An introduction to artificialneural network models is presented, along with an overview of their practical application and potential applications in signal processing. Successful neural network implementations are described and their performances are compared to those of more traditional signal processing implementations. The Hopfield net, self-organizing feature maps, and the multilayer perceptron are reviewed. Implementation of neural nets in speech synthesis, speech recognition, target identification, imageprocessing, pattern matching, error-correction coding, and neurocomputing are reported. Several ICs in production are briefly mentioned.< >

The spectral structure, the synchronization of cells and the number of degrees of freedom are intimately related in the real brain. The reproduction of such relations is expected from models. By constructing model neuralnetworks with various patterns of connectivity, we show under what conditions the network may exhibit dynamics seen in the brain cortex. We discuss the role of chaotic dynamics in relation to the information processing of the network. Until recently, the majority of research conducted in the field of neuralnetworks was oriented towards the recognition and imageprocessing ability of artificialnetworks based on time-independent attractors. However in practical applications, the spatial as well as the spatio-temporal selforganizing properties of the networks may be implemented in order to solve specific problems. An example of such a network is given.

Guiding a robot arm to successfully track a weld seam during the welding process requires accurate high-speed image analysis filtering of the camera display. Several algorithms incorporating neural nets are being investigated for performing this analysis in real time applications. These algorithms use the visual image directly from the camera as the input to the neural net, then perform a generalized image analysis according to pre-determined training sets for approximating the weld seam angle in the camera coordinate system. One algorithm, written in FORTH, uses a two-layer perception model for the imageprocessing and an artificial intelligence technique for adjusting the connection weights. Another neural net, written in LISP, incorporates a multi-layer back propagation training algorithm with variable momentum and gain terms. Several characteristics of these nets have been tested including the learning speed, quantification of the robustness (the systems ability to operate in a noisy environment), and ability to correctly identify the weld seam angle. The data indicate that certain optimization can be accomplished with respect to maximizing robustness while minimizing the learning time/cycles.

It is noticeable that in very recent years, a paradigm shift is taking place in artificial Intelligence, particularly in areas related to artificial vision. This interest, although finding its roots in computing archives under the heading of "neuralnetworks" is undergoing a revival due to the possibility of making such machines run in real-time through special purpose architectures. In the U.S.A. this work takes the guise of "Boltzmann Machines" or Connectionist Systems which, as yet, are being studied in theory and by simulation. This paper describes work done in the UK which, so far has reached an implementation both as a prototype and as a fully engineered product. The neural-net-based architecture of the WISARD system will be discussed in the context of adaptive window applications.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 12th Italian Workshop on neural Nets WIRN VIETRI-Ol, jointly organized by the International Institute for Advanced Scientific Studies "Eduardo R. Caianiello" (IIASS), the Societa Italiana Reti Neuroniche (SIREN), the IEEE NNC Italian RIG and the Italian SIG of the INNS. Following the tradition of previous years, we invited three foreign scientists to the workshop, Dr. G. Indiveri and Professors A. Roy and R. Sun, who respectively presented the lectures "Computation in Neuromorphic Analog VLSI Systems", "On Connectionism and Rule Extraction", "Beyond Simple Rule Extraction: Acquiring Planning Knowledge from neuralnetworks" (the last two papers being part of the special session mentioned below). In addition, a review talk was presented, dealing with a very up-to-date topic: "NeuroJuzzy Approximator based on Mamdani's Model". A large part of the book contains original contributions approved by referees as oral or poster presentations, which have been assembled for reading convenience into three sections: Architectures and Algorithms, image and Signal processing, and applications. The last part of the books contains the papers of the special Session "From Synapses to Rules". Our thanks go to Prof. B. Apolloni, who organized this section. Furthermore, two sections are dedicated to the memory of two great scientists who were friends in life, Professors Mark Aizerman and Eduardo R. Caianiello. The editors would like to thank the invited speakers, the review lecturers and all the contributors whose highly qualified papers helped with the success of the workshop.

This book gathers the proceedings of the 21st Engineering applications of neuralnetworks Conference, which is supported by the International neuralnetworks Society (INNS). artificial Intelligence (AI) has been following a unique course, characterized by alternating growth spurts and “AI winters.” Today, AI is an essential component of the fourth industrial revolution and enjoying its heyday. Further, in specific areas, AI is catching up with or even outperforming human beings. This book offers a comprehensive guide to AI in a variety of areas, concentrating on new or hybrid AI algorithmic approaches with robust applications in diverse sectors.;One of the advantages of this book is that it includes robust algorithmic approaches and applications in a broad spectrum of scientific fields, namely the use of convolutional neuralnetworks (CNNs), deep learning and LSTM in robotics/machine vision/engineering/imageprocessing/medical systems/the environment; machine learning and meta learning applied to neurobiological modeling/optimization; state-of-the-art hybrid systems; and the algorithmic foundations of artificialneuralnetworks.
