Hierarchical video segmentation provides region-oriented scale-space, i.e., a set of video segmentations at different detail levels in which the segmentations at finer levels are nested with respect to those at coarser levels. Hierarchical methods have the interesting property of preserving spatial and neighboring information among segmented regions. Here, we transform the hierarchical video segmentation into a graph partitioning problem in which each part will correspond to one region of the video. Thus, we propose a new methodology for hierarchical video segmentation which computes a hierarchy of partitions by a reweighting of original graph in which a segmentation can be easily infered. The temporal coherence is given, only, by color information instead of more complex features. We provide an extensive comparative analysis, considering both quantitative and qualitative assessments showing efficiency, ease of use, and temporal coherence of our methods. According to our experiments, the hierarchy infered by our two methods, p-HOScale and cp-HOScale, produces good quantitative and qualitative results when applied to video segmentation. Moreover, unlike other tested methods, our methods are not influenced by the number of supervoxels to be computed, as shown in the experimental analysis, and present a low space cost.

We describe a new method that generates images that represent various painting styles by constructing the process of painterly rendering, using ACTIT (Automatic Construction of Tree-structural image Transformation). ACTIT is an image processing system that automatically constructs image transformations by using Genetic Programming (GP) and image processing examples. The constructed image transformations can then be applied to other images. In our method, we add two extensions to ACTIT so that it can be applied for constructing the painterly rendering process. The first extension comprises image processing filters that append non-photo realistic effects. The second is our proposed new fitness function of ACTIT for evaluating the features of the images used for painterly rendering. The results of experiments in which we used three painting style examples show that our method constructs three image transformations that produce the respective painting styles.

The technique of multispectral imaging has gained growing attention in recent years. This is mostly due to the potential to provide rich information that can be used to improve material classification or product quality assessment. Due to the complex nature of the corresponding datasets, processing tools are needed to gain insights into the data. In this paper, we propose an analysis tool to assist a user with the interactive evaluation of multispectral images. The aim of the approach is to provide easier access to the wealth of information and to obtain a segmented multispectral image. Multivariate radial- and image-based visualizations, are meaningfully combined by linked views to find a proper segmentation in a semi-automatic way. The linked views are complemented by a novel evaluation view that allows the evaluation and the refinement of the segmentation, if necessary. We show usage examples of our proposed processing approach for multispectral scene data.

Object detection and classification are key tasks in computer vision that can facilitate high-throughput image analysis of microscopy data. We present a set of local image descriptors for three-dimensional (3D) microscopy datasets inspired by the well-known Haar wavelet framework. We add orientation, illumination and scale information by assuming that the neighborhood surrounding points of interests in the image can be described with ellipsoids, and we increase discriminative power by incorporating edge and shape information into the features. The calculation of the local image descriptors is implemented in a graphics processing Unit (GPU) in order to reduce computation time to 1 millisecond per object of interest. We present results for cell division detection in 3D time-lapse fluorescence microscopy with 97.6% accuracy.

The system characteristics of 4G and beyond 4G broadband mobile system (BMS) are high data rate (throughput), low latency (delay), high mobility (speed), and high capacity. The current recognized 4G BMS needs to meet the requirements specified by IMT-Advanced of ITU-T. Those BMSs include 3GPP-LTE/LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16e/m (WiMAX 1/WiMAX 2). In the meantime, the smart device (smartphone and tablet) with powerful CPU/GPU, HD digital camera, digital compass, GPS, and various sensors are becoming rapidly popular. In addition, the architecture and capability of cloud computing are getting adopted in various applications and services, a cloud-based 4G/LTE is one example of telecommunications services. With the combination of more deployments of cloud-based BMSs and increasing usages of smart mobile devices, there are many potential appealing applications and services with real-time and/or interactive features can be created. In this article, we explore the technology and applications of mobile augmented reality (MAR) on the cloud-based 4G BMS (TD-LTE) and smart devices environment. The developed smart device-based MAR system (SD-MAR) with the 4G/TD-LTE experimental network testbed is located at MIRC/BML in the campus of National Chiao Tung University. This testbed consists of several brandy dongles/tablets/smartphones (as UE), two NSN TD-LTE base stations (as eNodeB), one core network (as EPC), and cloud-based servers and data center. To study the technology and applications on SD-MAR system, we have integrated research teams/people specialized in the areas of cloud computing, smart device technology, 4G broadband mobile system, computer vision and image processing, gesture recognition, computer graphics and rendering, and system integration. The applications discussed in the article include real-time accurate navigation/tourism for indoor and outdoor, collaborative urban design, and multiuser interactive motion learning system in the mobile environment.

