In this paper, we describe such an environment, in which the user can be presented in real-time with an alternative range of consequences for a given interaction with virtual world objects, thus inducing various perceptions of causality. From a systemic perspective, we can adopt a pragmatic approach, inspired from Humian philosophy, which considers that causal relations are established by the user in response to certain event co-occurrences. To control causal perception in VR, the system comprises the following components: a visualisation engine, an Event Recognition System (together with its specific event formalism that supports event modification), and a causal engine as an Event Modification System, which selects co-occurring events on a rule-based manner. A search process, evaluates alternative consequences using semantic and spatio-contiguity information, such as comparison between candidate objects on which the action consequences should be applied. A first prototype has been fully implemented and is described together with an example real-time simulation. © 2004 IEEE.

In the absence of absolute localization tools such as GPS, a robot can still successfully navigate by conducting Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). All SLAM algorithms to date can only be applied in one environment at a time. In this paper we propose to extend SLAM to multi-environments. In SmartSLAM, the robot first classifies its entourage using environment recognition code and then performs SLAM using landmarks that are appropriate for its surrounding milieu. One thousand images of various indoor and outdoor environments were collected and used as training data for a three-layered feedforward backpropagation neural network. This neural network was then tested on two sets of query images of indoor environments and another two sets of outdoor environments, yielding 83% and 95% correct classification rates for the indoor images and 80% and 79% success rates for the outdoor images. © 2004 IEEE.

Intelligent Transportation Systems are characterised by a requirement for detailed information on extensive transport networks. This information is typically gathered from sensors deployed throughout the network and is used for management and maintenance *** this paper we present the design and prototype implementation of a context-aware route profiling application intended for use by road management authorities in the Republic of Ireland. Our design allows data from a variety of sources to be combined to generate detailed information on traffic flow and journey times along the national road network. This information can be tagged with relevant context data reflecting the conditions under which sensor data was collected. The set of relevant contextual information includes details on temporal, spatial, weather and road usage pattern *** prototype implementation relies on GPS data from a fleet of probe vehicles. An evaluation of this prototype is presented along with a discussion on the benefits of using context-aware computing techniques in a real world scenario.

We describe a very intricate case of interlocked bio-processes: the blood clotting cascade, by using a set of tools from object-oriented design (OOD). Originally, OOD has been designed for the abstract specification of complex software prior to programming. OOD brings a handful of concepts such as modularity, classes, methods and their inheritance hierarchies for concurrent process synchronization and cooperation. It appears that the set of OOD methods can be a very fruitful tool for the abstract description of biological processes apparently quite far away from software engineering. We give a moderately detailed view of the blood clotting cascade using the standard tool of OOD: Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its extension: Real-Time UML.

The algorithm presented in this paper performs data encryption by serially concatenating two transform stages. The outer stage uses one of the orthogonal matrices obtained from the singular value decomposition (SVD) of an arbitrary signal, such as white noise or the sum of cosines of different frequencies. The inner stage of encryption uses a fast, parallelized wavelet filter bank using the algorithm presented by Koh and Rodriguez-Marek [1]. This algorithm is generalized for an arbitrary number of nodes and decomposition levels. Past algorithms based on the wavelet packet tree structure present a drawback for band-limited signals, because attackers can guess the approximate frequency bands of the wavelet decomposition. In this paper, the algorithm uses orthogonal matrices generated by the SVD, which spread the frequency content of the signal into the available spectrum when applied to the original vector. Furthermore, the algorithm is based on parallelized filter banks, which provide a flexible and highly adaptive structure for encryption and decryption. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper presents the work of a learning and teaching project that integrates the problem-based learning (PBL), Web-based support and action project learning (APL) approaches for teaching information systems development. Web-based support tools were applied to the various stages of the problem-based learning strategy. These tools and facilities include problem analysis, brainstorming, project planning, private area for collaborative learning, and bulletin board for display of good work. Through teamwork, students developed leadership, interpersonal communication and social skills. Also, with some real-life projects on campus, students had the opportunity to relate theory to practice and to integrate the various stages of system development to provide total solutions to problems. A graduate survey questionnaire was used to measure the learning and teaching outcomes related to the generic skills of an IT professional after the completion of the project. The results have been found to be positive and are discussed. This paper also presents the strategies of teaching and learning activities which possibly contribute to positive learning outcomes. Some experience for the use of PBL with Web-based support tools and APL are also presented.

Relational data mining deals with datasets containing multiple types of objects and relationships that are presented in relational formats, e.g. relational databases that have multiple tables. This paper proposes a prepositional hierarchical model-based method for clustering relational data. We first define an object-relational star schema to model composite objects, and present a method of flattening composite objects into aggregate objects by introducing a new type of aggregates - frequency aggregate, which can be used to record not only the observed values but also the distribution of the values of an attribute. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm with log-likelihood distance is then applied to cluster the aggregated data tentatively. After stopping at a coarse estimate of the number of clusters, a mixture model-based method with the EM algorithm is developed to perform a further relocation clustering, in which Bayes Information Criterion is used to determine the optimal number of clusters. Finally we evaluate our approach on a real-world dataset.

Home networks and the interconnection of home appliances is a classical theme in ubiquitous computing research. Security is a recurring concern, but there is a lack of awareness of safety: preventing the computerized house from harming the inhabitants, even in a worst-case scenario where an unauthorized user gains remote control of the facilities. We address this safety issue at the middleware level by restricting the operations that can be performed on devices according to the physical location of the user initiating the request. Operations that pose a potential safety hazard can only be performed within a physical proximity that ensures safety. We use a declarative approach integrated with an IDL language to express location-based restrictions on operations. This model has been implemented in a middleware for home audio-video devices, using infrared communication and a local-area network to implement location awareness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
