In this paper we present a technique for the modelling and animation of cartoon hair. In our approach the primary shape and motion of the hair is defined by an animated NURBS volume, along whose surface are generated clumps of hair geometry. The basis of these hair clumps is formed by key hair curves that are grown along the isocurves of the originating surface and which follow its motion. Particle dynamics are applied to each key hair and blended with initial animation using springs. Profile curves are then extruded along the length of the hey hairs to create the geometry details of the hairdo. The finished animated hairdo is rendered nonphotorealistically in cartoon style shading

A virtual colony composed by vivid personal characters with different facial texture and body size, will strongly enhance the reality of the whole virtual environment. This paper describes a fast, economic but realistic method for modeling virtual colony. The system has two major components: photographs based human model reconstruction and anthropometry based automatic human model edit, both of them were advanced to achieve more practical and realistic purpose. To demonstrate the power of this approach, the method was applied to generate some virtual colonies.

As SoC complexity grows new methodologies and tools for system design and time-effective ditsign space exploration are required. In this paper we introduce a tool called CASSE, what stands for Camellia system-on-chip simulation environment. CASSE is a fast, flexible, and modular SystemC-based simulation environment which aims to be useful for design-space exploration and system-level design at different abstraction levels. The tool uses transaction-level modeling techniques for fast simulations and easy architectural modeling, and bridge the gap to system implementation by a progressive refinement approach. CASSE is being used in the European 1ST-2001-34410 CAMELLIA project, which focuses on the mapping of innovative smart imaging applications onto an existing video encoding architecture.

Using the well-known Lebesgue number lemma in topology, this paper presents a generic necessary and sufficient condition on system performance of general dynamics with uncertain parameter distributed in intervals. The proposed result abstracts and generalizes the existing results in literature. Our approach can be applied for dealing with various performance analyses and more complex plants with interval parameters.

Timeoptimal quantum computing provides a dramatic speed‐up in realistic coupling networks of qubits, wherever the time‐limiting steps are coupling evolutions, while local controls are fast. Already in a chain of six spin qubits the timeoptimal quantum Fourier transform obtained by optimal control is some six times faster than the standard decomposition into controlled phase and Hadamard gates. Here, new results of quantum control are presented within their Lie‐theoretical framework sketched from the preconditions of controllability and reachability up to recent methods of gradient flows.

We present a hybrid, multilayered, agent-oriented architecture for distributed sensor networks. We propose an agent-based middleware that bridges the gap between the programmable application layer consisting of software agents and the physical layer consisting of extremely small, low power devices that combine programmable computing with sensing, tracking and wireless communication capabilities. The middleware supports mechanisms for communication, mobility, cooperative data mining, querying, tasking, self-organization and administration of the constituent sensor nodes to build higher-level, interoperable applications with software agents. We discuss two major middleware components, namely, CCL, a command and control language, and STACS, a programmable controller synthesizer. We explain how the controller can be used to configure the behavior of a node and CCL to command and control the nodes in a sensor network. We provide frameworks for communication and mobility. We suggest an agent model that integrates the software agents of the application with the hardware agents of the physical environment. We describe an integrated target tracking experiment, to demonstrate an implementation of this architecture. Finally, we conclude with an insight to our future challenges.

The Grid provides a new and unrivaled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. This panel paper presents the views of four researchers in the area of Distributed Simulation and the Grid. Together we try to identify the main research issues involved in applying Grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. Such challenges include not only technical challenges, but also political ones such as management methodology for the Grid and the development of standards. The benefits of the Grid to end-user simulation modelers also are discussed.

In this paper, we propose a framework to label soccer video shots with pre-defined visual keywords to bridge the semantic gap between low-level features and semantic understanding. Based on these visual keywords, further structure analysis and event detection are facilitated. In our system, a MPEG-1 soccer video stream is partitioned into shots, from which each P-Frame is converted into color-based and edge-based binary maps. Then, we detect the playing field and segment the regions of interest (ROIs) inside the playing field. Finally two support vector machine classifiers and some decision rules are applied to the properties of the ROIs such as size, position, texture ratio, etc., and the position of the playing field to label the video shot with visual keyword. We have applied the proposed method to 3495 soccer video shots and achieved 94.3% and 97.2% average precision and recall, respectively.

The full-wave mathematical modeling of rectangular volume camera excited by the system of parallel situated waveguides had been fulfilled and applied for electrodynamics computation and computer aid design. The excitation of rectangular camera was realized over the connectiofi slots, fulfilled in its wall. The model was built at approximation of adjusted electrical field at the connection slot. The modeling had been concluded to the field calculation for the rectangular parallelepiped with multi-layer dielectric loading and ideal electrical walls at all six borders, or electrical walls at four borders and periodical boundary conditions at both less borders

Region-based image retrieval has been an active research area. Texture is one of the important features to describe regions. In this paper, an efficient texture feature extraction algorithm for arbitrary-shaped regions is presented. With a proper initial padding used, the algorithm first extends an arbitrary-shaped region into a rectangular area onto which block transformation can be applied. Then a set of coefficients are selected, from which texture feature of the region can be extracted. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in texture feature extraction from arbitrary-shaped regions for image retrieval purposes. And it is shown that a proper initial padding is the key to the performance of the algorithm.
