maintaining (PM) fiber. (iv) Polarization-insensitive all-optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) with a fiber Bragg grating and a Faraday rotator mirror. (v) Width-tunable optical RZ pulse train generation based on four-wave mixing in highly-nonlinear fiber. Purpose – This article seeks to introduce the concept of the Grid-GMPLS control plane architecture with focus on new services, models, and interoperability issues of Grid-GMPLS (G²MPLS) and GMPLS control planes. The purpose of this activity is to design, implement and test extensions of the GMPLS control Plane that can enable the paradigm of a G²MPLS network. Design/methodology/approach – The approach deploys extended GMPLS implementations aiming to facilitate bandwidth provisioning to Grid users. Findings – G²MPLS is a network control Plane architecture that implements the concept of Grid network Services. GNS is a service that allows the provisioning of network and Grid resources in a single-step through a set of integrated procedures. By providing a unified network/Grid infrastructure the control plane can adapt to the demands of applications having intensive requirements on both computational and network resources. Research limitations/implications – The project delivers the prototype implementation of G²MPLS. Consideration should be given to involving the vendors of the optical equipment in the development process to incorporate the project findings into their operating systems. Practical implications – The G²MPLS protocol stack has been designed to be compatible with the ASON/GMPLS architecture. This could lead to possible integration of Grids in the existing operational networks, by overcoming the current limitations of Grids running over dedicated networks with their own administrative procedures. Originality/value – The paper provides the description of Grid network Infrastructures with a common and transversal control Plane approach based on G²MPLS, in which Grid resources and optical network resources are both controlled by the same control Plane, seamlessly spanning the different control and Management domains of the network. © 2008, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

This paper focuses on design aspect of communication network for feeder automation applications. First, the business functional requirements of feeder automation and the supporting communication technologies are reviewed. Then, based on typical loop sectionalizing feeder connecting scheme, the communication infrastructure using Ethernet Passive optical networks (EPONs) is presented, and the redundant PON architecture is adopted.

Service providers today are facing the challenge of operating and maintaining multiple networks, based on multiple technologies. network Management System (NMS) solutions are being used to manage these networks. However the NMS is tightly coupled with Element or the Core network components. Hence there are multiple NMS solutions for heterogeneous networks. Current network management solutions are targeted at a variety of independent networks. The wide spread popularity of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a clear indication that all of these independent networks will be integrated into a single IP-based infrastructure referred to as Next Generation networks (NGN) in the near future. The services, network architectures and traffic pattern in NGN will dramatically differ from the current networks. The heterogeneity and complexity in NGN including concepts like Fixed Mobile Convergence will bring a number of challenges to network management. The high degree of complexity accompanying the network element technology necessitates network management systems (NMS) which can utilize this technology to provide more service interfaces while hiding the inherent complexity. As operators begin to add new networks and expand existing networks to support new technologies and products, the necessity of scalable, flexible and functionally rich NMS systems arises. Another important factor influencing NMS architecture is mergers and acquisitions among the key vendors. Ease of integration is a key impediment in the traditional hierarchical NMS architecture. These requirements trigger the need for an architectural framework that will address the NGNM (Next Generation network Management) issues seamlessly. This paper presents a unique perspective of bringing service orientated architecture (SOA) to legacy network management systems (NMS). Future networks require a high degree of flexibility over wide areas to enable many services that require higher quality wireless networks such as remote control of cars and remote surgery. Therefore, the network technology must combine high capacity, low latency, and flexibility. To deal with these requirements, we developed Software-Defined Radio over Fiber (SD-RoF), which is an architecture that tightly couples light and radio at a low cost. SD-RoF offers the following two key features: elastic wireless service and elastic bidirectional passthrough. The elastic wireless service provides users with access to wireless services that they need at any time in any place. The elastic bidirectional passthrough connects two remotely located points via RoF through radio waves and enables allowing for bidirectional radio communication between devices at each location. In this study, we design and prototype implementation of SD-RoF, and conduct a basic evaluation of the implemented circuit and demonstration experiments on elastic bidirectional passthrough. Through demonstration experiments, we found the feasibility and the challenges of SD-RoF. In addition, the deployment of SD-RoF, application scenarios, and operational issues are discussed.

