Geographic information is present in our daily lives. This pervasiveness is also at the origin of several problems, including heterogeneity and trustworthiness - of the data sources, of the data providers, and of the data products derived from the original sources. Most efforts to improve this situation concentrate on establishing data collection and cura-tion standards, and quality metadata. This paper extends these efforts by presenting an approach to assess quality of geospatial data based on provenance. © 2012 Authors.

This paper introduces a new hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) crossover approach, Targeted EDA (TEDA), that combines a targeted intervention principle with Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDA) to solve optimal control problems. The approach is suited to tasks where the number of interventions used is an important part of solution fitness and includes problems such as cancer chemotherapy scheduling. Fitness Directed Crossover (FDC) is a modified GA crossover method that actively drives the number of selected control interventions towards those of a fitter individual. EDA are able to find fit solutions by discovering patterns within a population of selected individuals. TEDA uses FDC to select a suitable number of interventions to use while using an EDA based approach to select which interventions to set. Results suggest that by combining the two approaches, TEDA is able to outperform both EDA and FDC on a sample optimal control problem. © 2012 acm.

UML-RT is one of the languages used in the industrial practice of the model-driven development (MDD). The language is a proper profile of UML 2 and it uses UML-RT State Machines to model behavior of systems. This paper presents a technique for a symbolic execution of these machines, which introduces modular treatment of action code. This feature clearly separates the symbolic execution of the state machine itself from the symbolic execution of its action code and thus facilitates support of different action languages. The separation is achieved via a formalization of UML-RT State Machines in which functions are used to represent the result of the symbolic execution of the action code. Key parts of the technique are formalized and its implementation is presented. An example is used to illustrate different analyses including reachability, invariant checking, output analysis and test case generation. © 2012 acm.

The Gene Ontology has been used extensively for measuring the functional similarity among genes of various organisms. All the existing gene similarity methods use either molecular function or biological process taxonomies in computing gene similarity. In this paper, we apply an algorithm for combining graphs to connect the molecular function (F) and biological process (P) taxonomies into one FP taxonomy graph. We then measure the functional similarity of two genes using the resulting FP graph with path length function. The two aspects of GO, molecular function and biological process, are combined by connecting F nodes with P nodes using gene ontology annotation, GOA, databases. By combining two GO graphs, we can have more comprehensive way to explore the functional relationships between genes. We conducted the evaluation on a dataset of OMIM disease phenotypes to estimate the similarity of disease proteins from various diseases. © 2012 acm.

In this paper we propose the design and implementation of ServBGP, a service routing protocol for managing service collaboration among cloud providers in cloud computing. ServBGP is based on the policy-driven design of the well-known BGP Internet routing protocol to support the different service interaction models currently employed in the cloud particularly the monolithic, composite, and broker-based service models. The main contribution of this work lies in devising a system that autonomously manages the different aspects of service interaction and collaboration among service providers from service discovery and advertisement to service consumption and revocation. The ServBGP routing decision engine is planned to operate by processing cost-bidding and QoS advertisement messages from the different cloud providers. A proof of concept implementation of the ServBGP design is realized on the NetKit network emulation and virtualization platform using the standard BGPv4 protocol specification. © 2012 acm.

Motion blur often decreases the quality of document image and makes the text information within the document images unreachable by optical character recognition (OCR) or by a person. This paper presents a blur correction technique that aims to correct motion blur within document images. Given a blurred document image, an alpha channel map is first constructed based on specific image characteristics that are associated with text documents. Several blur parameters including blur direction and blur extent are then estimated from the constructed alpha channel map. Finally the blurred document image is restored by using Richardson-Lucy deconvolution technique based on the estimated blur parameters. Experiments on a number of document images with motion blur show that the proposed technique improves the document visual quality as well as the OCR performance significantly. © 2012 acm.

In automated requirements trace retrieval, significant improvements can be realized through incorporating user feedback. In this paper we introduce a relatively new technique named Direct Query Manipulation (DQM) and compare its effectiveness against Rocchio, the current defacto standard for integrating user feedback into automated tracing methods. The two techniques are evaluated empirically through a series of simulations and a user study, conducted by tracing requirements for WorldVista, an electronic healthcare information system against requirements from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology. Our results show that both Rocchio and DQM return significant improvements in trace quality in comparison to the vector space model, a fully automated technique. DQM performs slightly better than Rocchio in terms of trace quality with minimal difference in human effort. The hybrid approach provides further improvement over both individual approaches of DQM and Rocchio. © 2012 acm.

WiMAX is a technology that provides continuous high data throughput with low delays for various user types and modes of operation. The security protocols proposed for WiMAX impose a heavy performance overhead, especially on mobile subscribers running real time applications, such as VoIP and IPTV. We propose a hybrid security framework for WiMAX combining Hierarchical Identity-Based Cryptography (HIBC) and certificate based approaches to achieve lower bandwidth usage and higher reliability for stationary as well as mobile subscribers. Our security architecture efficiently resolves the performance issues existing with the current WiMAX security standards and can perform fast handovers. Our framework provides upto a 87% improvement in bandwidth compared to WiMAX's current security standard. © 2012 acm.

Cloud computing has gained popularity in both research and industrial communities. Cloud users can acquire computing resources on a need basis, achieving on demand scalability;Cloud providers can maximize resource utilizations of datacenters, increasing their return on investments. While Cloud systems are usually hosted in large datacenters and are centrally managed, other types of Cloud architectures can be imagined. In this paper we describe the design and prototype implementation of a fully decentralized, P2P Cloud. A P2P Cloud allows organizations or even individual to build a computing infrastructure out of existing resources, which can be easily allocated among different tasks. We focus on the problem of maintaining a coherent structure over a set of unreliable computing resources. We show that gossip-based protocols can be used to maintain an overlay network on top of the computing nodes, and to partition the set of resources into multiple slices in such a way that the failure of individual nodes do not compromise the overall structure. Resource partitioning is one of the most important features of a Cloud, and therefore must be supported efficiently and reliably on any Cloud architecture. We describe a prototype Java implementation that is being developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2012 acm.

A parallel computing mode based on GPU is proposed for the alignment of vast amounts of antibody DNA sequences produced by high-throughput sequencing technologies. Taking advantage of the massively parallel Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) of NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, we design a sequence alignment process by CPU-GPU hybrid computing. The mode proposed can effectively solve specific alignment problems of high-throughput sequence. Under the same computer hardware condition, the antibody DNA sequences from two animals, zebrafish and mouse, were aligned using CPU-GPU hybrid mode and CPU-only mode respectively, then their performances were compared. The experimental result demonstrates that the computing speed of CPU-GPU hybrid mode on sequence alignment is up to 50 times faster than that of CPU-only mode. Generally, our hybrid computing mode can provide a low-cost and high-speed solution for massive antibody sequence alignment. © 2012 Authors.
