This paper provides a tutorial introduction to phasor measurement units (PMU) when applied in a power system environment, provides an overview of communication alternatives for wide area measurement systems (WAMS), and computes the delay budget for each type of communication link. The goal of this study is to provide data regarding the communication delay that can be incorporated into the analysis and simulation of WAMS.

Distributed autonomous robotic units are dynamically assigned to manufacturing targets in a model of a complex manufacturing environment such that an objective function like the total profit is optimized. The introduced control of the robotic units is based an a self-organization approach motivated by the selection of modes in pattern formation of physical, chemical or biological systems. This approach is even resistant against sudden changes like breakdowns of some robotic units. In the present work, it is shown how environmental feedbacks like time delays from manoeuvring around obstacles can be considered such that, opposite to many other approaches, feasibility of the solutions can be guaranteed.

In this paper, the sparse matrix canonical grid (SMCG) method is applied to study electromagnetic scattering from a dense medium. This dense medium may either be randomly distributed two-dimensional infinite dielectric cylinders or three-dimensional dielectric particles. For arbitrarily shaped 2D or 3D dielectric scatterers, it is more convenient to adopt a volumetric integral equation formulation with the scatterers divided into squares or cubes of a uniform size so that free-space Green's functions can be used. Instead of using the addition theorem for the indirect far-interaction calculations, we employ the Taylor series expansion, the same procedure as adopted in the SMCG method applied to rough surface scattering.

In the framework of computer-aided diagnosis, this paper proposes a novel functionality for computerized tomography (CT)based investigation of pulmonary airways. It provides a specific visualization modality - the virtual CT bronchography - together with quantitative investigation via a central axis-based description. This functionality relies on an energy-based 3D reconstruction of the bronchial tree up to the 6th order divisions. The originality of the 3D reconstruction approach consists in combining axial and radial propagation potentials in a growth-driven process, which is applied to a subset of low-order airways extracted from the CT volume by means of a robust mathematical morphology operator. The tree central axis, which provides the navigation and quantification functionalities, is computed via a recursive procedure applied to each bronchial segment, based on geodesic front propagation. Validated by expert radiologists, examples of virtual CT bronchographies are presented for both normal and pathological airways and the interest of quantitative CT bronchography in clinical diagnosis and follow-up is discussed.

In this paper, the radiation mechanism of an implanted planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) is studied to improve radiation performances of PIFA in a human body by changing the width of the planar radiators. The PIFA is designed to operate at the medical implant communications service (MICS) frequency band (402-405 MHz). The numerical computational procedures (Annex E of Std. C95.3-2002) recommended by IEEE are applied to calculate spatial-average specific absorption rate (SAR) for the implanted antennas located in a biological tissue model. An experimental setup is used to measure the impedance matching characteristics of the implanted antenna

This paper provides two contributions to the study of programming languages and middleware for real-time and embedded applications. First, we present the empirical results from applying the RTJPerf benchmarking suite to evaluate the efficiency and predictability of several implementations of the real-time specification for Java (RTSJ). Second, we describe some of the techniques used to develop jRate, which is an open-source ahead-of-time-compiled implementation of RTSJ we are developing. Our results indicate that RTSJ implementations are maturing to the point where they can be applied to a variety of real-time embedded applications.

This paper contains the results of computer simulations performed for several realistic scenarios of electromagnetic (EM) field evaluation near the cellular base station (CBS) and some analysis of obtained results. The motivation of this study is exposure assessment of EM energy on biological objects. There are scenarios of field distribution indoors, near the hill, obstacle like a wall and finally the field distribution inside the human body is computed. These scenarios are general and frequently encountering in practice inside space covered by wireless networks. Using the reasonable computational resources and keeping the accuracy of the solution acceptable for problems involving the electrically large objects the method of auxiliary sources (MAS) (R. Zaridze et al., 2002) (D. Kakulia et al., 2004) is used to simulate the EM field for the cases mentioned above

In this work, we provide a technique for efficiently exploring a parameterized system-on-a-chip (SoC) architecture to find all Pareto-optimal configurations in a multi-objective design space. Globally, our approach uses a parameter dependency model of our target parameterized SoC architecture to extensively prune non-optimal subspaces. Locally, our approach applies genetic algorithms (GAs) to discover Pareto-optimal configurations within the remaining design points. The computed Pareto-optimal configurations will represent the range of performance (e.g., timing and power) tradeoffs that are obtainable by adjusting parameter values for a fixed application that is mapped on the parameterized SoC architecture. We have successfully applied our technique to explore Pareto-optimal configurations for a number of applications mapped on a parameterized SoC architecture.

One of the potentially greatest threats to human beings is climate change. Climate scenario modelling indicates that our environmental conditions will change with increasing speed in the coming years with one of the most significant changes being a warming of the global climate. Europe is maybe the most sensitive region of the world and it is not known whether we will experience regional cooling or warming in a future warmer world in general. The EuroClim system, currently being developed a European consortium, will be an advanced tool for climate monitoring and scenario modeling for the support of a sustainable development and protection of the environment in Europe. The European cryosphere will be the main indicator system. Snow and ice variables are extracted from satellite data and processed by advanced algorithms. The cryospheric information is applied in a regional climate model producing enhanced climate scenarios. Statistical tools extract the information needed by the users, like extreme weather, changes in the length of the growing season, etc.

Determining the relationship between structure (i.e. morphology) and function is a fundamental problem in brain research. In this paper we present a new framework based on Bayesian clustering methods for the voxel-wise statistical morphology-function analysis of registered MR images. We construct a Bayesian network to automatically identify the significant associations between voxel-wise morphological variables and functional variables, such as cognitive performance. A Bayesian latent variable induction method is applied to locate the homogeneous association regions on registered maps of morphological variables. Experimental results on images with simulated atrophy confirm that the new method outperforms conventional statistical method, based on linear statistics.
