A solely excitatory oscillator network (SEON) is proposed for scene segmentation. SEON achieves synchronization and desynchronization between neural oscillators rapidly in an oscillator network. The synchronization speed is independent of the number of oscillators, enabling rapid synchronization in a very large network. SEON adopts a segmentation method that produces reliable segmentation results in a highly parallel manner. The segmentation speed will not decrease in a very large network, allowing SEON to utilize its invariant synchronization speed properties. Using a gallery of 1200 images, our model shows an average segmentation rate of over 98%. It produces continuous boundaries and is very efficient in the detection of vague boundaries. Compared with other contemporary segmentation methods, SEON provides promising results in both segmentation power and speed. The improvement of speed becomes more significant for large images.

This paper presents M-Planning, a mobile tool to support collaborative planning, and its conjunction use with the I-X Process Panels. M-Planning works like an intelligent mobile panel for agents on the move. The tool permits agents' interaction, visualisation and manipulation of information related to collaborative processes of planning. The architecture of the M-Planning tool is integrated with the I-X System, and based on some of its concepts. The relevant I-X concepts for this work are discussed in the paper. M-Planning is intended to be used in real world domains and applications. To motivate and illustrate M-Planning use, a mixed initiative planning application is described in a fictitious scenario of disaster relief operations.

We present a battery-efficient task execution methodology for portable Reconfigurable computing (RC) platforms. We implement a given algorithm with varying power-performance levels: we call these implementations, Cores and each core is characterized in terms of its power and performance levels. Core change and/or the frequency change are the two mechanisms used to vary the battery consumption. We consider two cases for single task execution: one increasing the performance with a battery life constraint and the other prolonging the battery life with a performance constraint. The execution time of each task is divided into equal time intervals, called slots. A Simulated Annealing based algorithm is used to find the best constraint-satisfying sequence of cores offlime. Our results show a 50% increase in the total work done (case 1) and 61% increase in battery life (case 2), by using this methodology when compared to a system not using it. The combined effect of both cases is applied to a multiple task execution and the results are reported.

Airflow over mountainous terrain can produce stationary atmospheric waves in the lee of the mountains that have large vertical air velocities. These waves are used as sources of lift by sailplane pilots. Methods are developed for inverting flight data of airspeed and GPS-derived position to obtain estimates of the vector windspeed in mountain waves. Data from flight path segments with significantly different ground velocities within a region of constant windspeed give a well-determined solution for the windspeed. The methods are applied to flight data from a Perlan Project flight in lee waves of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

This paper describes our investigation in ethology approaches to build proactive anticipatory virtual characters. The control architecture of the characters is based on two Reinforcement Learning Algorithms: the zeroth-level Classifier system (ZCS) and the Q-Learning Algorithm. The ZCS consists of inter-connected functional components, each of which is a container of classifiers that evolve through interactions with the environment, and the multiplicity and recursion of the interconnected sub-units of the control system. In the Q-Learning control system, the Q algorithm is combined with eligibility traces, a temporary reward assignment mechanism. Both systems are tested and the results are compared in this framework to investigate the complexity of Reinforcement Learning algorithms and their application in the creation of proactive virtual characters that have internal needs and can discover optimal ways of achieving a predefined goal through the evolutionary learning process.

The present paper proposes a compact representation for the transmission line models based on modal transformation. The distributed parameter TL model present at the majority of the electromagnetic transient programs is taken into account. The proposed model takes advantage of the similarities between non-homopolar modes and applies orthogonal vectors to manipulate the state variables in modal domain. The proposed method is applied to a single-circuit three-phase line represented through the distributed parameter model (EMTP). The resources employed promote a reduction both of the number of operations by iteration and of the allocation of states, optimizing the procedure and increasing the processing speed of simulation.

As mobile device prevails, requests about various services using mobile device have increased. Specially, requests of application services that need large data space such as multimedia, game, database [1] greatly increased. However, mobile appliance has difficulty in applying various services like wire environment because the storage capacity of the one is not enough. Therefore, researches [4] which provide remote storage service for mobile appliance using iSCSI are being progressed to overcome storage space limitation of mobile appliance. But, when iSCSI is applied for Mobile appliance, iSCSI I/O performance drops rapidly if iSCSI client moves from server to far away position. It is because iSCSI has structural quality to be very sensitive at delay time. In this paper, we introduce intermediate target server and localize iSCSI target to improve the shortcoming that iSCSI performance drops sharply according as latency increases when mobile appliance recedes from storage server.

Network Centric Information Infrastructure (NCII) is a toolkit of prefabricated software components together with a composition framework for integration and experimentation. Typical distributed system applications of a toolkit such as NCH can be applied to air traffic management, shop floor control and in-flight connection to Internet. The composition framework has gone though through three generations of changes in the past five years and it is a good illustration of a paradigm shift from Object-Oriented Architecture, through Component-Based Architecture to Service-Based Architecture.
