Cloud computing (CC) has become a very popular computing model in the last decade, as it has proved to be a cost-effective alternative to large-scale computers hosted in conventional Information Technologies (IT) department. The ability to provide on-demand IT-related resources either through the internet (public clouds) or private networks (private clouds) based on customer's needs, and the scalability they have to deliver resources horizontally, can be considered the main reasons for such popularity and have led such a CC platforms to a scenario involving the hosting of other types of systems, such as those that control large volume of data, like database management systems (DBMS).
The current Virtual Machine (VM) live migration research mainly focuses on transferring run-time memory state of VMs, but neglects the consistency of the network state while migration. This paper designs an Efficient ...

This paper presents a middleware infrastructure for integration of heterogeneous embedded devices in ubiquitous computing environments. The proposed infrastructure employs the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) as the underlying integration technology, allowing devices that adopt different networking standards to interact with each other, through the use of interconnection devices and software components responsible for building a communication path among them. A prototype implementation of this middleware infrastructure is also described, and results of performance measurements obtained with this prototype are presented. Copyright 2009 acm.

Gaussian Processes (GPs) are powerful non-parametric Bayesian models for function estimation, but suffer from high complexity in terms of both computation and storage. To address such issues, approximation methods have flourished in the literature, including model approximations and approximate inference. However, these methods often sacrifice accuracy for scalability. In this work, we present the design and evaluation of a distributed method for exact GP inference, that achieves true model parallelism using simple, high-level distributed computing frameworks. Our experiments show that exact inference at scale is not only feasible, but it also brings substantial benefits in terms of low error rates and accurate quantification of uncertainty.

Software metrics have been developed to measure the quality of software systems. A proper use of metrics requires thresholds to determine whether the value of a metric is acceptable or not. Many approaches propose to define thresholds based on large analyses of software systems. However it has been shown that thresholds depend greatly on the context of the project. Thus there is a need for an approach that computes thresholds by taking into account this context. In this paper we propose such approach with the objective to reach a trade-off between representativeness of the threshold and computation cost. Our approach is based on an unbiased selection of software entities and makes no assumptions on the statistical properties of the software metrics values. It can therefore be used by anyone, ranging from developer to manager, for computing a representative metric threshold tailored to their context. Copyright 2014 acm.
