The Education Committee of the Technical Council on computing and Information Technology (TCCIT) of ASCE conducted two surveys during 2002 to assess the current computing component of the curriculum in civil engineering. The two surveys were targeted at two different segments within the civil engineering profession: educators and practitioners. This paper presents the findings of the survey directed to civil engineering educators concerning their perspective on the issue. This survey is a follow-up of surveys conducted by the Education Committee in 1990 and 1995. The presentation of the results includes an analysis of some of the changes in the survey results since 1990.

A heterogeneous domain decomposition with non-matching grids is developed, extending the Aitken-Schwarz method [M. Garbey, D. Tromeur-Dervout, On some Aitken like acceleration of the Schwarz method, Internat. J. Numer. Methods Fluids 40 (2002) 1493-1513] which has proved to be efficient on metacomputing architectures. This novel numerical technique for the approximate solution of boundary value problems applies when the solution is assumed to possess many features in several subdomains such as in underground environmental problems with different geological layers. The numerical technique involves methods for the approximation and the solution of arising linear systems, as well as for parallel computing issues. We consider a natural coupling between the mixed finite element and spectral element approximations as well as the efficient solution of the coupled discrete systems on remote parallel computers with different architectures connected via a low speed network. An understanding of Computer Systems Architecture (CSA) is essential to an understanding of Computer Science. There is however a tendency, at all levels, in teaching Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to neglect CSA, but teaching ICT without teaching CSA is like teaching Russian without teaching the Cyrillic alphabet - students may be come reasonably fluent in the application of abstract high level skills (e.g. they know that the Russian for restaurant is restoran), but lack the basic skills needed to maintain and extend those skills (e.g. they cannot identify PECTOPAH as being the "real" Russian for restaurant). There are two major reasons for the neglect of CSA in teaching ICT. There is a misconception of the effect of technological change, and there is a tendency to use inappropriate didactic tools.

The design procedure of low-sensitivity, low-pass (LP) 2nd-and 3rd-order class-4 Sallen and Key active resistance-capacitance (RC) allpole filters, using impedance tapering, has already been published [1]. In this paper desensitization using impedance tapering is applied to HP and BP 2nd-order filters. It is shown that HP filters have dual properties of LP filters in the sense of sensitivity. Among various topologies of BP filters, the best topology is proposed. The sensitivity of a filter transfer function to component tolerances is examined using the Schoeffler sensitivity measure as a basis for comparison. Monte Carlo runs are performed as a double-check. The component values, selected for impedance tapering, account for the considerable decrease in sensitivities to component tolerances for the LP as well as for the HP and BP filters.
