Complex systems are those systems composed of many, often very simple, interacting autonomous entities. Interactions between these entities give rise to behaviour and patterns at the global level that cannot be predicted by examining the behaviour of any single individual component in the system. By this definition, pervasive computing environments are complex systems. This paper develops the idea that complex systems theory can aid the design of service discovery, and that results from the field of complex networks research can be applied to service discovery protocols to improve their scalability and robustness. We describe the influences of complex systems theory on the design of an existing service discovery protocol for pervasive computing environments, and show that the application of complex systems ideas can improve scalability, performance and robustness of service discovery protocols.

Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) visit various Healthcare providers during the course of their disease. It was suggested that IT might help to orchestrate their care provision. We have applied the USE IT-tool to get insight in the relevant problems, solutions and constraints of the MS-care and the MS care providers both in the organizational and the information technological area. There is hardly a chain of healthcare, but rather, a network in which informal communication plays an important role. This informal network worked reasonably effective, but inefficient and slow. The patient himself plays a key-role in information exchange between care-providers. Many providers were unaware of the services that other healthcare providers could give in general or did provide to a specific patient. MS patients-count is only small for most care providers. None of the interviewed patients mentioned a lack of contacts between care-providers as a problem. They thought that lack of experience caused their major problems: insufficient and inadequate care. To improve care, we proposed a solution that combines a "short MS-protocol", the introduction of a central coordinator of care and a Patient Relation Management (PRM) System. This is a simple web-based application that is based on agreement by the caregivers that supports routing, tracking and tracing of a MS patient and supplies the caregivers with professional guidelines, as written down in the protocol. It is likely that we would have suggested a far more complicated ICT solution if we had only analyzed the MS-care process as such, without specific consideration of the USE IT dimensions.

Network Centric Information Infrastructure (NCII) is a toolkit of prefabricated software components together with a composition framework for integration and experimentation. Typical distributed system applications of a toolkit such as NCH can be applied to air traffic management, shop floor control and in-flight connection to Internet. The composition framework has gone though through three generations of changes in the past five years and it is a good illustration of a paradigm shift from object-oriented architecture, through component-based architecture to service-based architecture.

The Fast Multipole Method(FMM) and Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm(MLFMA) are successfully developed to solve electrically very large size of perfectly electric conducting objects(PEC).Using the impedance boundary conditions(IBC), the integral equations(IEs) can be simplified and solved for wave problems involving imperfectly conducting ***,the algorithm is firstly implemented and verified by comparing with the exact analytical solution for a PEC sphere,and then extended for imperfectly conducting(thin material coating) objects and verified with the analytical ***,it has been applied to an aircraft model with the PEC and material coating surface and compared the results.

The grid technology is the third network current after the traditional Internet and WWW, and could be specified as the third generation of network application. The main topic of the grid technology is to integrate all the resources in the network that include the computing capacity, the storage system, the communication system, software, information, and knowledge. In another word, the grid structure is a huge sharing platform that integrates all kinds of resources from Internet. National Center for High-performance computing, Taiwan, is the main computing center taking charge of the integration and application of high-performance computing and networking in Taiwan. The grid technology is applied in this article to integrate techniques of network, database, hydrology, fluid mechanics, and related applications. Experts are called together to join the project. The main goal in this study is to build a networked, Web-based, and distributed flood forecast system with the integration of computation grid. Users could access this system simultaneously through Web browser. A plurality of flood forecast projects could be as well managed at the same time. Results of the flood forecast projects would be provided to the Central Disaster Emergency Center and local government units to help process the flood forecast and the exigent disaster-reducing assignments through Internet.

It is common in object recognition algorithms based on viewpoint consistency to find object poses that align many of the object features with features extracted from a search image. Algorithms usually treat these features as having no information other than location. However, in many applications, the features are much more distinctive than this. This distinctiveness can be used to improve recognition with respect to both the search time and the reliability of the recognition. We modify an efficient clustering method for detecting objects using geometry to incorporate short trees that help prune many of the possible matches between object features and image features prior to the more expensive clustering step. The methodology is applied to a problem of computing a spacecraft position with respect to a celestial body by recognizing the configuration of craters visible on the surface.

In this paper, a spread spectrum based watermarking using partial embedding and reduced dynamic range detection is proposed for uncompressed video in spatial domain. Conceptually, by properly reducing the variance of host media, lower bit error rate and smaller chip-rate can be obtained. A technique of variance reduction is therefore applied by decreasing a dynamic range of the host signal. Moreover, when using the proposed technique in which some pixels having particular values are considered and modified, higher quality of the watermarked media in term of PSNR is obtained. The results show that without knowledge of original media, the embedded watermark can be recovered with a smaller chip-rate, compared to the traditional spread spectrum based methods. The improved performance can still be achieved even if various strengths of attack, i.e. addition of Gaussian distributed noise, are applied.

We present algorithms for detection of oil spills in Radarsat and ENVISAT SAR images. The algorithms are trained on 60-100 images from each sensor from European water (mainly the North Sea and the Baltic Sea). Results show that they perform very well when applied to benchmark data sets, but in some cases additional information is needed to discriminate between oil slicks and algae, particularly in the Baltic Sea

Testing constraints for real-time systems are usually verified through the satisfiability of propositional formulae. In this paper, we propose an alternative where the verification of timing constraints can be done by counting the number of truth assignments instead of Boolean satisfiability. This number can also tell us how "far away" a given specification is from satisfying its safety assertion. Furthermore, specifications and safety assertions are often modified in an incremental fashion, where problematic bugs are fixed one at a time. To support this development, we propose an incremental algorithm for counting satisfiability. Our proposed incremental algorithm is optimal as no unnecessary nodes are created during each counting. This works for the class of expressions, known as path RTL ([F. Jahanian et al. (1987), F. Wang et al. (1994)]). To illustrate this application, we show how incremental satisfiability counting can be applied to a well-known rail-road crossing example, particularly when its specification is still being refined.
