The aim of this work is to develop a very precise approach for monitoring the changing spectral snow bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and fractional snow cover area (FSCA). Intended use is from local monitoring at the basin level to global monitoring. The concept assumes a day-to-day monitoring of the snow from winter conditions until all snow has melted. The developing reflectance spectrum of the snow is both observed by satellite sensors, giving samples of the BRDF, and modeled by including an empirical snow metamorphosis model and a snow impurity model giving full BRDF. Snow grain size (SGS) and snow surface impurities (SSI) are measured by indices and used to parameterize the models. The predicted snow spectrum and the local bare ground spectrum are applied in a linear spectral unmixing algorithm to estimate the area fraction of snow (SCA) and bare ground. By using predicted spectra for the current situation and not a pool of all possible spectra, the result will in general be more accurate and reliable. The area fractions and the predicted albedos of snow and bare ground are combined in order to predict the BRDF of the observed pixel

The Grab and Glue discrete event simulation (Grab-and-Glue) framework has been proposed for several years. This paper investigates the feasibility of this framework. A simulation model of a single server queuing system is constructed by following the Grab-and-Glue framework as a ubiquitous example. Different scissions are grabbed from the Web or programming textbooks, and glued together using JBuilder5. The potential of Grab-and-Glue is discussed as well as the current challenges of constructing Grab-and-Glue simulation models. Some critiques and recommendations for the ongoing research on constructing simulation models based on the Grab-and-Glue framework have also been proposed.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the method which can assess accurately and efficiently the effects of excitation systems on transient stability of power systems. At first, critical fault clearing time functions CCT(W:load) are defined by taking notice of the fact that transient stability is mainly controlled by fault clearing time and load. Next, the method to be enable to assess accurately and efficiently the effects of excitation systems on transient stability has been newly developed by using the above functions. Finally, it has been applied to the effect assessment in the occurrence of a three- phase fault in a model power system. Results of application have been clarified the effectiveness of the developed method.

The three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is applied to acoustics analysis in this paper. The disadvantages of its method are large memory requirement and long calculation time. We developed the 3D-FDTD method using parallel computing with the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) in the personal computer (PC) cluster because it could shorten the calculation time and could treat larger memory. In this paper, basic algorithm of the proposed method is described. The acoustic fields of point sources and the real aerial sensor are calculated for verifying the validity of the method.

This work provides a generalization of the traditional response surface methodology (RSM) that can be applied to complex, multiobjective simulation studies. These problems involve a larger number of input variables, multiple measures of performance, and complex systems relationships. This multiple RSM approach capitalizes on the underlying learning philosophy of the traditional RSM while benefiting from other knowledge discovery concepts and data mining techniques. Furthermore it does not require the restrictive assumptions of the traditional RSM nor does it restrict the analyst to the traditional RSM techniques. Based on a variation of (Brown and Schamburg 2004) and (Schamburg 2004), a brief description of the generalized approach is provided. Then, the multiple response techniques are shown through an example application.

Paper describes research done on algorithms for the generation of gouge-free nonisoparametric tool paths across surface plane segments obtained through triangulation partitioning. Along with contiguous trajectory sequences, adaptive tool path planning introduces partially discontinuous tool trajectories. Algorithm achieves the necessary trajectory continuity by the insertion of the auxiliary tool-orientation trajectories. The tool passes over the path gaps are accomplished through rapid tool traverses. The evaluation of surface machining optimization is provided by simulation of computed tool motion trajectories applied to triangulation models. Tool tracks and tool trajectories obtained with different surface models are used for presentation and examination of the optimized tool path modeling and algorithm computing performance issues.

Continued scaling of silicon process technologies beyond the 90nm node will face problems due to within die process variations. The increasing relative magnitude of within die process variations will cause power-frequency distributions to widen, thus reducing manufacturing yields. Mitigating the effects of these process variations can be done by using a system of locally-generated body biases. This system allows for highly localized circuit optimizations with very little overhead in silicon area and routing resources. We present two algorithms to find near-optimal configurations of these biases which can be applied during post-fabrication testing. The system can improve an initial yield of 12% to 73%.

Health and usage management systems (HUMS) compute a number of condition indicators (CIs) from physical measurements, such as vibration. These CIs are used to characterize the health of the component. When the CI exceeds some threshold, the component is deemed to be in warning (perform additional analysis) or alarm (component is faulted and requires maintenance). This work presents an approach for the robust configuration of thresholds to control false alarm while maintaining reliable detection. Results are presented for this methodology applied to the CIs monitoring a typical helicopter drive train.

Efficient global illumination computation in dynamically changing environments is an important practical problem. In high-quality animation rendering costly "final gathering" technique is commonly used. We extend this technique into temporal domain by exploiting coherence between the subsequent frames. For this purpose we store previously computed incoming radiance samples and refresh them evenly in space and time using some aging criteria. The approach is based upon a two-pass photon mapping algorithm with irradiance cache, but it can be applied also in other gathering methods. The algorithm significantly reduces the cost of expensive indirect lighting computation and suppresses temporal aliasing with respect to the state of the art frame-by-frame rendering techniques

The ability to measure, monitor and control the service quality experienced by network traffic is becoming increasingly important as multiple traffic types are aggregated onto IP networks. Assessing the real-time performance of the application flows is an essential requirement for network operations and service management, as well as for identifying how the different traffic types and transports interact and behave, when they are carried over the end-to-end Internet infrastructure. This paper introduces a novel measurement technique for assessing the performance of IPv6 network flows. By exploiting IPv6 extension headers, measurement triggers and the instantaneous measurement indications are carried in the same packets as the payload data itself, providing a high level of probability that the behaviour of the real user traffic flows is being observed. The measurement mechanism is applied at the network layer and provides for a generic technique able to measure any type of traffic, without depending on particular transports nor on specific measurement architectures. A prototype implementation of this technique is also described and evaluated by measuring performance properties of application flows, over different-capacity IPv6 environments. End-to-end delay and jitter of video streams have been measured, as well as the goodput for services operating on top of reliable transport. This measurement technique can be the basis for low-overhead, scalable, transparent and reliable measurement of individual and aggregate network flows, and can be dynamically deployed where and when required in a multi-service IP environment.
