A scheduling scheme for ATM-like input-queued crossbar switching fabric in the IP router performs a critical role in the IP router. However, there is a problem among the existing scheduling schemes: when an IP router with a large number of outputs (e.g. 64, 128 or more) is connected to only a few nodes (e.g. 2 or 4 nodes, where the node may be another IP router or a switch), the switching capability is not fully utilized. We propose an approach to improve the existing scheduling schemes: all outputs of the switching fabric are divided into a few groups whose number is equal to the number of nodes to be connected, and outputs in the same group are multiplexed into a high-speed output link which is connected to a node. Therefore all outputs of the switching fabric can join the switching. The approach is applied to several popularly used scheduling algorithms. Simulation is carried out to demonstrate a better performance.

We study the compression of polynomially samplable sources. In particular, we give efficient prefix-free compression and decompression algorithms for three classes of such sources (whose support is a subset of {0, l}/sup n/). 1) We show how to compress sources X samplable by logspace machines to expected length H(X) + O(1). Our next results concern flat sources whose support is in P. 2) If H(X) /spl les/ k = n - O(log n), we show how to compress to length k + /spl delta//spl middot/ (n - k) for any constant /spl delta/ > 0; in quasi-polynomial time we show how to compress to length k + O(polylog log (n - k)) even if k = n -polylog(n). 3) If the support of X is the witness set for a self-reducible NP relation, then we show how to compress to expected length H(X) + 4.

An innovative technique, utilizing solely a GPS pseudorange receiver and an off-the-shelf CCD camera, is presented to simultaneously identify the aircraft attitude and the location of a ground target within the field of view of the camera. The integration of unscented Kalman filter(UKF) equation and the orientation representation using quaternion in the formulation of system dynamics and measurement process makes UKF outperform the conventional extended Kalman filter(EKF) processing in the following aspects: fast convergence, averaging operation instead of linearization, and plausibility in various industrial/military applications. Due to the inclusions of aforementioned two kinds of sensors, the cost of the entire system is dramatically reduced. No singular position is encountered owning to the introduction of quaternion algebra in rotation formulation. Simulations are conducted; both attitude estimation and ground target positioning errors are computed via UKF; and the beauty of fast convergence rate of UKF is witnessed.

Gait is a biometric feature and identification of people from gait captured on video that has become a challenging problem in computer vision. A recognition method based on amplitude spectrum (Fourier spectrum) of frequency domain is proposed. Fourier spectrum reflects the frequency feature of person's pose in the current frame. After getting the period and key poses through the whole sequence according to the height of centroid and the amplitude value in frequency domain, we extract 5D features from the sequence including four amplitude values corresponding to four key poses image and the proportion of body. Finally, three measures are applied to evaluate our algorithm. Experiments result on USF dataset show that our method is insensitive to many changes condition of background, lighting, clothing, walking speed, segment noise and so on. For we implement gait recognition according to the discriminant analysis, the result to some extent is robust to the variation of viewpoint and cloth and recognition rate is satisfying.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are applied to cooperative working environments, but require more effective document sharing mechanisms, particularly, more efficient query processing. To achieve efficient query processing in the environment, we study a distributed indexing mechanism, normal direct indices (DIs), which are the key to reducing the number of queries and improving scalability over P2P networks. However, query processing with DIs cannot efficiently deal with an increase in the number of document categories because a DI holds the peer's information, not the document information. Therefore, we propose an improved DI, query-based DIs (QDIs). We assume that the peer is relevant to the query terms that the peer sends. This assumption allows each peer with correct QDIs to forward the query messages to their destination. To validate the QDIs, we show experimental results on query processing with and without DIs and show the improvement in network performance.

We describe a recently developed DC motor position control experimental setup that can be accessed via the Internet. This setup consists of two primary elements communicating with each other: i) a server consisting of a low-cost microcontroller, Parallax's 40-pin Basic Stamp 2, interfaced with an embedded Ethernet IC, Cirrus Logic's Crystal CS8900A, and ii) a client computer. The client computer sends/receives data to/from the microcontroller using the user datagram protocol packets. The client computer connects to the server using Java applets that allow the user to command the position of the motor via a graphical user interface. The interface includes a slider for commanding the motor position from 0/spl deg/-360/spl deg/ and text input boxes for tuning the parameters of a position control algorithm "on-the-fly." A plot provides a visual display of the current position of the motor using real-time sensor data sent by the microcontroller. Our microcontroller-based remote control methodology can be readily applied to monitor and control other experimental hardware over the Internet.

