Summary form only given. Modeling fluid flow in a porous medium is a challenging computational problem. It involves closely coupled systems of flow transport process consisted of highly heterogeneous distributions of porous medium property, various fluid flow characteristics including injection or production well assemblies, and surface separation and storage facilities. For the design of better flow management scheme, high performance computing tools have been applied as a useful and essential technique in a cost-effective manner. In recent years, grid computing architectures have been emerging as a new computing environment. It allows a powerful computing capability for accurate simulation of complex fluid flow phenomena that occur in porous media. In this paper, grid-enabled simulation approach is presented for modeling a three dimensional, multiphase fluid flow in the grid computing environment Extensive test results of the code are presented in this paper. The preliminary result shows a significant parallel performance. Based on this preliminary study, we further discuss a future plan for the design of multipurpose porous media flow simulator, which allows multiphysical simulation capability in grid computing environment.

This paper presents a simple approach for rendering isosurfaces of a scalar field. Using the vertex programming capability of commodity graphics cards, we transfer the cost of computing an isosurface from the Central Processing Unit (CPU), running the main application, to the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), rendering the images. We consider a tetrahedral decomposition of the domain and draw one quadrangle (quad) primitive per tetrahedron. A vertex program transforms the quad into the piece of isosurface within the tetrahedron (see Figure 2). In this way, the main application is only devoted to streaming the vertices of the tetrahedra from main memory to the graphics card. For adaptively refined rectilinear grids, the optimization of this streaming process leads to the definition of a new 3D space-filling curve, which generalizes the 2D Sierpinski curve used for efficient rendering of triangulated terrains. We maintain the simplicity of the scheme when constructing view-dependent adaptive refinements of the domain mesh. In particular, we guarantee the absence of T-junctions by satisfying local bounds in our nested error basis. The expensive stage of fixing cracks in the mesh is completely avoided. We discuss practical tradeoffs in the distribution of the workload between the application and the graphics hardware. With current GPU's it is convenient to perform certain computations on the main CPU. Beyond the performance considerations that will change with the new generations of GPU's this approach has the major advantage of avoiding completely the storage in memory of the isosurface vertices and triangles. © The Eurographics Association 2004.

A portable programmable opto-electronic analogic CNN computer (Laptop-POAC) has been built and used to recognize and track targets. Its kernel processor is a novel type of high performance optical correlator based on the use of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) as a dynamic holographic material. This optical CNN implementation combines the optical computer's high speed, high parallelism (approximate to10(6) channel) and large applicable template sizes with flexible programmability of the CNN devices. Unique feature of this optical array computer is that programining templates can be applied either by a 2D acousto-optical deflector (up to 64x64 pixel size templates) incoherently or by an LCD-SLM (up to 128x 128 size templates) coherently. So it can work both in totally coherent and partially incoherent way, utilizing the actual advantages of the used mode of operation. Input images are fed-in by a second LCD-SLM of 600x800 pixel resolution. Evaluation of trade-off between speed and resolution is given. Novel and effective target recognition and multiple-target-tracking algorithms have been developed for the POAC. Tracking experiments are demonstrated. Collision avoidance experiments are being conducted. In the present model a CCD camera is recording the correlograms, however, later a CNN-UM chip and a high-speed CMOS camera will be applied for post-processing.

Advances in networking technologies are opening integration opportunities for Condition Based Monitoring (CBM) systems, presenting further possibilities for increasing CBM system functionality. This paper presents the results of a CBM Survey designed to determine present applications of CBM systems within industry. Understanding how industry applies practices such as CBM in the work place offers valuable research results for CBM system providers, consultants and business users alike. The survey acts as a CBM application indicator for 2004. It targets 6 key areas: 1) Respondents' company information, 2) The type of CBM technique/s applied by the respondents' company, 3) Incentives that led the respondents' company to implement their CBM system, 4) Technological and integration issues associated with respondents' application of CBM, 5) Implementation issues associated with the respondents' CBM system, and 6) Reliability and consequential maintenance awareness issues following implementation. An international response shows CBM to be a globally accepted maintenance practice. In addition to the survey results, the paper discusses developments in remote CBM systems using the Internet, with particular regard for developing suitable user interface designs.

