Thanks to immersion and interaction, Virtual Reality (VR) offers a shift of paradigm compared to traditional computergraphics or simulation software. Most VR applications include a visual rendering part. However, efficient and relevant visual interfacing of a human user (who can be a designer, the final user of a future product, a trainee or the subject of an experiment) raises issues about visual interfaces and depth perception in computer generated images. In this survey we review the issues raised by the visual part of VR applications. We particularly focus on the commonly used stereoscopic vision by studying its constraints and show how an efficient stereoscopic application should be designed.

TOF PET 3D reconstruction adds another layer of complexity. Thus it becomes a challenge to find the most efficient method to optimize the reconstruction without compromising image quality. In this study, mCT PET scanner data is used for image reconstruction and comparison. This study shows how an ultrafast forward and back projector pair TOF 3D reconstruction is implemented based on Symmetry SIMD Projector (SSP) algorithm. The Symmetry in the algorithm translates to four symmetric relationships;+90 degrees symmetry of the projection angle, mirror-symmetry on the Radial bin axis, symmetry of the integral direction along LOR, symmetry of the oblique segment angle. The use of SIMD allows the access of four data points by one operand which reduces computation time by a factor of four. Therefore, SSP algorithm can ideally reduce the computation time of forward projection and back projection by a factor of 64. The computer hardware used is off the shelf workstation with Intel Xeon E5540 2xCPU, 12GB, 1xGPU Tesla. The reconstructed image size is 400x400x109 pixels. For the same data set, the SSP algorithm using a CPU based reconstruction was able to achieve twice the timing improvement over the standard GPU counterpart.

Non-photo realistic rendering is common to both computergraphics and Digital imageprocessing, and encompasses a broad class of techniques for creating artistic images from scenes, geometric models or photographic images. In this context, this paper presents a framework designed to generate cartoon-like abstracted images, which combines techniques for region smoothing and segmentation, edge detection, adjustment of brightness/saturation and color harmonization. A subjective evaluation involving the output of related work was performed. Additionally, an experimental study involving human evaluators was conducted, in which the proposed approach was compared with five existing tools for image cartoonization. Statistical analysis performed on experimental data from one-way (1-F) ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer tests revealed significant differences in preference between results created by the proposed approach and those created by the competing approaches.
