In This work we propose a new distributed intrusion detection system (IDS) designed for mobile ad hoc network (MANET) environments. The complete distribution of the intrusion detection process is the salient feature of our proposition: distribution is not restricted to data collection but also applied to execution of the detection algorithm and alert correlation. Each node in the MANET runs a local IDS (LIDS) that cooperates with others LIDS. A mobile agent framework is used to preserve the autonomy of each LIDS while providing a flexible technique for exploring the natural redundancies in MANET to compensate for the dynamic state of wireless links between high mobility nodes. The proposed solution has been validated by actual implementation, which is described in the paper. Three attacks are presented as illustrative examples of the IDS mechanisms. Attack detection is formally described by specification of data collection, attack signatures associated with such data and alerts generation and correlation. Experiments exhibit fairly good results, the attacks being collaboratively detected in real-time.

Summary form only given. Currently, clusters of PCs are considered a cost-effective alternative to large parallel computers. As the number of elements increases in these systems, the probability of faults increases dramatically. Therefore, it is critical to keep the system running even in the presence of faults. The interconnection network plays a key role in its performance. InfiniBand (IBA) is a new standard interconnect suitable for clusters. Most of the fault-tolerant routing strategies proposed for massively parallel computers cannot be applied to IBA because routing and virtual channel transitions are deterministic, which prevents packets from avoiding the faults. A possible approach to provide fault-tolerance in IBA consists of using several disjoint paths between every source-destination pair of nodes and selecting the appropriate path at the source host. However, to this end, a routing algorithm able to provide enough disjoint paths, while still guaranteeing deadlock freedom, is required. We propose a simple and effective fault-tolerant methodology for IBA networks that can be applied to any network topology and meets the trade-off between fault-tolerance degree and the number of network resources devoted to it. Preliminary results show that the proposed methodology scales well and supports up to three faults in 2D and five in 3D tori using only two virtual channels.

A multi-strip numerical method, combining solution of the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a finite-element structural dynamics response, has been developed to analyze the flow-structure interaction of long, flexible risers. This solution methodology combines a number of individual hydrodynamic simulations corresponding to individual axial strips along the riser section with a full 3D structural analysis to predict overall VIV loads and displacements. The hydrodynamic loading for each riser strip is derived from a 2D finite-volume discretization of the governing RANS equations which is applicable to both single and multiple riser configurations. The entire flow-structure solution procedure is carried out in the time domain via a loose coupling strategy, such that the hydrodynamic loads from each riser strip are summed to obtain the overall loading along the span of each riser. This loading is then used to integrate forward a single time-step in the riser equations of motion to obtain an updated riser displacement profile. Closure of the coupled flow-structure method is achieved by updating the riser displacements for each of the corresponding hydrodynamic strips in the next time-step integration. The developed multi-strip method is applied to a single bare riser subjected to both uniform and shear current profiles. The flow conditions and riser configuration were chosen to match the Marintek rotating rig experiments, and comparisons between experimental and numerical results are presented for several flow configurations and axial tensions. In addition, a parametric study is presented using 16, 32, and 64 hydrodynamic strips for a given flow configuration to ascertain the sensitivity of the results to the number of strips chosen.

The current work proposes a parallel implementation for interactive molecular dynamics simulations (MD). The interactive capability is modeled by finite automata that are executed in the processing nodes. Any interaction implies in a communication between the user interface and the finite automata. The ADKS, an interactive sequential MD code that provides graphical output was chosen as a case study. A parallel version of this code was developed using the MPI communication library to check its parallel performance without/with visualization. Performance results are discussed for both cases and the influence of visualization in the performance is also treated, including image update rate. In order to allow a modular approach, a new parallel version of the ADKS is being implemented employing the PyMPI Python extension.

This paper presents a powerful variant of the ICP (iterative closest point) algorithm for registering range images using a probability field. The probability field (p-field) represents the probability distribution of the surface position. By capitalizing on the properties of the range image, fast construction, compact representation, and efficient query of the p-field can be achieved. Different sensor models are supported by the p-field according to the properties of the range image. Range images can be precisely aligned by maximizing the probability of overlapping surfaces via the p-field

This paper describes the processes involved in developing and implementing the Doctor of computing (DComp) programme at UNITEC Institute of Technology. It is the first professional doctorate in computing to be offered in New Zealand and required a rigorous and prolonged approval and accreditation process, involving a panel of eight people set up by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The UNITEC development team began (in May 2001) by examining various models for professional doctorates from Australia, England and New Zealand and agreeing on a generic structure that met NZQA requirements and could be applied to a range of academic disciplines. Generic regulations and course outlines were drafted by the team and approved by the UNITEC Academic Board and a 150 page document was sent to NZQA after 12 months of development and refinement. The approval and accreditation process took another seven months and the programme commenced in February 2003. The paper concludes by describing the experience of offering the first of three courses and reflecting on the challenges and rewards of facilitating learning at the highest level of NZQA's "framework".

In view of defects of tradition chips used for conference systems, such as poor performance and higher prices, this paper proposes the technical solution to use DSP technology to design and realize the multi-party conference system, and describes detailed designs and specified realization methods. With stable performance and requiring much lower costs, the product is now being extensively applied in Chinese railway and military systems and achieving favorable economic and social benefits.

This paper presents the results relating to the development and application of evolutionary multi-objective optimisation algorithms to the design of alloy steels using crisp and logic based objective functions. The applied optimisation algorithm aims at determining the optimal heat treatment regime and the required weight percentages for the chemical composites to obtain the pre-defined mechanical properties of steel. During this process, the targeted mechanical properties and the reliability of their predictions are considered simultaneously.
