Cloud computing technologies have matured enough that the service providers are compelled to migrate their services to virtualized infrastructure in cloud data centers. However, moving the computation and network to shared physical infrastructure poses a multitude of questions, both for service providers and for data center owners. In this work, we propose HyViDE - a framework for optimal placement of multiple virtual data center networks on a physical data center network. HyViDE preselects a subset of virtual data center network requests and uses a hybrid strategy for embedding them on the physical data center. Coordinated static and dynamic embedding algorithms are used in this hybrid framework to minimize the rejection of requests and fulfill QoS demands of the embedded networks. HyViDE can employ suitable static and dynamic strategies to meet the objectives of data center owners and customers. Experimental evaluation of our algorithms on HyViDE shows that, the acceptance rate is high with faster servicing of requests. Copyright 2017 acm.

We consider the problem of trafic routing in a road network in the event of a disaster, when there is a surge in vehicle movement from dense residential areas to designated safeshelters. We address the problem with multiple sources and a fixed sink in a κ × κ Manhattan grid road network to find a trafic distribution over the network such that the average time of travel from sources to sink is minimized. We consider queuing delay at each grid point of the Manhattan network when multiple grid points can become potential sources of new trafic generation, and then propose an optimal trafic distribution algorithm to minimize the total queuing delay of all vehicles to reach the given destination point. We then extend our technique to consider variable link delay (as a function of the volume of trafic ow through a link) along the links of the network. 2017 acm.

Some of the Cloud elasticity model's main shortcomings refer to the low reactivity due to resource granularity and large start up time at the infrastructure layer. In prior work, we advocate that the software layer may take part in the global elasticity process in order to cope with these shortcomings and hence achieve efficient Cloud elasticity. In this paper, we introduce ElaScript, a Domain Specific Language that offers Cloud administrators a simple and concise way to define complex elasticity-based reconfiguration plans. ElaScript is capable of dealing with both infrastructure and software elasticities, independently or together, in a coordinated way. We validate our approach by first showing the interest to have a Domain Specific Language offering multiple levels of control for Cloud elasticity, and then by showing its integration with a realistic well-known application bench-mark deployed in OpenStack and Grid'5000 infrastructure testbed. Results show the benefits of using ElaScript, and consequently the elasticity at the software layer, to improve system's reactivity to environment's changes. Copyright 2017 acm.

While most studies are concerned with the network performance and security of data centers in the cloud-a shared computing infrastructure, there is little research on the understanding of the end to-end performance and security of cloud services offered by cloud providers. That is, while cloud providers promise to deliver cloud services that meet predefined Quality of Services (QoS), there is nowadays a lack of efficient tools for the verification of the performance and security of cloud services a user has received. Such research, however, plays an important role in the successful delivery of cloud services. In this paper, we present a systematic way to evaluate the end-to-end performance and security of cloud services in a shared computing infrastructure. We design and develop an end-to-end SECUrity and Performance assessment framework (SECUPerf), where we experimentally and analytically investigate the performance and security of the routers along the path of cloud services between cloud users and providers. Our experimental results have demonstrated the applicability and usefulness of SECUPerf in the cloud. SECUPerf is useful to all the users in the shared computing infrastructure. c 2017 acm.

Water supply utilities have been increasingly looking for solutions to reduce water wastage. Many efforts have been made aiming to promote a better management of this resource. Fraud detection is one of these actions, as the irregular violations are usually held precariously, thus, causing leaks. In this context, the use of technology in order to automate the identification of potential frauds can be an important support tool to avoid water waste. Thus, this research aims to apply pattern recognition techniques in the implementation of an automated detection of suspected irregularities cases in water meters, through image analysis. The proposed computer vision system is composed of three steps: the detection of the water meter location, obtained by OPF classifier and HOG descriptor, detecting the seals through morphological image processing and segmentation methods;and the classification of frauds, in which the condition of the water meter seals is assessed. We validated the proposed framework using a dataset containing images of water meter inspections. At the last step, the proposed framework reached an average accuracy up to 81.29%. We concluded that a computer vision system is a promising strategy and has potential to benefit the analysis of fraud detection. Copyright 2017 acm.

This paper introduces a gold-standard corpus extracted from manually labeled tweets concerning urban issues. The main contribution is to provide a labeled tweet dataset which can be useful for building machine-learning classifiers in the urban issues domain, including geographical features. Thus, this corpus can also be useful for improving geoparsers to correctly identify place names in urban areas such as Pointsof-Interest (POI), Streets/Roads and Districts. Our method for building the corpus includes human-volunteer quality assessment and human-driven labeling using an ad hoc web application, the Tweet Annotator. The volunteers were asked to complete a feedback survey in order to identify the main difficulties during the labeling task. In this paper, we also report the findings from a case study carried out to analyze the spatial relationships in the generated corpus for the locations which a tweet may refer to: the geocoded, the user home and the mentioned ones.
