In mobile radio communication systems, the power control algorithm adjusts the power of mobile users in order to make the signal to interference ratio (SIR) higher than a predefined threshold. Distributed algorithms are devised to solve the power control problem, using locally available quantities such as measured SIR. This paper studies the effect and impact of power quantization on the stability of these algorithms. In the IS-95 1-bit power control algorithm, the power trajectory goes up and down and will never stabilize on a power level. The usual notion of convergence in continuous power control algorithm may not apply in the discrete case. We address, the problem of whether the power of each mobile user fluctuates around the desired value. A new criterion is defined to measure the stability. This criterion is applied to three discrete power control algorithms and their stabilities are compared.

NIMI (National Internet Measurement Infrastructure) is a software system for building network measurement infrastructures. Its design emphasizes: (i) large-scale infrastructures composed from diversely-administered hosts, rather than infrastructures controlled by a single entity, and (ii) facilitating diverse types of measurements by diverse parties, some of whom are allowed richer access to certain portions of the infrastructure than others. We discuss our experiences with developing and operating the infrastructure to date: problems we have encountered, both foreseen and unanticipated, mistakes we made, and how we have adapted the design to address these. We also explore two key issues for developing a large-scale, extensible infrastructure: the problem of securely updating software on the measurement platforms, and the problem of constraining the resources consumed by different measurements. We argue that both of these can be unified in terms of controlling the behavior of the measurement software. But we also argue that, due to the varying burdens and benefits of the different mechanisms for providing this control, NIMI will need to provide "gradations" of security for different sites to choose from as best fits their requirements and resources.

We examine a number of roles that a proxy server can play in location based services and how it can be used to provide protection of personal identifiable information. Location data, service requests, and privacy policies are encoded in XML by the mobile terminal and forwarded to a proxy server placed between the mobile terminal and the location based service(s). By a suitable architecture in the mobile terminal and in the proxy, we can hide the mobile device's network location, hide the identity of its user, and, in some cases, provide misleading physical location(s). We have applied our privacy model to location information obtained from a GPS receiver. The GPS-based method was chosen as being the only available method where the positioning calculation function (PCF) is fully under the user's control, since the position is calculated within the mobile terminal; other technologies rely on the network infrastructure, and hence some or all of the position data is outside the user's control. A proof of concept was implemented using Fastrax's iTrax02 small, ultra-low power consumption GPS receiver. We illustrate a number of different functions which can be provided by examining some scenarios.

Recently substantial research has been devoted to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). One of a UAV's most demanding subsystem is vision. The vision subsystem must dynamically combine different algorithms as the UAVs goal and surrounding change. To fully utilize the available hardware, a run time system must be able to vary the quality and the size of regions the algorithms are applied to, as the number of image processing tasks changes. To allow this the run time system and the underlying computational model must be integrated. In this paper we present a computational model suitable for integration with a run time system. The computational model is called Image Processing Data Flow Graph (IP-DFG). IP-DFG has been developed for modeling of complex image processing algorithms. IP-DFG is based on data flow graphs, but has been extended with hierarchy and new rules for token consumption, which makes the computational model more flexible and more suitable for human interaction. In this paper we also show that IP-DFGs are suitable for modelling expressions, including data dependent decisions and iterations, which are common in complex image processing algorithms.

One of the key concerns in coral reef monitoring by remote sensing is to determine the effects of various optically-active constituents (i.e. suspended sediments, chlorophyll-a and yellow substances) present in the coastal waters to the observed reflectance produced by remote sensors. Quantification of these constituents is important since they serve as primary indicators of coral health and their probable waterborne environmental stressors. This paper describes the coupling of coral canopy bidirectional reflectance models previously developed by the authors with a two-flow radiative transfer solution specific to coastal waters to study the sensitivity of spectral reflectance of coral reef areas with combinations solid suspended matter and chlorophyll-a concentrations at various viewing and illumination conditions. Spectral field measurements including surface and subsurface reflectance profiles of coral-bottomed waters were obtained. Chlorophyll-a concentration and turbidity data were gathered from the field by deployment of field instruments. Results indicate comparable reflectance profiles produced by the computational model relative to field data, especially at shallower depths with weaker influence of chlorophyll-a concentration, more so at high concentration of suspended sediments. Inversion methods applied to coral reef reflectance modeling is likewise discussed, particularly its performance in the estimation of coral morphological parameters given variations in suspended sediment concentration and chlorophyll-a values.

