Cloud services such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud and IBM's SmartCloud are quickly changing the way organizations are dealing with IT infrastructures and are providing online services. Today, if an organization needs computing power, it can simply buy it online by instantiating a virtual server image on the cloud. Servers can be quickly launched and shut down via application programming interfaces, offering the user a greater flexibility compared to traditional server rooms. This paper explores the general security risks associated with using virtual server images from the public catalogs of cloud service providers. In particular, we investigate in detail the security problems of public images that are available on the Amazon EC2 service. We describe the design and implementation of an automated system that we used to instantiate and analyze the security of public AMIs on the Amazon EC2 platform, and provide detailed descriptions of the security tests that we performed on each image. Our findings demonstrate that both the users and the providers of public AMIs may be vulnerable to security risks such as unauthorized access, malware infections, and loss of sensitive information. The Amazon Web Services Security Team has acknowledged our findings, and has already taken steps to properly address all the security risks we present in this paper. © 2012 acm.

We describe a middleware framework conceived to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of existing simulation applications by providing three capabilities: (1) access to grid-based and cloud-based execution, (2) access to advanced Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies such as simulation-based optimization, and (3) access to robust data processing and visualization. The framework has been applied to a variety of simulations in both commercial and open source programming languages employing both discrete and continuous modeling formalisms. A key design objective is to minimize the workload necessary to adapt a simulation for use with the framework. User experience to date reveals that the learning curve for the framework is reasonable, but further automation of key tasks would enhance the framework's utility. © 2012 IEEE.

Janus-FTL, a recently proposed Flash Translation Layer (FTL) software layer for flash memory storage, has the potential to reduce the worst case write time of flash memory storage by keeping hot data in the page mapping area and cold data in the block mapping area. In this paper, we present the design of the real-time Janus-FTL that guarantees worst case garbage collection cost and write response time. In the proposed FTL, each task needs to decide whether to place its data either in the page mapping area or the block mapping area. A naive optimal placement algorithm, which minimizes the worst case write time, has O(2N) time complexity for N tasks. We propose an algorithm reducing the time complexity from O(2N) to O(N log N). Through experiments, we verify that the real-time Janus-FTL reduces the worst case write time and, as a result, accommodates more real-time tasks than the previous state-of-the-art realtime page mapping FTL. © 2012 acm.

NAND ash memory has many advantages such as low-power consumption, shock-resistance, and non-volatility. For these reasons, NAND ash memory is used for data storage purposes in mobile, personal and even enterprise computer systems. When we use NAND ash memory as a means of data storage, it requires a garbage collection procedure due to its erase-before-write characteristic. The efficiency of this garbage collection is an important issue because it affects the performance of the NAND ash memory. In this paper, we propose an efficient garbage collection scheme that can be combined with previous hybrid FTLs. Our garbage collection scheme considers the associativity of the blocks when selecting a victim block. The proposed scheme effectively reduces the number of time-consuming block erasures. Our trace-driven simulation results show that the proposed garbage collection scheme can reduce the number of block erasures by as much as 14%. It can also reduce the average response time and maximum response time by nearly 10% and 70%, respectively. © 2012 acm.

Lesion segmentation plays an important role in medical image processing and analysis. There exist several successful dynamic programming (DP) based segmentation methods for general images. In those methods, the gradient is used as an important factor in the cost function to attract the contours to the boundaries. Since medical images have their characteristics such as low contrast, blurred edges and high noises, the gradient operator cannot work well enough to achieve a satisfactory performance for boundary detection. We define the local intra-class variance and combine it with the dynamic programming method to replace the traditional gradient operation. Experiments on synthetic and X-ray images are carried out and the results are compared with Canny and fast multilevel fuzzy edge detection (FMFED) algorithms. It is demonstrated that the proposed method performs better on medical images with low contrast, blurred edges and high noises. In addition, 483 regions of interest of mammograms randomly extracted from DDSM of the University of South Florida are used to compare our proposed method with the plane-fitting and dynamic programming method (PFDP), and the normalized cut segmentation method (Ncut). The results demonstrate that our method is more accurate and robust than PFDP and Ncut. © 2012 acm.

An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of immersion on a spatial updating task in a virtual panoramic environment (VPE). A virtual panorama, such as Google Streetview, is an environment that is comprised of 3D (spherical) images taken at regular intervals in a real world setting. Participants in this experiment navigated the National Mall area of Washington DC in Google Streetview using either a keyboard and mouse or a head-mounted display (HMD) with a head orientation tracker. © 2012 Authors.

Gesture-based controllers such as the Microsoft Kinect are low cost devices that allow a user to interact with complex, three-dimensional simulations using an interface argued to be more natural than game controllers, joy sticks, or a mouse and keyboard. This paper presents a controlled experimental evaluation of the use of Microsoft Kinect to support a 3D object manipulation task. Users were asked to match the orientation of objects with a manipulation interface that displayed either a self-avatar hand and arm or a sphere, both corresponding to users' arm gestures and wrist rotation. Our results show that while there was no overall difference in performance between the self-avatar and sphere visual display conditions, there were clear differences in the two visual display conditions as a function of gender and video-game experience. © 2012 acm.

Distances are regularly underestimated in immersive virtual environments (IVEs) [Witmer and Kline 1998;Loomis and Knapp 2003]. Few experiments, however, have examined the ability of calibration to overcome distortions of depth perception in IVEs. This experiment is designed to examine the effect of calibration via haptic and visual feedback on distance estimates in an IVE. Participants provided verbal and physical reach responses to target distances presented during three sessions;a baseline measure without feedback, a calibration session with visual and haptic feedback, and finally a post-calibration session without feedback. Feedback was shown to calibrate distance estimates within an IVE. Discussion focused on the possibility that costly solutions and research endeavors seeking to remedy the compression of distances may become less necessary if users are simply given the opportunity to use manual activity to calibrate to the IVE. © 2012 acm.
