This paper proposes a new algorithm for computing the l/sub 1/ norm of a linear MIMO system described by a polynomial matrix fraction. The algorithm follows the one proposed by Balakrishnan and Boyd (1992) with the only difference that there is no need to obtain a state space realization first. Instead, the coefficients of the polynomial matrices are used directly. The algorithm is based on two computational steps: an FFT-based long division of polynomial matrices and the polynomial computation of Hankel singular values presented by Kwakernaak (1992).

The plethora of new technologies and services such as MPLS, ATM, IP, SONET and WDM allows services to be restored at different layers and at different costs. Restoration schemes at multiple layers might collide, causing a race condition, where restoration agents at different layers keep trying to establish a connection. We define a model for restoration mechanisms at different layers and discuss a technique for automatically detecting conflicts. Our algorithm might be applied as a test before a failure occurs.

To achieve QoS guarantees for predicted traffic with N quality levels in differentiated services (Diff-Serv) networks with M interior routers, an efficient heuristic algorithm for end-to-end congestion control is being developed. It can be applied as an effective tool for traffic engineering (TE) in MPLS-based networks or it can be used for network dimensioning in optimal sizing of transmission trunks, minimizing the total expansion cost. The heuristic algorithm is compared with an algorithm based on an exact approach. In all numerical test-examples the best possible result is achieved. It is obvious that heuristic option is very effective and for all cases it is possible to find the best result but with significant savings. It means that such a heuristic approach can be successfully applied for MPLS-based traffic engineering in Diff-Serv networks.

We present a novel hardware architecture supporting diamond search and fast full search for block matching motion estimation. It can handle irregular data flow of these fast algorithms without pipeline bubbles, and reduce computation of duplicated search positions. The proposed architecture needs preprocessing with a small amount of computational power while performing fast full search and is suitable for the platform-based video coding system. While the diamond search mode can be applied for real-time requirements, we can choose the fast full search mode, which adapts the processing cycles to picture contents and preserves the same quality of full search block matching (FSBM), for applications of high picture quality or compression ratio. It needs only 9K gates and one additional memory of search range size and is more cost-effective than the conventional systolic array architecture.

An automated synthesis for analog computational circuits in transistor-level configuration is presented. A cell-based structure is introduced to express moderate constraints on the MOSFET circuit topology. Even though each cell has a simple structure that consists of one current path with four transistors, well-known building blocks can be expressed using combinations of the cells. A genetic algorithm is applied to search circuit topologies and transistor sizes that satisfy given specifications. Synthesis capabilities are demonstrated through examples of three types of computational circuits, such as absolute, squaring, and cubing functions.

It is well known that traditional analytic methods of queueing systems, are based on the distributions of interarrival time and service time. However, it is quite inconvenient to, employ these methods directly to the analysis of current self-similar traffic models. In this paper, we first derive a novel analytic model based on the arrival rate and the service rate for single-class steady-state queueing systems. Then the derivations are extended to provide upper and, lower boundary conditions for multipriority queues in networks deploying differentiated services (DS). In addition, the analytical model is also applied to the analysis of DS effects on self-similar traffic. The results illustrate the performance gain in queue length of the priority classes that DS can provide compared to a network that does not deploy DS. Additionally, the upper lower boundary conditions of the queue lengths for each priority class also, serves as a system design guideline.

We introduce a new kernel language for modeling hardware/software systems, adopting multiple heterogenous models of computation. The language has formal operational semantics, and is well suited for model checking, code synthesis etc. For different blocks of code, different scheduling policies can be applied, to reflect the different interpretations of, for example, parallelism in different models of computation. The user can add his own scheduling policies, to use or explore different models of computation.

Hyperspectral, remotely sensed data generate very large covariance matrices and this has a significant impact on the computational load and processing time. As the dimensionality of the data increases, so to does the number of training samples required to estimate the covariance matrices of the data. Two approaches for significantly reducing the number of parameters needed to represent a covariance matrix are presented and these are applied to data acquired by the HyMap sensor. The inverse covariance matrix for hyperspectral data is typically sparse and can be approximated as band-diagonal. A good approximation of the covariance matrix has been achieved using only a fraction of the number of parameters.

In this study, a nonstationary filtering technique was developed to compensate for spatially variant detector response in varying focal-length fan-beam (VFF) collimated SPECT. First a collimator coordinate system was introduced in order to derive the geometric transfer function and the frequency-distance relation for the VFF collimator from its parallel-beam and fan-beam counterparts, and then the Fourier transform of the detector response was computed and used to construct a Wiener filter. The filter was applied to the blurred projection data before image reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrated improved resolution in reconstructed images after nonstationary filtering.

We present a high performance stereo image coding scheme using wavelet transform. As for most stereo image coding techniques, we use block-based disparity estimation and compensation to decorrelate the dependence between the left and the right images. The wavelet transform and corresponding coding scheme are then applied to the stereo images. By using context-based arithmetic coding and rate-distortion optimization techniques, our coder outperforms others published in the literature by more than 3 dB.
