Mobile platforms have compute-bound applications, which will be executed on top of ARM processors in many cases. For such applications, the use of the ARM NEON technology should be considered since it can significantly increase the computing power of the underlying processor for vector operations. The ARM NEON technology is a media processing architecture based on SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) that adds instructions targeted primarily for audio, video, and 3-D graphics processing. In this paper, we evaluate the ARM NEON technology in ARM Cortex-A8 processor for several open-source applications. To do this, we use the auto-vectorization feature of the ARM GCC compiler, which is implemented with the NEON technology. The evaluation criteria include program code size, execution time and power consumption, which are crucial in most embedded systems. © 2011 Authors.

Networks must be resilient to challenges such as malicious attacks or network overload and adapt their operation in an autonomous manner. Network simulations enable the testing of complex network scenarios (which would be difficult to emulate using actual hardware) in an inexpensive manner. However, it is difficult to evaluate resilience strategies that involve the interplay between a number of detection and remediation mechanisms that must be activated on demand according to events observed in the network (as opposed to hardcoded protocols). In this paper we propose the notion of a policy-based resilience simulator based on the integration of a network simulator and a policy management framework. This permits the evaluation of resilience strategies consisting of mechanisms whose behaviour can be adapted during runtime - e.g. setting flags, dropping connections, triggering or stopping monitoring sessions, etc. We employ policies to specify the required adaptations, which are de-coupled from the hard-wired implementations of the simulated components, according to conditions observed during run-time in the simulation. We can thus observe how real policies affect the operation and the behaviour of simulated components, and then evaluate the effectiveness of resilience strategies before they are deployed in the network infrastructure. © 2011 acm.

Recently, flash memory is widely used as a non-volatile storage for embedded applications such as cellular phones, mp3 players, digital cameras, and so on. The software layer called FTL (flash translation layer) becomes more important since it is a key factor in the overall flash memory system performance. Many researchers have proposed FTL algorithms for small block flash memory in which the size of a physical page of flash memory is same to the size of a data sector of the file system. However, major flash vendors have now produced large block flash memory in which the size of a physical page is larger than the file system's data sector size. Since large block flash memory has new features, designing FTL algorithms optimized for large block flash memory is a challenging one. In this paper, we provide an efficient FTL named LSTAFF*for large block flash memory. LSTAFF*is designed to achieve better performance by using characteristics of large block flash memory and to provide safety by abiding by restrictions of large block flash memory. Our experimental results show that LSTAFF*is an optimized FTL algorithm for large block flash memory. © 2011 acm.

As a medical software industry develops in a variety of its fields, the studies on medical software using 3D a virtual model are also being constantly conducted. In orthodontia, one of the fields where the 3D virtual model can be applied, this 3D virtual model is used to simulate treatments of orthodontic patients through several stages of tooth movement, ranging from initial malocclusion to final malocclusion. And set-up model is made into the most ideal treatment objective. This set-up model forms the foundation in manufacturing transparent and thin overlay equipment. It is esthetic and easy to use, so a number of patients prefer it. But there have been a few studies on it. In addition, because of high cost and much time till checking out their treatment process, it appears that the satisfaction level is low. Thus, this study proposed a 3D orthodontia system that provides all simulations of treatment processes and set-up model in advance for patients to raise their satisfaction level and reduce treatment expenses. © 2011 Authors.

In this paper we study sufficient conditions for sensor redundancy that can be used without any coordinate or geometric information. We assume boolean sensing model: each sensor observes a disc of radius rs around his position, and can communicate with other sensors up to a distance rc. We prove that if rs ≥ rc, any sensor with five neighbors that are pairwise not neighbors is redundant, and this is best possible. With a slightly stronger model that sensors can distinguish close and distant neighbors, we generalizes to the case where rs ≤ r c in several ways: any sensor is redundant if it has m neighbors within distance αmrs, being pairwise farther than rs, where m = 3, 4, 5 and α3 ≈ 0.62, α4 ≈ 0.81, α5 = 1;or if it has g(α) neighbors within distance rs that are pairwise farther than αrs, where α Ε]0, 1], g(1) = 5 and 15 ≤ g((√6 - √2)/2) ≤ 16. © 2011 acm.

We develop an effective method for the study of cervical vertebra maturation (CVM) for bone age evaluation. Such studies need an accurate X-ray radiographs segmentation of cervical vertebra. It is difficult to have a good segmentation on this type of images. Current segmentation methods do not work well on scanned images from analog image X-ray radiographs of cervical vertebra. A new method for analysis of cervical bone age is proposed. Two key techniques are developed in this proposed segmentation algorithm: (1) a fitting weight matrix is built to reduce the effect of subjective factors entered by the user when fast marching method is used to obtain the initial rough outline of cervical vertebra, and (2) apply a curve fitting method based on rotating and overlapping parabolic curves to derive the final segments of cervical vertebra. Furthermore, the user can calculate corresponding parameters from segmented results to assess the bone age. Experimental results using the proposed algorithm show that our algorithm is more accurate than those of fast marching method (FMM) and radiologists through repetition. It also shows that the proposed method has a higher accuracy on the correlation of the skeletal maturity indicators (SMI) and quantitative cervical vertebral maturation (QCVM). © 2011 acm.

Recently, the popularity of mobile smart phones has fostered the development of a variety of mobile Mashup applications. A mobile Mashup application retrieves and glues together resources on the Web to create a new service. Compared with mobile Web browsers, mobile Mashup applications provide users with fancy GUIs and specialized services. Thus, mobile Mashup applications have become a significant role on mobile phones. Due to low-bandwidth wireless links and limited battery capacity, a large number of transmissions of mobile applications is prohibitive. However, because mobile clients mainly use mobile Web browsers to access the Web, prior work only focused on reducing the data sent to mobile Web browsers. In this paper, we present a proxy system as well as several techniques to reduce the volume of transmissions sent from and received by mobile Mashup applications based on the observations on characteristics of RESTful APIs. We propose an API query language (AQL), which enables mobile applications to batch multiple RESTful API method calls into one single query, thereby reducing the number of HTTP requests and responses. In addition, we employ an image multi-get module and Gzip compression module for image and text transmission reduction, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed system and techniques effectively reduces the number of HTTP requests and responses and sizes of packets. © 2011 acm.

As the internet is evolving for the last two decades, home networks that can connect all home appliances are emerging. One important topic in such a network is how to reduce the power consumption of all home appliances, since the appliances consume significant power in total even in standby mode. This paper proposes a system called SPRS (Standby Power Reduction System), which tries to reduce the power consumption by physically turning off appliances in standby mode. It is possible by a centralized power management server plus a sensor device monitoring the power consumption of the associated appliance, connected between a socket outlet and the power cable of the appliance. Through experiments, we show that the proposed system detects whether an appliance connected is in standby mode, and cuts off the power at an appropriate instant in order to save the standby power. © 2011 Authors.
