We present i*Chameleon, a configurable and extensible multimodal platform for developing highly interactive applications. The platform leverages a principled and comprehensive development cycle to systematically capture the multimodal interaction artifact. Importantly, by introducing MVC architectural pattern, it enforces the concept of separation-of-concerns to enable cross collaboration among device engineers, programmers, modality designers and interaction designers who are collectively working on different aspects of human computer interaction and programming. Collectively, the development efforts are combined, integrated and compiled by the i *Chameleon kernel to derive the multimodal interactive application. The i*Chameleon platform sets itself apart from previous works in that it advocates the need to engineer a software development approach that leverages a MVC software architectural pattern to promote ease of software development through division of responsibilities among engineers and HCI designers. To validate the usefulness of i*Chameleon, we describe several application case examples to demonstrate the ease of developing multimodal applications through systematic integration of the design models as described above. In this paper we consider an event based architectural component that may overcome the present reluctance to the use of Service Orientation (SOA) in military distributed real-time environments. In particular, we propose a hybrid architecture component that is decentralised in all respects, making it more reactive to real-time events, as well as being easier to analyse and adapt to changing needs. As centralised scheduling and orchestration of SOA services does not scale to distributed systems, our architecture removes this key inhibitor by distributing the data and control flow to a rule-driven Distributed Real-Time SOA (DRT-SOA) component that resides with each service. Embedded deadline driven task scheduling means each service can now dynamically adjust to changes in process priorities. We also propose a method of analysing the performance of the new architecture using the dynamics of Petri Nets and the guarantees of Real-Time Calculus. We present task level worst case analysis results using the proposed method and also present results obtained from an implementation of the proposed architecture in a naval combat system context. Software birthmarks are unique and native characteristics of a binary executable program that can be used for detecting software piracy. API (Application Programming Interface) calls in an MS Windows binary executable can be used as software birthmarks when there are no source codes available to detect software similarity. However, it is inefficient to extract birthmarks from all API calls during the execution of a binary executable. In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme for comparing software similarity. To reduce the number of comparisons used in the proposed scheme, we extract only the core API calls that are explicitly used in different programs. The birthmarks used for comparing the similarity between two programs can be obtained by extracting these core API calls. Our experimental results show that this proposed birthmark scheme using core API calls is efficient for evaluating software similarity. Copyright 2013 acm.

Visualization techniques of all sorts suffer from visual cluttering, the occlusion of visual information due to the overlap of graphical items;and from excessive complexity in analytical tasks due to multiple parallel perspectives. To cope with these problems, we introduce Hierarchical Visual Filtering, a novel interaction principle based on pragmatic and epistemic actions. Pragmatic actions here mean that the analyst is able to visually select and filter information, determining visual configurations that reveal different perspectives;epistemic actions mean that the analyst can record, annotate, and recall intermediate visualizations created pragmatically. To do so, we use a tree-like organization to keep multiple visualization workspaces linked according to the analytical decisions took by the user. Our goal is to promote an innovative systematization that can augment the potential for database visual inspection, and for visualization systems in general. It is our contention that Hierarchical Visual Filtering can inspire a novel scheme of visualization environments in which space limitations and complexity are treated by means of interactive tasks. After thirty years or more of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) many students still struggle to learn at the university level, while ever more techniques are being developed to help students learn and measure their success. In practice, however, efforts to reshape classes begin with questions such as: "How can I make use of this new technique?" Or, "How can I increase my students' critical thinking?" Such questions are often too broad to provide a clear focal point for designing efficient strategies. They sometimes draw attention to parts of the course not in great need of reform, and generally focus the process on the means (teaching) rather than the end (student learning). A shift is taking place in higher education so that teaching is approached not from content or from the teaching methods, but from the mental processes that are crucial to functioning in a discipline. Decoding the Disciplines (Middendorf & Pace, 2004) is an evidence-based, learner-centered methodology that can conclusively improve teaching by prioritizing what really matters in making meaning in a discipline and boosting learning outcomes in the classroom. It offers a meta-strategy, providing both a framework to define the task at hand and a means to determine which tools would be most useful in accomplishing it. Starting from the bottlenecks, the places where students get stuck, and connecting them with what experts do so they won't get stuck, the crucial mental processes drive the teaching and learning so students can be successful.