We study algorithmic questions concerning a basic microeconomic congestion game in which there is a single provider that offers a service to a set of potential customers. Each customer has a particular demand of service and the behavior of the customers is determined by utility functions that are non-increasing in the congestion. Customers decide whether to join or leave the service based on the experienced congestion and the offered prices. Following standard game theory, we assume each customer behaves in the most rational way. If the prices of service are fixed, then such a customer behavior leads to a pure, not necessarily unique Nash equilibrium among the customers. In order to evaluate marketing strategies, the service provider is interested in estimating its revenue under the best and worst customer equilibria. We study the complexity of this problem under different models of information available to the provider.•We first consider the classical model in which the provider has perfect knowledge of the behavior of all customers. We present a complete characterization of the complexity of computing optimal pricing strategies and of computing best and worst equilibria. Basically, we show that most of these problems are inapproximable in the worst case but admit an "average-case FPAS." Our average case analysis covers general distributions for customer demands and utility thresholds. We generalize our analysis to robust equilibria in which players change their strategies only when this promises a significant utility improvement.•We extend our analysis to a more realistic model in which the provider has incomplete information. Following the game theoretic framework of Bayesian games introduced by Harsanyi, we assume that the provider is aware of probability distributions describing the behavior of the customers and aims at estimating its expected revenue under best and worst equilibria. Model checking is a technique for the verification of temporal logic specifications in state-transition systems. It can be applied to software, at design stages as well as at source code level. The latter in particular is constricted by the large space requirements of model checking. However, model checking is a promising technique for the improvement of software quality. We examined the applicability of existing model checking methods and tools to software in general and with a focus on e-commerce software systems developed at Intershop. Although model checking is currently not applicable to all domains, it is useful for certain restricted fields of application. One of these domains are Intershop's e-commerce systems, consisting of so called pipelines. We show the source code related verification concept for these pipelines and is part of an overall concept for the verification and quality assurance of Intershop's products.

User toolkits enable consumers to develop customized product applications without having dedicated technical knowledge. applied in the field of handheld computing, toolkits are a very powerful instrument to meet the growing demand for customized mobile applications. In this paper, the theoretical principles and functionalities of user interaction toolkits are translated into a technical software concept for mobile phone games. The presented toolkit is a new Internet based application allowing users to create a customized game on their desktop computer and to transfer it to handheld devices. In contrast to well known open source software development projects, no programming expertise is required. Thus, participation of innovative users is comparatively easy. In line with the open source concept, but as an extending feature to the toolkit approach, the presented solution is embedded in an online community. Thus, contributions by innovative users can be stored in a library leading to a continuously growing information pool of available components. Games and components can be passed on easily between customers, facilitating the adoption of other users' contributions as well as collaborative development between users. The community feature of the toolkit does not only provide the common toolset of online communities allowing for user-to-user communication, e.g. chats and bulletin boards, or text based contributions, e.g. recommendations, product evaluations and voting tools, but it also enables users to exchange and jointly develop actual product prototypes. In this regard, the presented 'toolkit for open innovation' is the foundation of a 'value web' in a unique manner: a value web in between consumers and users. The paper further derives economic benefits of the developed toolkit for mobile phone game creation theoretically and integrates them into a diversified business model. Binary decision diagram (BDD) and Boolean satisfiability (SAT) are two common techniques of logic circuit-based Boolean reasoning. Since circuit-width is a good measure of circuit complexity, in this paper, a circuit-width based heuristic for Boolean reasoning is presented, it can be used for integrating the BDD-based engine and SAT-based engine, and takes advantages of both engines. Thus this heuristic can avoid the potential memory explosion during constructing the BDDs, and can prevent the time-out phenomenon of SAT techniques. Compared with the previous heuristics, the proposed heuristic can save more computational resources, and can improve the performance of Boolean reasoning algorithms. This heuristic has been applied in combinational circuit test generation successfully. Experimental results show that, the proposed heuristic can be used for the Boolean reasoning with multiple engines efficiently.
