Thermal medical imaging provides a valuable method for detecting various diseases such as breast cancer or Raynaud’s syndrome. While previous efforts on the automated processing on thermal infrared images were designed for and hence constrained to a certain type of disease we apply the concept of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) as a more generic approach to the problem. CBIR allows the retrieval of similar images based on features extracted directly from image data. Image retrieval for a thermal image that shows symptoms of a certain disease will provide visually similar cases which usually also represent similarities in medical terms. The image features we investigate in this study are a set of combinations of geometric image moments which are invariant to translation, scale, rotation and contrast. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Model of corona for an EMTP study of surge propagation along HV transmission lines

A mathematical model of the phenomenon of corona on an HV transmission fine under the influence of overvoltage surges is presented. This model has been incorporated into the alternative-transient-program/electromagnetic-transients-program (ATP-EMTP) as a user-defined component, using the MODELS feature of this program. This component has been inserted as a nonlinear voltage-dependent capacitance at regular intervals along the transmission fine, in order to compute the attenuation and distortion of the lightning-induced surges as they propagate along the line. The proposed model is verified thoroughly by an extensive comparison of the simulation results from the paper with direct measurements by previous authors in the course of a number of physical tests, as well as with results of simulations by other authors. It is shown in the paper that the omission of the corona phenomenon can lead to noticeable errors in the assessment of both the steepness and peak value of the surge waveform as it propagates along the line. These facts are especially relevant to the problem of insulation co-ordination on overhead lines. The model used in the paper is applied to a study of the lightning performance of 110 kV overhead fines.

This paper introduces the concept of self-modifying workflow in the context of health care planning. Certain tasks in the workflow schema are devoted to modifying the downstream workflow on an instance by instance basis. Such self-modifying schemas provide the necessary flexibility to suit the evolving diagnostic and therapeutic processes Encountered in Chronic Disease Management (CDM), particularly in complex areas requiring significant individualisation. The management of Diabetes Mellitus in a community care setting provides an example to illustrate this complexity. Over the past few years, object-oriented modelling tools of inheritance and specialisation have been applied to workflow modelling to assist in schema evolution and workflow migration, thereby potentially empowering new Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) with the functionality to allow the tailoring of Guideline-based Care Plans to individual patient requirements. However, schema evolution is a necessary but insufficient requirement for such tailoring. Healthcare WfMSs need to support a paradigm whereby schema evolution becomes a de facto operation for each workflow instance (i.e. patient episode of care). Self-modifying workflows provide this paradigm. In order to facilitate self-modification of workflow schemas, we annunciate a set of valid operations that can be applied to downstream components of a workflow schema. These operations are primarily concerned with turning abstract subworkflows into concrete ones through completion and alteration of template primitives.

One of the challenges for 3D multi-user virtual simulation environments (3D MUVEs) developers is to keep the shared virtual simulation environment synchronized among all the participating users' terminals. Support to 3DMUVEs through traditional client-server communication model offers simpler management but can lead to bottlenecks and higher latencies. Peer-to-peer communication model, on the other hand, offers no central coordination but are more complex to manage. Current peer-to-peer networks, such as KaZaA and Gnutella, provide multimedia sharing services but do not support multiuser 3D virtual environment applications. This paper describes a solution to support 3D MUVEs in a hybrid peer-to-peer Gnutella network, which provides session control and distributed shared virtual environment synchronization. As a result of this work, two components specified by the ongoing multiuser extension to the MPEG-4 standard were implemented and integrated to the Gnutella network for control and synchonization. This solution minimizes the disadvantages of client-server, pure peer-to-peer and proxy-based models. The results show the number of users per session that can be supported with acceptable delays for tasks such as collaborative editing and for highly interactive applications such as action,games.