Most decision tree induction methods used for extracting knowledge in classification problems are unable to deal with uncertainties embedded within the data, associated with human thinking and perception. This paper describes the development of a novel tree induction algorithm which improves the classification accuracy of decision tree induction in non-deterministic domains. The research involved applies the principles of fuzzy theory to the CHAID (Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection) algorithm in order to soften the sharp decision boundaries which are inherent in traditional decision tree algorithms. CHAID is a decision tree induction algorithm with the main feature of significance testing at each level, leading to the production of trees which require no pruning. The application of fuzzy logic to CHAID decision trees can represent classification knowledge more naturally and inline with human thinking and are more robust when it comes to handling imprecise, missing or conflicting information. The results of applying fuzzy logic to CHAID induced decision trees are presented in this paper. These have been obtained from sets of real world data, and show that the new fuzzy inference algorithm improves the accuracy over crisp CHAID trees. The results show that the increase in performance is dependant upon the inference technique employed and the amount of fuzzification applied.

In this paper we report outcomes of our computational analysis applied to time-series gene expression data generated by Kagami et al [7]. Gene expression data were generated using Affimetrix chips and validated by quantitative RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) expression analysis of 12 randomly selected and differentially expressed genes. The biotin-labelled cRNA samples generated from mouse cerebella samples were collected at five developmental stages: 1 prenatal (embryonic day 18 or E18) and 4 postnatal at 7, 14, 21 and 56 days (P7, P14, P21 and P56). We propose APRIORI-GST, an APRIORI-like algorithm that uses a GST index for discovering sequential patterns from microarray data. From the extracted patterns we outline the hypothesis that there is a lot of gene activity between the prenatal stage E18 and postnatal stage P7, which needs to be further investigated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, priority dropping mechanism (PDM) is applied to RED algorithm to protect the video layers selectively from performance and throughput deterioration. Moreover, to achieve fairness among different type of the network traffic with PDM, packet classification scheme (PCS) is implemented to assign the priority to each SPLIT layer or packet based upon the target rate.

This paper studies the generic architecture and coordination mechanism of an FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) compliant heterogeneous multi-agent system (MAS) in a distributed control scenario. Proposed generic MAS framework has been applied to a real-time traffic detection and management system. The agent-based real-time traffic detection and management system (ABRTTDMS) is designed for the information fusion of different traffic detection systems on highways to optimize real-time traffic detection and management. ABRTTDMS is a multi-level agent system. The lowest level agents are responsible for processing the real-time traffic data and monitoring traffic conditions. The middle level agents coordinate all of the lowest level agents in a sub-network. The highest-level agent is located in the transportation management center (TMC) to accept human commands and delegate tasks to lower level agents. The re-configurable hybrid control architecture of the system provides the capability of dynamically grouping distributed heterogeneous agents (intelligent control systems) into virtual clusters to accomplish tasks related to different geographical areas and different purposes. A platform independent agent execution engine has been implemented using an embeddable C/C++ interpreter called Ch. The communication between agents that reside on different hosts has been simulated in the Integration Engineering Laboratory at the University of California, Davis. The use of agent technology greatly enhances the distributed computing and cooperation capabilities of traffic detection and management systems.

This paper details the principle of the active DC filter (ADF) applied in the High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system, and proposes a novel composite control strategy composed of an approximate inverse system open-loop control and a closed-loop control. The harmonic source current and the compensation current are respectively measured as the reference signal and the feedback signal. A filter bank is adopted to compose the approximate inverse system controller, which is the key controller in the composite control strategy. Both results of simulations based on PSCAD and experiments on a 30kVA HVDC system validate that the ADF adopting the proposed control strategy is able to cancel the harmonics efficiently because of the advantages of the approximate inverse system controller and the absence of the extraction of weak signal from noise. The work is expected to build the prototype of the future industrial equipment.

The popularity of real-time audio and video streaming applications on the Internet has burdened the congestion control mechanisms and highlighted the fairness concerns with misbehaving flows. The type and amount of traffic on the network is causing degradation of services to users in the Internet community. Packet Pair Layered Multicast protocol is based on cumulative layered multicasting that enables the bottleneck bandwidth to be inferred by the use of a packet pair mechanism. Increased complexity in PLM might hinder the deployment of the protocol in the wider network. This is due to the increased state stored in network routers and the propagation of dual packets in the network. In this paper, we discuss the development of the Adaptive Layered Multicast protocol to regulate and distribute available bandwidth to heterogeneous receivers without the complexities associated with PLM.