The next generation of optical communication networks should provide a significant role for large range high-splitting ratio high-speed passive optical networks (SuperPONs). optical amplification of both upstream and do downstream traffic is necessary. to sustain these configurations with several amplifiers in series throughout the network. The Photonic Local Access network (PLANET), an EU-ACTS project, was developed to operate at 2-5 Gbit/s in the downstream direction (from the head-end to the user optical network unit or ONU) and at 311 Mbit/s in the upstream. A laboratory-based system demonstrated the feasibility of the SuperPON concept over a span of 100 km to support a potential 2,048 optical network units. The downstream utilised erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) whereas in the upstream the use of burst-mode semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) minimised noise funneling effects. Simulation results are presented in this paper for the upstream SOA cascade. Data are provided for the evolution of both the signal power and the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) power throughout the amplifier cascade. The amplifier models were implemented in a block-oriented simulation environment (SPW) in order to allow an agile response to the evaluation of competing system architectures and to provide ease of editing and re-use. They incorporated all component and fibre losses, spectral variation of losses, spectral variation of the ASE and the SOA gain, gain saturation of the SOAs (via a linear approximation) and a linear approximation to characterise the variation of the noise figure with input power Dispersion at 1300 nm, the possibility of another ONU ranging during the upstream transmission together with non-linear effects in fibre and optical amplifier were ignored. A Generalized Dimming control Scheme for Visible Light communications

A novel dimming control scheme, termed as generalized dimming control (GDC), is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The basic idea of GDC is to exploit adaptively time, spatial and signal domain resources for enhancing communication performance under practical illumination constraints. In particular, to satisfy the illumination constraints, an incremental algorithm for index mapping is first proposed to achieve target optical power and uniform illumination. Next, GDC having the optimal activation pattern is investigated to improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance of VLC. In particular, the BER performance of GDC is analyzed using the union bound technique. Based on the analytical BER bound, the optimal activation pattern of GDC scheme having the minimum BER criterion (GDC-MBER) is obtained by exhaustively searching all conditional pairwise error probabilities. However, since GDC-MBER requires high search complexity, two low-complexity GDC schemes having the maximum free distance criterion (GDC-MFD) are proposed. The first low-complexity GDC-MFD scheme, termed as GDC-MFD1, is derived by a lower bound of the free distance using the Rayleigh-Ritz theorem. The second low-complexity GDC-MFD scheme, termed as GDC-MFD2, is proposed to reduce further the computation by exploiting the time-invariance characteristics of the VLC channel. Simulation and numerical results show that GDC-MBER, GDC-MFD1 and GDC-MFD2 have similar BER performance, and they can achieve more than 3 dB SNR gains compared with conventional dimming control schemes for a BER of 10(-4) and a dimming level of 50%.

Recent advances in multimedia network systems and mechatronics have led to the development of a new generation of applications that associate the use of various multimedia objects with the behavior of multiple robotic actors. The connection of audio and video devices through high speed multimedia networks is expected to make the system more convenient to use. For example, many home appliances, such as a video camera, a display monitor, a video recorder, an audio system and so on, are being equipped with a communication interface in the near future. Recently some platforms (i.e. UPnP(1), HAVi(2) and so on) are proposed for constructing home networks;however, there are some issues to be solved to realize various services by connecting different equipment via the pervasive peer-to-peer network. UPnP offers network connectivity of PCs of intelligent home appliances, practically, which means to require a PC in the network to control other devices. Meanwhile, HAVi has been developed for intelligent AV equipments with sophisticated functions using high CPU power and large memory. Considering the targets of home alliances are embedded systems, this situation raises issues of software and hardware complexity, cost, power consumption and so on. In this study, we have proposed and developed the service oriented network architecture for control and management of home appliances, named SONICA (Service Oriented network Interoperability for Component Adaptation), to address these issues described before.

HLAN is a promising architecture to realize Tb/s access networks based on ultra-fast optical TDM technologies. This paper presents new research results on efficient algorithms for the support of quality of service (QoS) over the HLAN network architecture. In particular, we propose a new scheduling algorithm that emulates fair queueing in a distributed manner for bandwidth allocation purpose. The proposed scheduler collects information on the queue of each host on the network and then instructs each host how much data to send. Our new scheduling algorithm ensures full bandwidth utilization, while guaranteeing fairness among all hosts.
