During recent years, the amount of variability that has to be supported by a software artefact is growing considerably and its management is evolving into a major challenge during development, usage, and evolution of software artefacts. Successful management of variability in software leads to better customizable software products that are in turn likely to result in higher market success. The aim of this paper is to present software variability management both from a 'problems' and from a 'solutions' perspective by discussing experiences from industrial practice and from applied research in academia. Issues that are addressed include, but are not limited to, technological, process, and organizational aspects as well as notation, assessment, design, and evolution aspects.

The convergence of 1:1 computing in education as a goal and wireless mobile technologies as a means to that goal has the potential to change one of the most basic of all learning communities: the secondary classroom. Here, the wireless network of mobile devices finds itself overlaid onto, and meshed with, the social network of rich verbal and nonverbal interactions among the students and their teacher. The author and a group of researchers at the Center for Learning and Teaching in the West (CLT-W) have developed a framework for analyzing teacher classroom discourse moves. The framework is being applied in a case study to identify patterns in the discursive interactions of the students and their teacher. An analysis of these patterns will lead to abstractions that refine the wireless network itself and render it a more useful partner to the social network in which it is deployed.

MAP estimation of Gaussian mixtures through maximisation of penalised likelihoods was used to learn models of spatial context. This enabled prior beliefs about the scale, orientation and elongation of semantic regions to be encoded, encouraging one-to-one correspondences between mixture components and these regions. In conjunction with minimum description length this enabled automatic learning of inactivity zones and entry zones from track data in a supportive home environment.

Summary form only given. Visual displaying techniques have existed for a rather long time. In this talk, we shall show how the visual display techniques can be used to help biological analyze data. Furthermore, we shall show that the multi-dimensional scaling technique is a very useful tool to rotate protein 3-dimensional structures so that comparisons can be easily made on them, In other words, the similarity between two protein structures can be quickly determined after the rotation is done by the multidimensional scaling technique. We shall also show that we have successfully applied a relaxation method to the RNA folding problem. Given the logical structure of an RNA sequence, we can use the relaxation method to find the RNA physical structure.

Distributed computing has been applied to a variety of computational problems. Several software systems have been developed that make distributed applications available to an application programmer. Although these systems provide functionality for the design, execution, monitoring and control of distributed applications, they are not Web-based. The increasing use of Web technology for Internet and Intranet applications is making the Web an attractive framework for solving distributed applications, in particular, because the interface can be made platform independent. We present a Web-based environment which provide remote management of distributed applications. The environment allows the user to configure, execute, monitor and dynamically reconfigure distributed components. In addition the tool tolerates node failures to ensure service availability, and can be tailored to different distributed application platforms. The proposed tool is developed without changing the front-end Web server and does not require manual software installation on the client side as long as a client Web browser is available.

Quantiles on response times, given by probability distribution functions, are a critical metric for quality of service in computer networks as well as many other logistical systems. We derive explicit expressions in the time domain for the sojourn (or response) time probability distribution in a modulated, batched G-queue. More precisely, this queue is Markovian with arrival streams of both positive (normal) and negative customers. Arrivals occur in batches of geometric size and service completions also release batches of geometric size, truncated at the current queue length. All the queue's parameters are modulated by an independent, stationary, continuous time Markov chain. This highly complex queue is able to model many characteristics observed in modern distributed computer systems and telecommunications traffic, such as burstiness, autocorrelation and failures. However, previously, sojourn time distributions have not been obtained even for an MMPP/M/1 queue. We simplify a previous result for their Laplace transform which we then show takes a rational form and can be inverted to give a mixture of exponential and Erlang distributions, possibly modified with sine-factors. An algorithm is described which generates these Junctions from any given model parameterization and is applied to a range of problems to illustrate graphically the potentially diverse density functions that ensue.

The evaluation and prediction of parallel program performance is becoming more and more important, so that it requires appropriate techniques to identify the factors which influence the application execution time and also the way they interact. In this paper, we present some contributions of our research in this area by describing PEMPIs: a new methodology applied to the analysis and prediction of MPI programs. A new task graph helps us both to understand details of the application and to increase the accuracy of the prediction models. The proposed techniques are detailed and tested through the modeling of a complete application. PEMPIs efficiency has been proved by the results of this application modeling - most tests executed in a cluster of workstations exhibited errors up to 10%.

An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based PSS is proposed in this paper. The controller is essentially divided into two sub-systems, a recursive least square identifier for the generator and an adaptive neuro fuzzy PSS to damp the oscillations. The PSS is coupled to a single machine in every area and the parameters of this PSS are tuned online in order to minimize a cost function. The cost function consists of a summation of terms, in which each term is made up of the square of the difference in speed between the machine to which the PSS is connected and another machine in that same area (the number of terms equal the number of machines in that area excluding the machine installed with a PSS). The PSS is trained to reduce the speed difference between machines in every area while helping to reduce inter area oscillations. The proposed technique is illustrated on a 2 area 4-machine 13 bus system. This ANFIS PSS showed satisfactory performance under severe faulting conditions, where a three-phase fault applied to a line, was cleared after a extended period of time. The conventional PSS and the ANFIS using the original cost function (consisting of just the square of the speed difference of the generator installed with the PSS) failed to perform under such conditions.

Feature extraction of SAR data based on eigenvector of texture samples tries to find the principle components of the distribution of training sets. These eigenvectors can be considered as a set of features, which together characterize the variations between training samples for each class. Defining covariance matrix is also an important issue to achieve significant classification accuracy. In this study, classification is performed based on eigenvector of textures and gray level cooccurrence matrix. Both statistical based decision rules and neural networks are applied as a classifier to test the performance of the feature extraction method based on eigenvector of texture samples and cooccurrence matrix.

Well structured higher order neurons have shown improved computational power and generalization ability. However, these models are difficult to train because of a combinatorial explosion of higher order terms as the number of inputs to the neuron increases. We present a neural network using a new neuron architecture called the generalized mean neuron (GMN) model. This neuron model consists of an aggregation function which is based on the generalized mean of all the inputs applied to it. The resulting neuron model has the same number of parameters with improved computational power as the existing multilayer perceptron (MLP) model. The capability of this model has been tested on the classification and time series prediction problems.
