To provide health care and medical practice remotely over the network, colour plays a very important part in producing reality situations. However, most currently telemedicine care systems do not provide accurate colour information that sometimes is key information in making diagnosis. This paper reviews the necessary procedures to achieve colour fidelity for telemedicine and deals with colour transmission from one monitor to another, part of the problems on colour reproduction in telemedicine. It presents the evaluation results on Spyder with OptiCAL colour management system from PANTONE ColorVision Inc. Two LCD monitors are applied. One is with 15" monitor running Windows 98 operating system;the other with 17" monitor runing Windows XP system. Initial measurement and visual matching results show that both measurement and visual matching results are different for the primary colours including red, green, blue, white and black across two monitors. Some recommendations are given in order to improve the visual matching of colours across the monitors.

We introduce the concept of selectable knowledge, which models the information stored in an arbitrary (e.g., quantum mechanical) device. We then analyze a situation where an entity A holds selectable knowledge about some random variable X and quantify the information A has about the output H(X) of a randomly chosen function H applied to X. This generalizes the setting of privacy amplification by universal hashing. In particular, our result can be used to prove that privacy amplification remains secure even if the enemy possesses quantum instead of classical information.

Web services are the key technology for implementing distributed enterprise level applications such as B2B and grid computing. An important goal is to provide dependable quality guarantees for client-server interactions. Therefore, service level management (SLM) is gaining more and more significance for clients and providers of Web services. The first step to control service level agreements is a proper instrumentation of the application code in order to monitor the service performance. However, manual instrumentation of Web services is very costly and error-prone and thus not very efficient. Our goal was to develop a systematic and automated, tool-supported approach for Web services instrumentation. We present a dual approach for efficiently instrumenting Web services. It consists of instrumenting the frontend Web services platform as well as the backend services. Although the instrumentation of the Web services platform necessarily is platform-specific, we have found a general, reusable approach. On the backend-side aspect-oriented programming techniques are successfully applied to instrument backend services. We present experimental studies of performance instrumentation using the application response measurement (ARM) API and evaluate the efficiency of the monitoring enhancements. Our results point the way to systematically gain better insights into the behaviour of Web services and thus how to build more dependable Web-based applications.

The paper describes a ARM-based Bluetooth wireless system for biosignal recording and monitoring. The architecture is composed of two functional blocks: an ECG pre-processing board to acquire differential signals and a 8-channel DSP system. The acquisition, the digital processing and the transmission control are performed by an ARM7 chip. The transmission is carried out using a Bluetooth chip interfaced to a computer or a PDA. This device addresses the new concepts of ubiquitous sensing and computing applied to health care: in particular it was validated in a wearable and environmental ECG setup. With these devices new frontiers of applications in ambient intelligence and home care are going to be explored to expand the diffusion of a similar approach on ARM-based products.

In this paper, a new digital control strategy of an active power filter adopting an approximate inverse system control strategy is discussed. The proposed approximate inverse system control is composed of digital band-pass filters, phase shifters and amplifiers, all which can be implemented with a TMS320C32 DSP. After the comparison of the performance of IIR digital filter with FIR digital filter, the former is preferred to be adopted here. The results of both simulations based on PSCAD and experiments on a 30kVA HVDC system validate that the digital. controller can ensure the good performance of APF without the stability problem.

We present a new model for finding a suitable differential characteristics with applying intelligent techniques. We describe the model for Serpent, and find suitable differential characteristics with it through an approach which we call forward-backward technique. Our description may be generalized to find suitable differential characteristics for any block cipher. The model represents the problem of finding the best differential characteristic for a block cipher algorithm as the problem of finding the shortest path in a weighted directed graph. Then, we applied Ant-colony technique for finding the shortest path in the directed graph. In this way, we reached two advantages. Firstly, by applying this method, one can obtain a suitable result without examining the whole search space. Secondly, intelligent techniques such as Ant-colony technique may reduce dependency of cryptanalysis to cryptanalyser.

In this paper we develop a framework for fast profiling and quality verification of datasets for language engineering and information retrieval research. The profiling steps consist of an initial tokenization of the corpus to produce a frequency list from which some basic statistics are derived. Manual sampling is carried out to detect obvious discrepancies. Two diagnostic tests are performed to check for sparseness related measures. The behaviour of the function words is traced to gauge homogeneity of their distribution in documents.

We introduce a novel notion of flow of information, "Slow Information," which is defined as the flow causing structural changes to a spatio-temporal structure, the Tapestry of Space and Time, of persons or a society. This definition is based on the Leibnizian conception of Space and Time, which contrasts with the common conception: the Newtonian conception of Space and Time. In the latter conception, information flow does not affect the spatio-temporal structure of persons, while in the former conception the structure may be changed profoundly and slowly via the flow of information, Slow Information. Consequently this new aspect of information is applied to environmental design problems via Alexander's Pattern Language. In addition, we discuss its application to caring communication based on Nursing Theory and Naive Psychology.

We propose a multiclass (MC) classification approach to text categorization (TC). To fully take advantage of both positive and negative training examples, a maximal figure-of-merit (MFoM) learning algorithm is introduced to train high performance MC classifiers. In contrast to conventional binary classification, the proposed MC scheme assigns a uniform score function to each category for each given test sample, and thus the classical Bayes decision rules can now be applied. Since all the MC MFoM classifiers are simultaneously trained, we expect them to be more robust and work better than the binary MFoM classifiers, which are trained separately and are known to give the best TC performance. Experimental results on the Reuters-21578 TC task indicate that the MC MFoM classifiers achieve a micro-averaging F1 value of 0.377, which is significantly better than 0.138, obtained with the binary MFoM classifiers, for the categories with less than 4 training samples. Furthermore, for all 90 categories, most with large training sizes, the MC MFoM classifiers give a micro-averaging F1 value of 0.888, better than 0.884, obtained with the binary MFoM classifiers.