Support tools are necessary for the adoption of model-driven engineering of adaptive user interfaces (UI). Enterprise applications in particular, require a tool that could be used by developers as well as I.T. personnel during all the development and post-development phases. An IDE that supports adaptive model-driven enterprise UIs could further promote the adoption of this approach. This paper describes Cedar Studio, our IDE for building adaptive model-driven UIs based on the CEDAR reference architecture for adaptive UIs. This IDE provides visual design and code editing tools for UI models and adaptive behavior. In recent years, there has been increasing interest on using task-level pipelining to accelerate the overall execution of applications mainly consisting of Producer-Consumer tasks. This paper proposes an approach to achieve pipelining execution of Producer-Consumer pairs of tasks in FPGA-based multi-core architectures. Our approach is able to speedup the overall execution of successive, data-dependent tasks, by using multiple cores and specific customization features provided by FPGAs. An important component of our approach is the use of customized inter-stage buffer schemes to communicate data and to synchronize the cores associated to the Producer-Consumer tasks. In order to improve performance, we propose a technique to optimize out-of-order Producer-Consumer pairs where the consumer uses more than once each data element produced, a behavior present in many applications (e.g., in image processing). All the schemes and optimizations proposed in this paper were evaluated with FPGA implementations. The experimental results show the feasibility of the approach in both in-order and out-of-order Producer-Consumer tasks. Furthermore, the results using our approach to task-level pipelining and a multi-core architecture reveal noticeable performance improvements for a number of benchmarks over a single core implementation without using task-level pipelining. With the advent of cloud computing model, distributed caches have become the cornerstone for building scalable applications. Popular systems like Facebook [1] or Twitter use Memcached [5], a highly scalable distributed object cache, to speed up applications by avoiding database accesses. Distributed object caches assign objects to cache instances based on a hashing function, and objects are not moved from a cache instance to another unless more instances are added to the cache and objects are redistributed. This may lead to situations where some cache instances are overloaded when some of the objects they store are frequently accessed, while other cache instances are less frequently used. In this paper we propose a multi-resource load balancing algorithm for distributed cache systems. The algorithm aims at balancing both CPU and Memory resources among cache instances by redistributing stored data. Considering the possible conflict of balancing multiple resources at the same time, we give CPU and Memory resources weighted priorities based on the runtime load distributions. A scarcer resource is given a higher weight than a less scarce resource when load balancing. The system imbalance degree is evaluated based on monitoring information, and the utility load of a node, a unit for resource consumption. Besides, since continuous rebalance of the system may affect the QoS of applications utilizing the cache system, our data selection policy ensures that each data migration minimizes the system imbalance degree and hence, the total reconfiguration cost can be minimized. An extensive simulation is conducted to compare our policy with other policies. Our policy shows a significant improvement in time efficiency and decrease in reconfiguration cost. Resilient computing is defined as the ability of a system to stay dependable when facing changes. To mitigate faults at runtime, dependable systems are augmented with fault tolerance mechanisms such as replication techniques. These mechanisms have to be systematically and rigorously applied in order to guarantee the conformance between the application runtime behavior and its dependability requirements. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a design-driven development methodology for resilient computing systems. Our approach consists of refining the design with specifications dedicated to the dependability concerns. This design is then leveraged to support the development of the application while ensuring the traceability of the dependability requirements along the application life-cycle, including runtime adaptation. Approximate computing leverages the intrinsic resilience of applications to inexactness in their computations, to achieve a desirable trade-off between efficiency (performance or energy) and acceptable quality of results. To broaden the applicability of approximate computing, we propose quality programmable processors, in which the notion of quality is explicitly codified in the HW/SW interface, i.e., the instruction set. The ISA of a quality programmable processor contains instructions associated with quality fields to specify the accuracy level that must be met during their execution. We show that this ability to control the accuracy of instruction execution greatly enhances the scope of approximate computing, allowing it to be applied to larger parts of programs. The micro-architecture of a quality programmable processor contains hardware mechanisms that translate the instruction-level quality specifications into energy savings. Additionally, it may expose the actual error incurred during the execution of each instruction (which may be less than the specified limit) back to software. As a first embodiment of quality programmable processors, we present the design of Quora, an energy efficient, quality programmable vector processor. Quora utilizes a 3-tiered hierarchy of processing elements that provide distinctly different energy vs. quality trade-offs, and uses hardware mechanisms based on precision scaling with error monitoring and compensation to facilitate quality programmable execution. We evaluate an implementation of Quora with 289 processing elements in 45nm technology. The results demonstrate that leveraging quality-programmability leads to 1.05X-1.7X savings in energy for virtually no loss (
