The new fast Radon transform (NFRT) algorithm proposed by the authors is applied here to reconstruct the X-ray CT image. Satisfactory agreement between the original and reconstructed images was obtained. The algorithm does not require computation intensive data interpolation and convert directly between a raster scan grid and the rectangular/polar grid in one step as compared to the back-projection method. Most importantly the compatibility of this algorithm for the X-ray CT system is also verified here.

In this paper we present the design of FolkMusic, a mobile peer-to-peer entertainment system. The work reported in this paper builds on the current trends towards: 1) edutainment software, 2) increase in use of peer-to-peer technologies, and, 3) the current trend towards mobile computing solutions. Further on, the research reported in this paper builds on prior research on "folk computing" for which mobile ad-hoc peer-to-peer solutions are a focal concern. Overall, this paper contributes to research on MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) and peer-to-peer (P2P) computing by illustrating how mobile peer-to-peer technologies can be applied to both the area of entertainment as well as for educational purposes. Further on, the FolkMusic system contributes to current technical efforts made on ad-hoc networks by providing a good example of how Internet technologies and similar stationary and stable infrastructures can be combined with highly dynamic and wireless networks.

Based on both experimental observations and available numerical methods, an innovative 2D approach for determining droplet size during the atomization process has been developed. Based on experimental evidences (see [1] and [2]) atomization of turbulent high speed jets is assumed to occur in a two stage process: ligaments detachment and droplets formation. The simulation method here proposed wants to take the advantages typical of the two most effective methods in spray investigation. It joins LES (i.e Large Eddy Simulations) approach and Linear Stability Analysis: the first one is used to solve the liquid-air fluid dynamics interaction and in particular the instabilities leading to ligament formation. The second one is finally adopted to compute the droplet size spectrum from ligament break-up. Therefore dynamics of ligament formation is directly computed while droplet formation is modelled by using a Linear Stability Analysis. The numerical simulation adopts a VOF (i.e. Volume of Fluid) method to track liquid-gas interface. Turbulence effects on liquid surface are accounted for by adding a turbulent flow field at the nozzle exit which represents a part of the boundary condition of the computational domain. A physical criterion is then applied to detach ligaments from liquid jet surface which will reduce in diameter during simulation. The droplet formation is then computed by applying the linear stability analysis to the ligaments, assumed being circular and subject to circulation. An extensive validation and sensitivity analysis has been carried out in order to assess method advantages and limits. The experimental results of Wu et al. [3] and Hiroyasu et al. [4] were used as test cases. A sensitivity analysis has been performed under typical HSDI Diesel engine injection conditions. The method proved to exhibit promising attitude in the reconstruction of the droplet size spectrum depending on injection parameter or conditions.

Quality of service (QoS) management has become an important requirement for middleware platforms and distributed applications. Early QoS engineering attempts focused on single-category extensions to standard middleware. In recent years generic middleware frameworks have been proposed in order to facilitate multicategory QoS management. Our experience with such a framework has revealed that QoS management cannot be shielded from the applications. Applications need to be designed in a QoS-aware manner and application QoS requirements need to be translated into appropriate middleware extensions. Therefore we propose a comprehensive, model-driven development process for QoS-enabled distributed applications on top of QoS-enhanced middleware platforms. Our approach builds on OMG's Model-Driven Architecture (MDA). We demonstrate the mapping from the platform-independent to the platform-specific model, and we show how the design approach is applied targeting a .NET-based QoS-enabled middleware.

During the last four years of operations, low technical downtime has been one of the relevant records of the Paranal Observatory. From the beginning of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) project, European Southern Observatory (ESO) has considered the implementation of a proper maintenance strategy a fundamental point in order to ensure low technical down time and preserve the Observatory's assets. The implementation of the maintenance strategy was based on the following aspects: Strong maintenance sense during the design stage. Line Replacement Unit (LRU) concept, standardization and modularity of the Observatory eququipment Creation of a dedicated team for Maintenance. The implementation of a Computerized Maintenance Management System. After four operational years, the result of these aspects has exceeded the expectations;the Observatory has been operating with high availability under a sustainable strategy. The strengths of the maintenance strategy have been based on modern maintenance concepts applied by regular production companies, where any minute of down time involves high cost. The operation of the actual Paranal Maintenance System is based mainly on proactive activities, such as regular inspections, preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) plans. Nevertheless, it has been necessary to implement a strong plan for corrective maintenance (CM). The Spare Parts Strategy has also been an important point linked to the Maintenance Strategy and CMMS implementation. At present, almost 4,000 items related to the Observatory spare parts are loaded into the CMMS database. Currently, we are studying the implementation of a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) project in one of our critical systems. The following document presents the actual status of the Paranal Maintenance Strategy and which have been the motivations to implement the established strategy.

This work presents a new computation method which has been recently introduced, that is capable of extracting the multi-dimensional scattering matrix of even very large-scale, multiport microwave systems, by simulating measurements performed with a multiport, vector network analyzer (VANA) system. The new method may be applied by using any appropriate frequency-domain, 2D or 3D Maxwell-field solver, provided the solver used computes complex field-values everywhere within a given bounded domain. The new computation method, simulates the functions performed by a multiport, vector network analyzer (VANA) system, by computing the real and imaginary components of the complex electromagnetic field, within the internal regions of a set of virtual measurement-lines. Each line is assumed to be connected to one of the ports of the large-scale, multiport microwave system that is to be characterized.

The modified finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, generalized total-field/scattered-field (G-TF/SF) FDTD is applied to compute the response of an interconnect illuminated by an external electromagnetic field. This method is also extended from 2D to 3D. The current distributions on the strips are presented and in good agreement with the data computed via the moment methods. The simulation result indicates that this method is fast and accurate for the infinite scatterer problem. The method to be fully developed is intended to model and simulate the problem of electromagnetic susceptibility with an external excitation source. The paper presents the algorithm development and the preliminary results generated.

Arithmetic coding achieves a superior coding rate when encoding a binary source, but its lack of speed makes it an inferior choice when true high-performance encoding is needed. This paper presents the practical implementation of fast entropy coders for binary messages utilizing only bit shifts and table lookups. To limit code table size the proposed code lengths is limited with a type of variable-to-variable (VV) length code created from source string merging. This is referred to as "merged codes". With merged codes it is possible to achieve a desired level of speed by adjusting the number of bits read from the source at each step. The most efficient merged codes yield a coder with a worst-case inefficiency of 0.4%, relative to the Shannon entropy. Using a hybrid Golomb-VV bin coder the compression ratio that is competitive with other state-of-the-art coders, at a superior throughput is achieved.
