In recent years, the discipline of computing has matured to the point of having distinct sub elements, each of which is developing curriculum recommendations, accreditation criteria, conferences, professional societies and publications. In particular, five distinct curriculum projects range in status from completed some time ago computing Curricula 2001: Computer Science (CS-2001)[4] and IS 2002 Model Curriculum and Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems (IS-2002)[1]), through almost completed as of the writing of this special session proposal, and very likely to be published by the time of SIGCSE 2005 computing Curricula 2004: Software Engineering [2] and computing Curricula: Computer Engineering [5]) to one that will likely be finished in late 2005 or early 2006 computing Curricula: Information Technology). More broadly, recent work in the UK to identify the variety of computing related programs currently offered in British universities identified 2,400 distinct program names [3].We are making an interim report on, and seeking input into, a project to keep the family of computing related disciplines together. This project is partially funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF grant 0338546, Special Project: All in the Family: A unified representation of the computing and information related disciplines), and is being run by a joint task force from several professional societies, with acm taking the *** roughly, the goals of the project are to provide a synthesis of all that is computing, and various ways of organizing and visualizing that synthesis. This project began in late 2003, and got started in earnest in early 2004. We anticipate completing the work late in 2005 or early in 2006. Thus SIGCSE 2005 is the perfect time for us both to report on our work to date, and to get valuable feedback from the community.
We present recent results for meson decay constants calculated on configurations with two flavours of O(a)-improved Wilson fermions. Non-perturbative renormalisation is applied and quark mass dependencies as well as f...

The computer science community has been looking for parallel languages and models with a higher level of abstraction and modularity, without performance penalties, that could be used in conjunction with advanced software engineering techniques, and that are suitable to work with large-scale programs. This paper discusses how the # parallel programming model addresses the issues of modularity and abstraction of parallel programs using the techniques of separation of concerns.

The convergence of mobile communications and distributed networked computing has provided the foundation for the development of a new channel of electronic business - mobile business. Building on the strengths of this medium, the context of the individual and the nature of mobile devices, the scope of this new channel is immense, and we see novel solutions being applied in consumer, business, government, healthcare and many other areas. Following practice, research into mobile business has begun to grow significantly over the last five years to the point where we now see dedicated journals and conferences. The aim of this paper is to provide an assessment of the state of mobile business research. Using a detailed longitudinal analysis and taxonomy of more than 230 papers from key research outlets, we demonstrate the emergence of this research area and its current status. We also provide a critique of current research and some recommendations for future research into mobile business.

The proceedings contains 24 papers from the conference on MOBIHOC 2004 - proceedings of The Fifth acm International symposium On Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and computing. The topics discussed include: asymptotic critical transmission radius and critical neighbor number for k-connectivity in wireless ad hoc networks;error characteristics of ad hoc positioning systems (APS);on greedy geographic routing algorithms in sensing-covered networks;using labeled paths for loop-free on-demand routing in ad hoc networks and market sharing games applied to content distribution in ad-hoc networks.
A lot of clustering technologies are being applied to websites these days. A webserver cluster can be configured with either a high performance hardware switch or LVS (Linux Virtual Server) software. A high performanc...

Summary form only given. The grid, or grid computing, provides a new and unrivalled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. Last year at DS-RT 2004 a panel was convened to consider the impact of the grid on distributed simulation. Four members presented their views of this area and together they tried to identify the main research issues involved in applying grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. These challenges included not only technical ones, but also social ones such as management methodology and the development of standards. This year we revisit this fast changing technology and ask the questions: 1) What major changes has grid computing had over the past year?; 2) How can distributed simulation and related applications benefit from grid computing?; 3) What are the barriers to this?; 4) Are there alternative new technologies that would be a better ROI for distributed simulation than grid computing?.

How do we consider problems and models in the practice of simulation? It is our possibly contentious observation that simulation model solving seems to be more critical to the mission of simulation modeling than problem solving. Inspired by the theme of this year's Winter Simulation Conference, we ask the question, "Is problem solving, or simulation model solving, mission critical?" To investigate this we look at three perspectives, those of the textbook, the article and the editorial. The textbook perspective is the balance of the "traditional" view of simulation presented by the academic textbook against practical experience. The article perspective is a classification of papers published in four leading simulation journals in the year 2004 (acm TOMACS, SIMULATION, Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory, and Simulation & Gaming). The editorial perspective is a discussion of editorial policy presented by the same journals. Our findings show that our observation is not contradicted.

Greetings and welcome to ESEC/FSE'05, the Joint 10th EuropeanSoftware Engineering Conference and 13th acm SIGSOFT symposium onthe Foundations of Software Engineering!
ESEC/FSE is an internationally renowned forum for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recentinnovations, trends, experiences, and challenges in the field ofsoftware engineering. Held bi-yearly, ESEC/FSE brings togetherexperts from academia and industry to exchange the latest researchresults, state of the art, and state of the practice. Theconference offers an exciting program of events, including keynotetalks by leaders in the field, technical paper presentations, workshops, tutorials, research tool demonstrations, and a doctoralsymposium on innovative research in software engineering.
ESEC/FSE'05 takes place in Lisbon, a city with a rich andeventful history. According to legend, it was founded by Ulysses;Romans and Moors dwelled here for centuries. In the 15th century, itwas the starting point for several of the sea voyages of theDiscoveries Age that brought East and West closer together. Lisbonhosted the European Capital of Culture in 1994, a World Exhibitionin 1998, and the UEFA Cup in 2004. All these and many other eventsleft their mark, shaping Lisbon into a city that displays old andnew architectural, gastronomical and cultural influences.
This year there were 201 technical paper submissions (thelargest number of submissions to ESEC/FSE). Each submission wasreviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee, and inmany cases four. On the basis of these reviews, the ProgramCommittee accepted 32 full papers for inclusion in the proceedingsand presentation in the technical program. We were pleased that thequality of paper submissions was very high and the ProgramCommittee spent a great deal of time deliberating and discussingfinal decisions in a face-to-face meeting.
Besides the technical papers, we offer research tooldemonst

We initiate the systematic study of algorithmic issues involved in finding equilibria (Nash and correlated) in games with a large number of players; such games, in order to be computationally meaningful, must be presented in some succinct, game-specific way. We develop a general framework for obtaining polynomial-time algorithms for optimizing over correlated equilibria in such settings, and show how it can be applied successfully to symmetric games (for which we actually find an exact polytopal characterization), graphical games, and congestion games, among others. We also present complexity results implying that such algorithms are not possible in certain other such games. Finally, we present a polynomial-time algorithm, based on quantifier elimination, for finding a Nash equilibrium in symmetric games when the number of strategies is relatively small.
