It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Eighth International Conference on Information and Communications Security (ICICS 2006), held in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, December 4–7, 2006. The ICICS conference series is an established forum that brings together researchersand scholars involved in m- tiple disciplines of Information and Communications Security in order to foster exchangeof ideas. The past sevenICICS conferences wereheld in Beijing, China (ICICS 1997); Sydney, Australia (ICICS 1999); Xi’an China (ICICS 2001); S- gapore (ICICS 2002); Hohhot City, China (ICICS 2003); Malaga, Spain (ICICS 2004); and Beijing, China (ICICS 2005). The conference proceedings of the past seven events have been published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, in LNCS1334,LNCS1726,LNCS2229,LNCS 2513,LNCS 2836, LNCS 3269, and LNCS 3783, respectively. This year we received a total of 119 submissions on various aspects of - hoc and sensor network security. The Program Committee selected 22 regular papers and 17 short papers that cover a variety of topics, including security protocols, applied cryptography and cryptanalysis, access control in distributed systems, privacy, malicious code, network and systems security, and security implementations. Putting together ICICS 2006 was a team e?ort. First of all, we would like to thank the authors of every paper, whether accepted or not, for submitting their papers to ICICS 2006. We would like to express our gratitude to the Program Committee members and the external reviewers, who worked very hard in - viewing the papers and providing suggestions for their improvements.

This paper presents a power-aware IP core generator for the 1D DFT design. We optimize the proposed DFT IP design both in algorithm and architecture levels for achieving low hardware complexity. In algorithm level, we first use radix-2/sup c/ algorithm to split a length-N DFT into multiple length-N/2/sup c/ DFTs for facilitating computation sharing between parallel DFT outputs. Then, we formulate the length-N/2/sup c/ DFT into cyclic convolution form to facilitate the hardware cost reduction. In architecture level, we implement the design with a filter-based architecture optimized by a bit-level sub-expression sharing. In addition, we have applied the power-aware design concept in the proposed IP core generator through trading off the power consumption, data precision, and hardware cost in the design phase by parameter configurations through graphic user interface.

Security of an agent system is often limited, relying on basic cryptographic techniques without consideration of issues such as key maintenance, forming and communicating in secure groups, or interlayer security. From a security engineering perspective, multi-agent systems introduce new channels and possibly layers, resulting in additional security concerns. A comprehensive security engineering perspective - studying the information flow of the multi-layered system, identifying, analyzing and addressing multi-level security threats - is rarely taken. This paper presents a security engineering process for multi-agent systems - motivating the need for comprehensive security engineering and showing how to proceed with the process within an agent system. One of the largest obstacles in security engineering is understanding how to decompose a system into the parts that require security. This paper provides a decomposition for agent systems that can be directly applied to the security engineering process. Examples are given that detail the application of the presented security engineering process to: 1) a FIPA-compliant agent system; and 2) peer-to-peer content lookup. The most important contribution of this paper, is proposing a formal approach to addressing security within an agent system, where there exist unique and application-specific threats that must be addressed.

Enhanced and interactive visualization techniques are the key issues in improving the ability of users to comprehend and work with the large data sets. Various techniques have been used in the past incorporating different media and are applied to a wide range of application domains. In particular, 3D data representation often provides a more enhanced and intuitive user approach than the two dimensional approach. In this paper, we discuss several data visualization techniques with an emphasis on hierarchical data structures. We present a case study involving the implementation of a Web based application enabling the 3D visual access to grid network monitoring data. Geographically distributed computing nodes are arranged into "farms", which further contains a number of the organizationally distributed "clusters". The implemented visualization incorporates a geographical presentation of farms on a 3D model of the Earth and compares two tree-based techniques for the visualization of hierarchically organized clusters and nodes. We discuss the technology used to implement such an application and the achieved user benefits in terms of an enhanced display.

To reduce the low-power allpole active-RC filter's output magnitude sensitivity to passive components, the "impedance tapering" design method was used. This design procedure has been applied to the design of 2nd- and 3rd-order low-pass (LP) (class 4) Sallen-and-Key filters and has already been published in G. S. Moschytz (1999). In this paper the active sensitivity analysis using Mathematica was performed on the same "impedance tapered" filter sections. The analysis was performed by calculation of the real filter's transfer-function magnitude which was denormalized to various cut-off frequencies from low to high, using a single-pole model of a real operational amplifier. The amount of active and passive sensitivity reduction was compared using the same degree of impedance tapering. It was demonstrated that both sensitivities, i.e. active and passive, were corresponding reduced for the same filter. Thus, a judicious selection of component values accounts for a considerable decrease in both passive and active sensitivities.

As the user's need to take a mobile service while roaming around increases, many solutions are needed to figure out the user's current location and service information and prepare subscribed mobile service without user's intervention. We propose a mobile service provision system, which is based on sensor and SIP-specific event notification mechanism. In this system, dynamically subscribed service terminal is selected and used to provide mobile service to a roaming user by a sensor-equipped user agent which is also interworking with 3GPP IMS for getting extended user profile stored in HSS. And this user profile, capability report and command script which are used in our system are all XML-based documents, so these can also be easily modified and applied to any other services.

Nonlinear Discrete-Time Algorithm for Fractional Derivatives Computation with Application to PI λ D μ Controller Implementation

This paper presents a novel algorithm for the numerical computation of fractional-order derivatives, based on a suitable generalization of a sliding-mode based robust and exact first-order differentiator (see Levant (1998)). The method inherits the robustness properties against the measurement noise of the original scheme. The algorithm is first devised in the continuous time setting, leading to a block scheme where conventional and fractional order integrators are suitably combined in a closed loop configuration containing certain “stabilizing” static non-linearities as well. All integrators are discretized by an algorithm of the Adams-Bashforth-Moulton type (cfr. Diethelm et al, (2004)) yielding an overall discrete time form of the proposed fractional differentiator. The algorithm is then applied to derive a discretized implementation formula for the PI λ D μ controller. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm and to compare it with other existing approaches.

The paper summarises the outcomes from a study into developing a coherent roadmapping strategy for eTraining and eLearning technologies in Europe. The presented roadmap defines the priority areas for future research, with a view to respond to needs of the emerging European Professional eTraining. It is based on the results from a gap analysis performed on the state of the art in R&D versus the desired futures reflecting the future market needs.

Understanding the phases and styles of evolution of software systems can provide valuable insight in support of project management. We present a method for studying the evolution of object-oriented software at system/subsystem level and analyzing the underlying factors that drive its unfolding over time. This method relies on analyzing the design-level structural changes between two subsequent software versions to identify additions, removals, moves, renamings and signature-changes of classes, interfaces, and their methods and fields, represented as change trees. A sequence of such change trees constitutes the system's evolution profile. Based on discrete system evolution profiles, three types of analyses: phasic analysis, gamma analysis, and optimal matching analysis, are applied, to abstract an overall sequential pattern and structural properties of system evolution phases and to develop the typology of system evolution styles. We report on two case studies evaluating our approach.

Deception problems are among the hardest problems to solve using ordinary genetic algorithms. Recent studies show that Bayesian optimization can help in solving these problems. This work compares the results acquired from the multiobjective fast messy genetic algorithm (MOMGA-II), multiobjective Bayesian optimization algorithm (mBOA), and the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) when applied to three different deception problems. The three deceptive problems studies are: interleaved minimal deceptive problem, interleaved 5-bit trap function, and the interleaved 6-bit bipolar function. The unmodified MOMGA-II, by design, explicitly learns building block linkages which is required if an algorithm is to solve these hard deception problems. Preliminary results using the MOMGA-II are favorable.
