NEC has been instrumental in establishing both the first- and second-generation digital signal processors. NEC's mu PD7720 is the first-generation digital signal processor (DSP). It was the first DSP device to employ Harvard architecture. To meet special requirements, there is an EPROM version ( mu PD77P20), a mask ROM version ( mu PD7720A), low-power CMOS mask ROM version ( mu PD77C20A), as well as versions for extended temperature and higher speeds. The first-generation DSP found a wide range of applications. algorithms for industrial applications running off-line on main-frame computers, or in real time on expensive and inflexible array processors could be performed on the mu PD7720. Several areas that have experienced the most gain from DSP chips are: telecommunications (modem, switching, echo/noise cancelling), military (radar, sonar, remote sensing), instrumentation (filters, correlators, FFT), industry (robotics, imageprocessing., speech processing.(compression, recognition, synthesis), and consumer electronics (digital audio, sound synthesis).

The problem of array handling in the design of data-flow multiprocessor systems is considered, taking the MIT tagged data-flow architecture for an example. The authors demonstrate two solutions, namely, the I-structures and the token relabeling approach, and apply them to two well-known numerical algorithms: the fast Fourier transform and the LU decomposition algorithm. These algorithms have been chosen because they are representative of a large class of algorithms and provide a good benchmark for the evaluation of the performance of data-flow systems. The results of a deterministic simulation of Arvind's data-flow machine are presented and show the contrast between the two structure representation methods.

When processing.vectors on SIMD computers, the interconnection network may become the performances bottleneck if it lacks an efficient routing control unit. Many of the multistage networks that have been designed have but general control algorithms that are too time consuming to be used at execution time. This has led many manufacturers to use crossbar networks in the design of SIMD computers. The author previously defined the Sigma network SIGMA **( **n **) and gave realistic algorithms to control it for performing families of permutations covering standard needs in vector processing. Here the design of a very efficient control unit for the Sigma network SIGMA **( **4 **) (16 entries, 16 exits) is considered.

This paper presents a unified analysis of a class of unitary transforms including the discrete Fourier, the Walsh Hadamard, the discrete Hartley, and the discrete cosine transforms. These transforms possess a common recursive property that allows us to obtain the next higher-order transform from two identical, preceding lower-order transforms. This recursive property eventually leads us to formulate a fast, efficient recursive algorithm for the discrete Hartley transform, from which the fast processing.algorithm for the discrete cosine transform can also be obtained. Hybrid implementations using state-of-the-art integrated optics in digital format have also been proposed for such fast, efficient processing.algorithms.

This paper describes a workstation and a software development environment designed to facilitate the investigation of integrated signal/symbol processing.in image understanding and graphics processing. The workstation is comprised of two complementary, high-performance processors connected via a high-speed interface: the Pixar 2D image computer and the Symbolics 36xx Lisp machine. Some of the current and potential applications of the system include developing and evaluating new image analysis and feature extraction algorithms, investigating the role of the extracted features in perceptual aggregation, object detection/identification and scene analysis, and assisting in the creation of prototypical image understanding systems.
