Recent advances in Web and mobile computing technologies provide users with a vast amount of information and services such as news, shopping, music, movies, and video games. These services can be provided with different qualities in terms of response time, price to pay, resource type (e.g. PDA or mobile phone), and audio and video reproduction quality. These factors must be considered in order to achieve an acceptable level of quality of the required services. However, currently there are no standard criteria to assess the quality of such services. We propose novel agent-based criteria that include methods for assessing the quality of services and resources. These criteria, based on supply chain methods, enable agents to select and execute requests appropriately, depending on the quality of service and the underlying system's capability. The proposed approach is generic and can be applied to different domains such as e-commerce, m-commerce, and multimedia applications.

In this work, a new improved FEM approach is described for analyzing strain distributions, computing electronic structure, and simulating the optical property of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot. A window-based software FEMLAB has been employed for multiphysics simulation. This approach can be used as a guideline for fast quantum-dot device structure design, especially in quantum dot lasers and quantum dot infrared photodetectors. Furthermore, the proposed approach and model could be used to develop three-dimensional nano-device simulator with further specific device module.

Nonlinear conjugate gradient methods (CG) are typical unconstrained optimization methods. As the optimization problems to be solved become larger, the dependence on efficient and scalable software is severe. Toolkit for Advanced Optimization (TAO) is a parallel package that can currently solve several kinds of optimization problems. In this paper, we give the framework of several variants of CG: CGFR, CGPR, CGPRP and their implementations in TAO 1.5, which have been tested up to 64 processors on Dawning2000 to solve problems with up to 10 variables. The results show that the scalability of CG implementations in TAO 1.5 is excellent.

Provisioning goal specific information to the team enhances efficiency of the team. Context awareness is very important to provide such relevant information. We propose a context aware information retrieval system that retrieves, and presents, information of high utility to a user - taking into account user's implicit need for information, capabilities of the user's access device, and other resource constraints of the user. The information retrieved assists users in achieving the collaboration goals. The proposed context-aware information retrieval system analyzes user's history to derive an enhanced "context" that indicates why user needs the information and what format of information is most useful for the user. The system uses this context to determine the information most relevant to the immediate goal of the user.

The new fast Radon transform (NFRT) algorithm proposed by the authors is applied here to reconstruct the X-ray CT image. Satisfactory agreement between the original and reconstructed images was obtained. The algorithm does not require computation intensive data interpolation and convert directly between a raster scan grid and the rectangular/polar grid in one step as compared to the back-projection method. Most importantly the compatibility of this algorithm for the X-ray CT system is also verified here.

Based on both experimental observations and available numerical methods, an innovative 2D approach for determining droplet size during the atomization process has been developed. Based on experimental evidences (see [1] and [2]) atomization of turbulent high speed jets is assumed to occur in a two stage process: ligaments detachment and droplets formation. The simulation method here proposed wants to take the advantages typical of the two most effective methods in spray investigation. It joins LES (i.e Large Eddy Simulations) approach and Linear Stability Analysis: the first one is used to solve the liquid-air fluid dynamics interaction and in particular the instabilities leading to ligament formation. The second one is finally adopted to compute the droplet size spectrum from ligament break-up. Therefore dynamics of ligament formation is directly computed while droplet formation is modelled by using a Linear Stability Analysis. The numerical simulation adopts a VOF (i.e. Volume of Fluid) method to track liquid-gas interface. Turbulence effects on liquid surface are accounted for by adding a turbulent flow field at the nozzle exit which represents a part of the boundary condition of the computational domain. A physical criterion is then applied to detach ligaments from liquid jet surface which will reduce in diameter during simulation. The droplet formation is then computed by applying the linear stability analysis to the ligaments, assumed being circular and subject to circulation. An extensive validation and sensitivity analysis has been carried out in order to assess method advantages and limits. The experimental results of Wu et al. [3] and Hiroyasu et al. [4] were used as test cases. A sensitivity analysis has been performed under typical HSDI Diesel engine injection conditions. The method proved to exhibit promising attitude in the reconstruction of the droplet size spectrum depending on injection parameter or conditions.

In this paper we present the design of FolkMusic, a mobile peer-to-peer entertainment system. The work reported in this paper builds on the current trends towards: 1) edutainment software, 2) increase in use of peer-to-peer technologies, and, 3) the current trend towards mobile computing solutions. Further on, the research reported in this paper builds on prior research on "folk computing" for which mobile ad-hoc peer-to-peer solutions are a focal concern. Overall, this paper contributes to research on MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) and peer-to-peer (P2P) computing by illustrating how mobile peer-to-peer technologies can be applied to both the area of entertainment as well as for educational purposes. Further on, the FolkMusic system contributes to current technical efforts made on ad-hoc networks by providing a good example of how Internet technologies and similar stationary and stable infrastructures can be combined with highly dynamic and wireless networks.

During the last four years of operations, low technical downtime has been one of the relevant records of the Paranal Observatory. From the beginning of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) project, European Southern Observatory (ESO) has considered the implementation of a proper maintenance strategy a fundamental point in order to ensure low technical down time and preserve the Observatory's assets. The implementation of the maintenance strategy was based on the following aspects: Strong maintenance sense during the design stage. Line Replacement Unit (LRU) concept, standardization and modularity of the Observatory eququipment Creation of a dedicated team for Maintenance. The implementation of a Computerized Maintenance Management System. After four operational years, the result of these aspects has exceeded the expectations;the Observatory has been operating with high availability under a sustainable strategy. The strengths of the maintenance strategy have been based on modern maintenance concepts applied by regular production companies, where any minute of down time involves high cost. The operation of the actual Paranal Maintenance System is based mainly on proactive activities, such as regular inspections, preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) plans. Nevertheless, it has been necessary to implement a strong plan for corrective maintenance (CM). The Spare Parts Strategy has also been an important point linked to the Maintenance Strategy and CMMS implementation. At present, almost 4,000 items related to the Observatory spare parts are loaded into the CMMS database. Currently, we are studying the implementation of a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) project in one of our critical systems. The following document presents the actual status of the Paranal Maintenance Strategy and which have been the motivations to implement the established strategy.
