Inclusion of intelligence in computer-based learning and teaching systems, along with the employment of Internet and World Wide Web, has led to the development of Web-oriented educational systems like Web based authoring shells. In order to redesign a shell's interface, usability evaluation, as a distinct validation process, is required. The methodology applied for the evaluation of a Web-based authoring shell's page design concepts, along with the achieved results, is elaborated in this paper.

Nighttime light (NTL) remote sensing offers an efficient method to estimate electric power consumption (EPC). However, few research applied the estimation model of a certain year to other years' data for validation, and its transferability across years has not been investigated. Taking mainland China as an example, this paper aims to develop an EPC estimation model which is transferable across years. Partial least square regression (PLSR) was used to build the estimation model for EPC with entire DN series of NTL. Then, the model of each single year 2004-2013 was applied to the other years to validate its transferability across years. Results revealed that PLSR performed well both in model calibration (mean R 2 c=0.89) and model transfer (mean R 2 p=0.87). We concluded that PLSR models could effectively excavated reliable quantitative relationship between NTL and EPC, and held good transferability across years.

We describe a novel algorithm for altering global statistics of magnetic resonance images (MRI) to fit a model distribution while preserving local feature contrast. Our algorithm estimates a multiplicative correction field that alters the intensity statistics of an image or set of images to best match those of a model. This is achieved by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the observed and desired intensity distributions. This procedure is effective for the discovery and removal of undesirable intra-individual and inter-individual signal intensity changes caused by developmental processes, disease processes or MR scanner intensity artifacts. Ultimately our goal is to improve the quality of segmentations obtained by classification of tissues on the basis of signal intensities by removing undesirable signal differences both within a subject, where tissue of the same composition may image differently in different parts of the acquisition volume, and between subjects in cases where both inter-subject and inter-acquisition variability are confounds. Validation experiments with synthetic data indicate the algorithm can successfully remove typical signal intensity inhomogeneities, and illustrative results demonstrate successful intensity normalization applied to a segmentation problem.

The sixth campaign of the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for European languages was held from January to September 2005. CLEF is by now an established international evaluation initiative and 74 groups from all over the world submitted results for one or more of the different evaluation tracks in 2005, compared with 54 groups in 2004. There were eight distinct evaluation tracks, designed to test the performance of a wide range of systems for multilingual information access. Full details regarding the design of the tracks, the methodologies used for evaluation, and the results obtained by the participants can be found in the different sections of these proceedings. As always the results of the campaign were reported and discussed at the annual workshop held in Vienna, Austria, September 21-23, immediately following the ninth European Conference on Digital Libraries. The workshop was attended by approximately 110 academic and industrial researchers and system developers. In addition to presentations by participants in the campaign, Noriko Kando from the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, gave an invited talk on the activities of the NTCIR evaluation initiative for Asian languages. Breakout sessions gave participants a chance to discuss ideas and results in detail. The final session was dedicated to proposals for activities for CLEF 2006. The presentations given at the workshop can be found on the CLEF Web site at: www. clef-campaign. org. We should like to thank the other members of the CLEF Steering Committee for their assistance in the coordination of this event.

An innovative technique, utilizing solely a GPS pseudorange receiver and an off-the-shelf CCD camera, is presented to simultaneously identify the aircraft attitude and the location of a ground target within the field of view of the camera. The integration of unscented Kalman filter(UKF) equation and the orientation representation using quaternion in the formulation of system dynamics and measurement process makes UKF outperform the conventional extended Kalman filter(EKF) processing in the following aspects: fast convergence, averaging operation instead of linearization, and plausibility in various industrial/military applications. Due to the inclusions of aforementioned two kinds of sensors, the cost of the entire system is dramatically reduced. No singular position is encountered owning to the introduction of quaternion algebra in rotation formulation. Simulations are conducted; both attitude estimation and ground target positioning errors are computed via UKF; and the beauty of fast convergence rate of UKF is witnessed.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are applied to cooperative working environments, but require more effective document sharing mechanisms, particularly, more efficient query processing. To achieve efficient query processing in the environment, we study a distributed indexing mechanism, normal direct indices (DIs), which are the key to reducing the number of queries and improving scalability over P2P networks. However, query processing with DIs cannot efficiently deal with an increase in the number of document categories because a DI holds the peer's information, not the document information. Therefore, we propose an improved DI, query-based DIs (QDIs). We assume that the peer is relevant to the query terms that the peer sends. This assumption allows each peer with correct QDIs to forward the query messages to their destination. To validate the QDIs, we show experimental results on query processing with and without DIs and show the improvement in network performance.

