A class of iterative aggregation/disaggregation methods (IAD) for computation of some important characteristics of Markov chains such as stationary probability vectors and mean first passage times matrices is presented and convergence properties of the corresponding algorithms are analyzed. Particular attention is focused on the fast convergence. Some classes of problems are identified for which the IAD methods return exact solutions after one single iteration sweap. (C) 2002 IMACS. A novel method focused on the symbolic computation of Noise Figure (NF) for MOS Transistor (MOST) circuits, is presented. In order to improve the computation time, a pure-nodal-analysis (PNA) method is applied by modeling all the circuit elements using the nullor. To demonstrate the suitability of the proposed method, two illustrative examples are given, where the NF computed using the proposed method, is compared with the simulation results using HSPICE.

While distributed, heterogeneous collections of computers ("Grids") can in principle be used as a computing platform, in practice the problems of first discovering and then organizing resources to meet application requirements are difficult. We present a general-purpose resource selection framework that addresses these problems by defining a resource selection service for locating Grid resources that match application requirements. At the heart of this framework is a simple, but powerful, declarative language based on a technique called set matching, which extends the Condor matchmaking framework to support both single-resource and: multiple-resource selection. This framework also:provide an open interface for loading application-specific mapping modules to personalize the resource selector. We present results obtained when this framework is applied in the context of a computational astrophysics application, Cactus. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique.

As technologies are rapidly evolving in the area of storage, recognition and displays, the vision of multi-modal interaction is positioning the human needs central to pervasive access to services. Users expect better looking interfaces that are also easy to use to improve high efficiency and productivity and to focus on task itself instead of tools as providing the invisibility in pervasive computing. However, it is hard to obtain the right service at the right time naturally.. in the multimedia environment based on current interaction approaches. In this paper, we propose a framework for multi-modal interaction which offers the sketch and speech interactive models without limitation of the diversity and richness of the provided services in the pervasive computing environment. Furthermore, it is applied to describe sample application and shows how it is used to create a new interface with high performance.

This paper explores the implications of integrating flexible module generation into a compiler for FPGAs. The objective is to improve the programmability of FPGAs, or in other words, the productivity of the FPGA programmer. We describe (1) the module generation library PAM-Blox II, the second generation of object-oriented module generators in C++, targeted at computing with FPGAs, and (2) examples of design tradeoffs and performance results using redundant representations for addition and multiplication, and technology mapping of comparison and elementary function evaluation. PAM-Blox II is built on top of a set of extensions to the gate level FPGA design library PamDC to provide a more efficient, portable, scalable, and maintainable module generator library. Using PAM-Blox 11 we demonstrate a simplified interface to bit-level programability. The simplification results from the bottom-up approach and a close coupling of architecture generation, module generation and gate level CAD. The tradeoffs for the module generators are based on trading area for speed and hand-optimizing technology mapping to the specific FPGA technology. As an example, we show that redundant number representations hold one key to unleashing the full potential of reconfigurability on the bit-level. The presented module generators are applied to encryption and compression to show the impact of the bit-level optimizations on application performance.

We study the new approach to rules induction from medical datasets with the help of physicians' assessment of the progressing solution in order to find new patterns in the available data. The method for automatic extraction of rules is presented that is based on the evolutionary induction of decision trees and automatic programming. The method is applied to a cardiovascular database, several sets of rules are induced upon different groups of attributes which should possibly reveal the presence of some specific cardiovascular problems in young patients. The obtained rules are assessed by a physician to evaluate the strength of the developed knowledge discovery method.