The waterline extraction is one of the most effective satellite remote sensing tools for studying tidal flat environments and its changes, but has not been investigated in detail. A series of field surveys have been carried out to obtain grain size, moisture contents, field spectrometer measurement, and waterline tracking simultaneously with satellite observation. A neural networks algorithm was developed for extracting waterline in tidal flat from satellite-based remote. sensing data and applied to the Gomso tidal flat, Korea. Characteristics of tidal flats and spectral reflectance associated with waterline were analyzed first. We have chosen three bands as input data of neural networks: NIR reflects the amount of suspended sediment content at lower tidal flats; SWIR is sensitive to moisture content and is seriously affected by remaining surface water in sedimentary structures; and TIR appears to be the best among the three bands but its low spatial resolution reduces its utility. The neural network method developed here is independent of tidal situations and robust. The neural networks not only distinguish between tidal flats and seawater out of the images, but it also provides continuous outputs that represent mixed compositions of both features. The values of 0.3 - 0.4 were turned out to be waterline in neural networks output The neural networks output provided the closest to the ground truth and that of the ETM TIR band.

Microprocessors are designed to provide good average performance over a variety of workloads. This can lead to inefficiencies both in power and performance for individual programs and during individual phases within the same program. Microarchitectures with multiconfiguration units (e.g. caches, predictors, instruction windows) are able to adapt dynamically to program behavior and enable/disable resources as needed. A key element of existing configuration algorithms is adjusting to program phase changes. This is typically done by "tuning" when a phase change is detected - i.e. sequencing through a series of trial configurations and selecting the best. Algorithms that dynamically collect and analyze program working set information are studied. To make this practical, we propose working. set signatures - highly compressed working set representations (e.g. 32-128 bytes total). Algorithms use working set signatures to 1) detect working set changes and trigger re-tuning; 2) identify recurring working sets and re-install saved optimal reconfigurations, thus avoiding the time-consuming tuning process; 3) estimate working set sizes to configure caches directly to the proper size, also avoiding the tuning process. Multi-configuration instruction caches are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms. When applied to reconfigurable instruction caches, an algorithm that identifies recurring phases achieves power savings and performance similar to the best algorithm reported to date, but with orders-of-magnitude savings in the number of re-tunings.

This paper has proposed the distributed power control (PC) algorithms that employ two evolutionary computation (EC) techniques in order to solve linear systems of equations for power update in CDMA cellular radio systems. The proposed algorithms are developed by applying evolutionary computation algorithms with the phenotypic and genotypic views to the CDMA power control problem. The major gain from the applied evolutionary computation algorithms is more rapid optimization on linear systems of equations compared with the simple genetic algorithm (GA). Employing the distributed constrained power control (DCPC) as a basic reference algorithm, we have designed and implemented computational experiments on the DS-CDMA system. The results indicate that the proposed algorithms significantly enhance the optimization and calculation speed of power control. The proposed algorithms are also compared with the bang-bang type algorithm used in the IS-95 and the W-CDMA systems. The results show that the proposed the EC-DCPC phenotypic and GAPC genotypic algorithms also have a high potential advantage for increasing the CDMA cellular radio network capacity and decreasing the mobile terminal power consumption.

The verification of the timing requirements of large VLSI circuits is generally performed by using simulation or timing analysis on each combinational block of the circuit. Electric-level simulation is more accurate but may not be applied to large combinational blocks due to the long execution time to simulate all possible input situations. A possible solution would be simulating only the input patterns responsible for the critical operation. However there is no method that guarantees finding such input patterns. The other solution, timing analysis, does not present the same accuracy as simulation, mainly when the analyzer does not take false paths into account. On the other hand, false path-aware timing analyzers either are too time consuming or are not able to furnish information on the long false paths. In this paper we propose a timing verification tool, based on floating vector simulation and path tracing, able to identify the "true" critical delay of combinational blocks. It is also able to identify the long false paths that a combinational block may contain. Although being limited by the number of inputs of the combinational block to be analyzed, it also furnishes some valuable information on the circuit under analysis that may help the designer to take some important decisions and also to understand the impact of the chosen technology mapping parameters on the timing behavior of the circuit.

We present a method of runtime configuration scheduling in reconfigurable SoC design. As a model of computation in system representation, we use a popular formal model of computation, hierarchical FSM (HFSM) with synchronous dataflow (SDF) model, in short HFSM-SDF model. In reconfigurable SoC design with the HFSM-SDF model, the problem of configuration scheduling is challenging due to the dynamic behavior of the system such as concurrent execution of state transitions (by AND relation), complex flow (in the HFSM), and complex schedules of SDF actor firing. Thus, compile-time static configuration scheduling may not efficiently hide configuration *** resolve the problem, it is necessary to know the exact order of required configurations during runtime and to perform runtime configuration scheduling. To obtain the exact order of configuration, we exploit the inherent property of HFSM-SDF that the execution order of SDF actors can be determined before the execution of state transition of top FSM. After obtaining the order information in a queue called ready configuration queue, we execute the state transition. During the execution, whenever there is new available FPGA resource, a new configuration is selected from the queue and fetched by the runtime configuration scheduler. We applied the method to an MPEG4 decoder design and obtained up to 21.8% improvement in system runtime with a negligible overhead of runtime (1.4%) and memory usage (0.94%).