Model checking is a technique for the verification of temporal logic specifications in state-transition systems. It can be applied to software, at design stages as well as at source code level. The latter in particular is constricted by the large space requirements of model checking. However, model checking is a promising technique for the improvement of software quality. We examined the applicability of existing model checking methods and tools to software in general and with a focus on e-commerce software systems developed at Intershop. Although model checking is currently not applicable to all domains, it is useful for certain restricted fields of application. One of these domains are Intershop's e-commerce systems, consisting of so called pipelines. We show the source code related verification concept for these pipelines and is part of an overall concept for the verification and quality assurance of Intershop's products.

Due in part to the large volume of data available today, but more importantly to privacy concerns, data are often distributed across institutional, geographical and organizational boundaries rather than being stored in a centralized location. Data can be distributed by separating objects or attributes: in the homogeneous case, sites contain subsets of objects with all attributes, while in the heterogeneous case sites contain subsets of attributes for all objects. Ensemble approaches combine the results obtained from a number of classifiers to obtain a final classification. In this paper, we present a novel ensemble approach, in which data is partitioned by attributes. We show that this method can successfully be applied to a wide range of data and can even produce an increase in classification accuracy compared to a centralized technique. As an ensemble approach, our technique exchanges models or classification results instead of raw data, which makes it suitable for privacy preserving data mining. In addition, both final model size and runtime are typically reduced compared to a centralized model. The proposed technique is evaluated using a decision tree, a variety of datasets, and several voting schemes. This approach is suitable for physically distributed data as well as privacy preserving data mining.

General purpose graphics processors units (GPU) provide the potential for high computational performance with reduced cost and power. Typically they are employed in heterogeneous settings acting as accelerators. Here an application resides on a host multi-core, dispatching work to the GPU. However, workload dispatch is frequently accompanied by large scale data transfers between the host main memory and the dedicated memories of the GPUs. For many applications, memory allocation and communication overhead can severely reduce the benefits of GPU *** paper develops an approach that reduces host-device communication overhead for OpenCL applications. It does this without modification or recompilation of the application source code and is portable across platforms. It achieves this by tracing and analyzing calls to the runtime made by the application and then selecting the best platform specific memory allocation and communication policy. This approach was applied to 12 existing OpenCL benchmarks from Parboil and Rodinia suites on 3 different platforms where it gives on average a speedup of 1.51, 1.31 and 1.48, respectively. In certain cases, our approach leads up to a factor of three times improvement over current approaches.

A scalable parallel algorithm especially for large-scale three dimensional simulations with seriously non-uniform particles distributions is presented. In particular, based on cell-block data structures, this algorithm uses Hilbert space filling curve to convert three-dimensional domain decomposition for load distribution across processors into one-dimensional load balancing problems for which measurement-based multilevel averaging weights(MAW) method can be applied successfully. Against inverse space-filling partitioning(ISP), MAW redistributes blocks by monitoring change of total load in each processor. Numerical experimental results have shown that MAW is superior to ISP in rendering balanced load for large-scale multi-medium MD simulation in high temperature and high pressure physics. Excellent scalability was demonstrated, with a speedup larger than 200 with 240 processors of one MPP. The largest run with 1.1 × 109 particles on 500 processors took 80 seconds per time step.
