Crucial for the performance of peer-to-peer networks based on geometric topologies is the measurement complexity and quality of the mapping function used to map a node in the network to a point in the geometric target space. In this paper we study how results from mathematics as well as data mining can be applied to this mapping problem. Using a metric space model for networks and results from mathematics a relation between the number of nodes to be mapped, the worst case error of the mapping and the dimension of the geometric target space is formulated. As a main result geometric cluster placement (GCP) is presented, an improved and resilient placement algorithm based on GNP. An evaluation of GCP presented is based on measurement data from the RIPE NCC test traffic measurement (TTM) project.

Most XML-enabled database management systems can only translate a few relations into an XML document. Moreover, the translation is without data semantics constraints consideration, which may not be sufficient for information highway on the Web. The demand on database is increased in e-commerce. Not only relational database (RDB) is needed for traditional data processing, but also its equivalent XML documents (database) are needed for B2B applications. Therefore, performance for online conversion from relational data to XML document is an issue. This paper aims to create a replicate XML database for a company's RDB to improve database performance, and to automate XML database recovery in case of system failures. For any successful update to the RDB, corresponding update will be applied to its replicate XML database. The result is an incrementally maintained XML database for efficient and effective computing for e-commerce. In summary, Internet computing performance can be improved because a replicate XML database and its counterpart RDB can be parallel processing for both internal data and external data transmission on the Internet. Furthermore, an XML database can be recovered by its counterpart RDB once it is down.

To address the need to improve the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP) at Virginia Tech, the college relied upon the expertise of students completing graduate theses and group projects in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. This arrangement allowed graduate students to work on real problems as well as conduct applied research projects for an organization - the College of Engineering. The students benefited from the experience and the college benefited from the result. CGEP is a coalition of five Virginia universities that deliver engineering graduate degree programs through distance learning. Three years ago this program was under review by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Given that the CGEP director and administrators were new to this program, it was a high priority to establish metrics to determine the program's success. Another high priority was to search for expertise in the area of performance measurements. During the past three years, progress has been made in creating a continuous-process improvement plan for the program through the application of management systems methodologies. This paper discusses how graduate student expertise was used to assist with improving administrative aspects of the CGEP. It also describes the progression of projects and how data was analyzed and used to establish future direction. The concept described in this paper is traditional, yet the success of the methods used to improve the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program offers a new way to apply management system methodologies.

We address a key issue that arises in run-time recomposition of software: the transfer of nontransient state between old components and their replacements. We focus on the concept of collateral change, which refers to the set of recomposition actions that must be applied atomically for continued correct execution of the system. We describe Perimorph, a system that supports compositional adaptation of both functional and nonfunctional concerns by explicitly addressing collateral change. The operation of Perimorph is demonstrated through the implementation and testing of a 2D/3D digital elevation mapping application that supports recomposition and handoff among networked devices with varying capabilities.

Location management and message delivery protocol is fundamental to the further development of mobile agent systems in a multiregion mobile agent computing environment in order to control mobile agents and guarantee message delivery between them. However, previous works have some problems when they are applied to a multiregion mobile agent computing environment. First, the cost of location management and message delivery is increased relatively. Second, a following problem arises. Finally, cloned mobile agents and parent & child mobile agents don't get dealt with respect to location management and message delivery. We present a HB (home-blackboard) protocol which is a new location management and message delivery protocol for mobile agents in a multiregion mobile agent computing environment. We have implemented the HB protocol. The HB protocol decreases the cost of location management and message delivery and solves the following problem with low communication cost. In addition, the HB protocol deals with the location management and message delivery of cloned and parent & child mobile agents, so that it guarantees message delivery of these mobile agents.

Efficient load balancing algorithms are the key to many efficient parallel applications. Until now, research in this area mainly focused on static networks. However, observations show that diffusive algorithms, originally designed for these networks, can also be applied in nonstatic scenarios. In this paper we prove that the general diffusion scheme can be deployed on dynamic networks and show that its convergence rate depends on the average value of the quotient of the second smallest eigenvalue and the maximum vertex degree of the networks occurring during the iterations. In the presented experiments we illustrate that even if communication links of static networks fail with high probability, load can still be balanced quite efficiently. Simulating diffusion on ad-hoc networks we demonstrate that diffusive schemes provide a reliable and efficient load balancing strategy also in mobile environments.

A stochastic approximation method for optimizing a class of discrete functions is considered. The procedure is a version of the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) method that has been modified to obtain a stochastic optimization method for cost functions defined on a grid of points in Euclidean p-space having integer components. We discuss the algorithm and examine its convergence properties.

The scattering of a normally incident plane wave from an infinitely long, elliptical cylinder is investigated using the combined method of ray tracing and diffraction (CMRTD). Both horizontally and vertically polarized incident plane waves are considered. The analytical solution is given for the case when the size of the elliptical cylinder is large compared to the wavelength of the incident field, which is applied to simulate scattering from one row of elliptical trees in radiowave propagation. The numerical simulation results are presented and discussed.

The paper describes a soft computing agent approach to remote learning, which is applied to disabled people suffering from dyslexia. Dyslexia is defined as learning disability by four psychologically obtained factors that present grade of learning deficiency. They are preliminary provided for better understanding and formalization of remote learning process applied to disable people. The paper discusses selection of appropriate groups for definition of individual remote learning purposes. Soft computing agents are used to perform two tasks: optimal partitioning of distributed databases in accordance with a grade of disability, and coordination in distributed environment for remote group definition. The first task is realized via two-hierarchical fuzzy system for optimization of dyslectic parameters. The second is achieved by means of mobile intelligent agents for transmission, coordination, activation, and receiving decisions from/to remote learning nodes. As a final decision the node soliciting optimal group choice obtains information for the group distribution over the whole system.

This paper proposes the notion of an agent-based grid computing infrastructure (AGCI), which is developed to help manage the healthcare processes in real world settings. For healthcare practitioners and policy makers, the proposed agent-based grid approach will allow to combine patient records from vast number of hospitals, providing important of new data in the search for patient cures and treatments. The design and methodology of AGCI framework is based on globus and control of agent-based systems. The emerging intelligent agent-based grid framework applied to the healthcare domain provides interesting opportunities to operationalize the volumes of healthcare data routinely collected within numerous healthcare enterprises.