The hybrid strategy-based modeling approach is a method for reducing the number of network packets that need to be transmitted to maintain global consistency in Distributed Interactive Applications. It combines a short-term model such as dead reckoning with a long-term strategy model. A key aspect of this approach is to determine strategies that users adopt in navigating the simulated environment to satisfy some objective or goal. Computer-generated artificial entities called BOTS, navigate by employing an Artificial Intelligence technique called path finding. This paper proposes using the A* pathfinding algorithm to automatically compute strategies that human users might take through the simulated environment. Since the A* algorithm operates on a graph representation of the environment and because of the real-time constraints imposed on Distributed Interactive Applications, the paper also carries out a comparative analysis of two extreme graph representations of the environment - a standard regular grid and a minimal grid representation. The comparison shows that the minimal grid leads to an order of magnitude reduction in real-time computation compared to the regular grid. In addition the paths computed using the minimal grid and the A* algorithm are used to determine strategy models as part of the hybrid strategy-based modeling approach. It is shown that this reduces the network traffic required to maintain global consistency of entity dynamics in two simulated environments.

In this paper, we propose a two-level framework to detect interesting events automatically based on Audio and Visual Keywords (AVKs). The first level extracts low-level features such as motion, color, texture, pitch etc to detect video segments boundaries and label segments as audio and visual keywords. Next, we extract the exciting break portions from the AVK sequence. Then, we use two Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to model the exciting break portions with and without goal event respectively. We have applied the proposed approach to the detection of goal event in six half matches of soccer videos (270 minutes, 14 goals) from FIFA 2002 and UEFA 2002 and achieve 90% precision and 100% recall respectively. © 2004 IEEE.

Blind people navigate safely through a familiar room based on strong expectations about the location of objects. If something has been moved, added or removed, it can present a difficulty and potentially a danger. This paper reports a novel prototype vision-based monitoring application developed as part of research into supportive home environments. It uses ceiling-mounted cameras to monitor rooms in the home for significant changes and automatically generates spoken warnings when appropriate. Significant object-level changes are detected and characterized based on fused region-level change detection modules. These use complementary pixel-level change detectors to obtain a degree of invariance to illumination changes. Results obtained using realistic video data are presented. © 2004 IEEE.

New challenges in Software Testing arise from evaluating Pervasive computing Systems, which are a special type of component-based software. Transparent interconnection of components becomes highly important when users need to switch between operative contexts. Dynamic assembly requires evaluating components to ensure they conform to the updated system's requirements, and components semantical information could be analysed with a proper Ontology. Thus, our focus is set on Semantic Interoperability. We present an abstract model of an infrastructure integrated with an evaluation process, by applying testing strategies based on contextual information of components and user tasks. A typical case study is used to present both static and dynamic aspects of participating components. To improve this description we show the components' dynamic interaction by a temporal model from which testing strategies could be more precisely defined and applied. © 2004 IEEE.

The research focuses on a technique to learn the basic motions and an emergence of new motions with emotions for entertainment robots. The proposed system consists of hierarchical Sandglass-type Neural Networks(SNNs) and Emotional Factors Attached Network(EFAN) which transforms learned motions into emotional motions. A SNN can work as a non-linear PCA(Principal Component Analysis). Each SNN extracts position features from joint angles of a robot and motion features from time-series position features. The trained SNNs can reconstruct the learned motions corresponding to the motion features. Emotions are assumed to be expressed by some emotional factors such as speed, boldness, facial expression and so on. As training EFAN using the parameters of emotional factors and motion features, EFAN generates emotional additions applied to basic motions. The proposed system generates basic motions and emotional motions with feature parameters.

In this paper, we propose a framework to label soccer video shots with pre-defined visual keywords to bridge the semantic gap between low-level features and semantic understanding. Based on these visual keywords, further structure analysis and event detection will be facilitated. In our system, a MPEG-1 soccer video stream is partitioned into shots, from which each P-Frame is converted into color-based and edge-based binary maps. Then, we detect the playing field and segment the Regions of Interest (ROIs) inside the playing field. Finally two support vector machine classifiers and some decision rules are applied to the properties of the ROIs such as size, position, texture ratio, etc and the position of the playing field to label the video shot with visual keyword. We have applied the proposed method to 3495 soccer video shots and achieved 94.3% and 97.2% average precision and recall respectively.
