In this paper, we present a recursive algorithm for piecewise polygonal approximation of a digital curves. The idea behind is to look for an optimal solution while approximating the given curve segment with a set of longest and minimum line segments such that the maximum squared error is less than the given threshold. The given curve is divided into pieces and parallel processing can be applied to each piece of curve thus making it computationally more efficient. Experimental results show that the proposed method has promising results.

This paper describes a novel application of Fourier descriptor techniques for the recognition of hand gesture trajectories. Appearance based coordinates of hand centroids and time steps are normalized to a fixed length by multirate techniques. Fourier techniques are applied to the data to produce frequency domain data that is scale and translation invariant. The results of inputting the complex harmonic data to a probabilistic neural network for gesture classification are discussed. An understanding of underlying structure of gesture trajectories can be gained from modeling them as an infinite set of ellipses at given orientations. The rotation of the ellipses is visualized in the time domain as 'elliptic corkscrews'.

Method of moments, MoM, and the genetic algorithms, GA, are developed to optimize the element spacing and the heights of Yagi fractal arrays. The MoM is used independently for the computation of the current distribution on the array elements, the gain, and impedance characteristics of the array, while the GA is applied to select the heights and the spacing of the elements of the antenna arrays at each iteration. As a result of this optimization a simple Yagi fractal array is obtained with a maximum gain and real part of the input impedance close to 50. Different shapes of Yagi fractal arrays are designed for maximum gain between 10-13 dB.

We describe a generalized approach to deriving a custom data layout in multiple memory banks for array-based computations, to facilitate high-bandwidth parallel memory accesses in modern architectures, where multiple memory banks can simultaneously feed one or more functional units. We do not use a fixed data layout, but rather select application-specific layouts according to access patterns in the code. A unique feature of this approach is its flexibility in the presence of code reordering transformations, such as the loop nest transformations commonly applied to array-based computations. We have implemented this algorithm in the DEFACTO system, a design environment for automatically mapping C programs to hardware implementations for FPGA-based systems. We present experimental results for five multimedia kernels that demonstrate the benefits of this approach. Our results show that custom data layout yields results as good as, or better than, naive or fixed cyclic layouts, and is significantly better for certain access patterns and in the presence of code reordering transformations. When used in conjunction with unrolling loops in a nest to expose instruction-level parallelism, we observe greater than a 75% reduction in the number of memory access cycles and speedups ranging from 3.96 to 46.7 for 8 memories, as compared to using a single memory with no unrolling.

The purpose of this study is to set up a learning environment which is based on the multiple intelligences (MI) theory applied to the Internet. We try to find out the best suitable design style Web title for the students. Students of this experiment are divided into two groups of learning environments, i.e. the multiple intelligences learning Web title and general learning Web title. The student's cognitive style and multiple intelligences are identified by the questionnaires. The ACS test and SPSS are needed as research tools, to analyze the data obtained respectively. After analyzed the all factors, we find out the MI Web-based learning has the very positive effect on overall students especially on: field-independent students, and who just only have the naturalist or not only have one more intelligences simultaneously shown better achievements in the MI learning environment.

The curvature scale space (CSS) technique is one of the key techniques of the MPEG-7 international standard in computer vision and image processing. It was selected as a contour shape descriptor for MPEG-7 after substantial and comprehensive testing. However, to compute a CSS image in general needs to wait a long time. This is very disadvantageous when the CSS technique is applied to an object recognition system to perform real-time recognition. In order to solve this bottleneck problem, a hybrid method for fast computing the CSS image is proposed. In the method, firstly the curve is evolved in low scale space, and after image noise is suppressed then the curvature is evolved directly. Numerical experiments show that the hybrid method can perform equally well as the existing method. It is suitable for recognizing a noisy curve of arbitrary shape at any scale or orientation. On the other hand, the hybrid method only requires 1/3 /spl sim/ 1/5 CPU time of the existing one. As a result, the CSS technique is improved significantly for real-time recognition.

In this paper, an algorithm - the quantum evolutionary algorithm (QEA) is introduced. It is characterized by a representation of quantum chromosomes, quantum mutation and quantum crossover. Its advantages lies on better diversity of individuals, effective guidance of mutation and the avoidance of prematurity by crossover. Some simulations are given to illustrate its efficiency and better performance than its counterpart. Finally, we applied it to the multi-user detection in DS-CDMA, and good results are attained.

In the context of support vector machines, feature selection is motivated mainly by the consideration of classification speed and generalization ability. Sensitivity analysis of MLP and RBF has already been successfully applied in feature subset selection. We present a novel feature selection method for support vector machines (SVMs) using the sensitivity analysis of SVMs, which is defined as the deviation of separation margin with respect to the perturbation of given feature. The method we proposed can directly be applied to multi-class SVMs. Our experiments validate that the proposed strategy produces satisfactory results both on artificial and real-world data.

A method based on integral equation (IE) coupled with physical optics (PO) method is proposed for the analysis of antennas in the presence of a large three-dimensional (3D) dielectric radome. The electric field integral equation (EFIE) is applied to the conducting surfaces of the antenna array enclosed within a large 3D radome. Equivalent PO surface currents aree assumed on the radome walls induced by the near field radiation of the antenna. The PO currents are coupled back into the integral equation to account for the effects of the radome on the antenna. The resultant current distribution on the antenna obtained by this coupled IE-PO method is useful for computation of the antenna's input impedance and radiation patterns with the effect of radome. As the PO method is applied to the large radome, no additional unknowns are needed, besides those defined on the surface of the antenna, leading to a substantial reduction in computational resources required. Numerical simulation showing the accuracy and efficiency of the coupled IE-PO method is presented.
