This information is typically gathered from sensors deployed throughout the network and is used for management and maintenance *** this paper we present the design and prototype implementation of a context-aware route profiling application intended for use by road management authorities in the Republic of Ireland. Our design allows data from a variety of sources to be combined to generate detailed information on traffic flow and journey times along the national road network. This information can be tagged with relevant context data reflecting the conditions under which sensor data was collected. The set of relevant contextual information includes details on temporal, spatial, weather and road usage pattern *** prototype implementation relies on GPS data from a fleet of probe vehicles. An evaluation of this prototype is presented along with a discussion on the benefits of using context-aware computing techniques in a real world scenario.

We describe a very intricate case of interlocked bio-processes: the blood clotting cascade, by using a set of tools from object-oriented design (OOD). Originally, OOD has been designed for the abstract specification of complex software prior to programming. OOD brings a handful of concepts such as modularity, classes, methods and their inheritance hierarchies for concurrent process synchronization and cooperation. It appears that the set of OOD methods can be a very fruitful tool for the abstract description of biological processes apparently quite far away from software engineering. We give a moderately detailed view of the blood clotting cascade using the standard tool of OOD: Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its extension: Real-Time UML.

This paper presents the work of a learning and teaching project that integrates the problem-based learning (PBL), Web-based support and action project learning (APL) approaches for teaching information systems development. Web-based support tools were applied to the various stages of the problem-based learning strategy. These tools and facilities include problem analysis, brainstorming, project planning, private area for collaborative learning, and bulletin board for display of good work. Through teamwork, students developed leadership, interpersonal communication and social skills. Also, with some real-life projects on campus, students had the opportunity to relate theory to practice and to integrate the various stages of system development to provide total solutions to problems. A graduate survey questionnaire was used to measure the learning and teaching outcomes related to the generic skills of an IT professional after the completion of the project. The results have been found to be positive and are discussed. This paper also presents the strategies of teaching and learning activities which possibly contribute to positive learning outcomes. Some experience for the use of PBL with Web-based support tools and APL are also presented.

Relational data mining deals with datasets containing multiple types of objects and relationships that are presented in relational formats, e.g. relational databases that have multiple tables. This paper proposes a prepositional hierarchical model-based method for clustering relational data. We first define an object-relational star schema to model composite objects, and present a method of flattening composite objects into aggregate objects by introducing a new type of aggregates - frequency aggregate, which can be used to record not only the observed values but also the distribution of the values of an attribute. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm with log-likelihood distance is then applied to cluster the aggregated data tentatively. After stopping at a coarse estimate of the number of clusters, a mixture model-based method with the EM algorithm is developed to perform a further relocation clustering, in which Bayes Information Criterion is used to determine the optimal number of clusters. Finally we evaluate our approach on a real-world dataset.