Environments populated with crowds are employed in various applications, such as games, simulators and editors. Many of these environments require not only a realistic and detailed rendering, but it must run smoothly in real-time. This task easily exhausts the system's resources, even considering the current state-of-the-art hardware. Therefore, crowd rendering in real-time remains a challenge in computer graphics. Approaches exploiting levels of detail, visibility culling and image-based rendering are presented in the literature to facilitate this task. The first two increase the efficiency of rendering, but sometimes are not enough to keep an interactive frame rate. Some researches on this subject focus on image-based rendering techniques, specifically with the use of impostors. In this work it is proposed a method that balances the computational demand of rendering job by varying the threshold's distance of the representation switch between full geometry (mesh) and image-based (impostors) models in accordance with the available resources.

Recognition of car make and model from frontal images is a common problem in computer vision. We refined existing approaches based on ROIs defined relative to the number plate. Square-Mapped-Gradient features are extracted from the ROI and recognition is accomplished by classification utilizing a learning set. The classifier is evaluated using ground truth data provided manually. Via numerical simulations we evaluated the detection tolerance of the method and proposed semi-automatic and fully automatic methods. The SMG-based classification is able to give nearly perfect results when there is no outlier class, which decreases to 92% and 87% in case of the semi-automatic and fully automatic methods, respectively. Separation between outliers and known types can be balanced by a threshold. Since the size of the learning set can be kept low and the size of the SMG features are small, this approach can be successfully used to solve mobile client-server scenarios.

Wide-baseline stereo matching is a common problem of computer vision. By the explosion of smartphones equipped with camera modules, many classical computer vision solutions have been adapted to such platforms. Considering the widespread use of various networking options for mobile phones, one can consider a set of smart phones as an ad-hoc camera network, where each camera is equipped with a more and more powerful computing engine in addition to a limited bandwidth communication with other devices. Therefore the performance of classical vision algorithms in a collaborative mobile environment is of particular interest. In such a scenario we expect that the images are taken almost simultaneously but from different viewpoints, implying that the camera poses are significantly different but lighting conditions are the same. In this work, we provide quantitative comparison of the most important keypoint detectors and descriptors in the context of wide baseline stereo matching. We found that for resolution of 2 megapixels images the current mobile hardware is capable of providing results efficiently.

The main objective of Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems is to retrieve a ranked list containing the most similar images of a collection given a query image, by taking into account their visual content. Although these systems represent a very promising approach, in many situations is very challenging to assure the quality of returned ranked lists. Supervised approaches rely on training data and information obtained from user interactions to identify and then improve low-quality results. However, these approaches require a lot of human efforts which can be infeasible for many systems. In this paper, we present two novel unsupervised measures for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists in CBIR tasks. Given an estimation of the effectiveness of ranked lists, many CBIR systems can, for example, emulate the training process, but now without any user intervention. Improvements can also be achieved on several unsupervised approaches, such as re-ranking and rank aggregation methods, once the estimation measures can help to consider more relevant information by distinguishing effective from non-effective ranked lists. Both proposed measures are computed using a novel image representation of ranked lists and distances among images considering a given dataset. The objective is to exploit the visual patterns encoded in the image representations for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists. Experiments involving shape, color, and texture descriptors demonstrate that the proposed approaches can provide accurate estimations of the quality in terms of effectiveness of ranked lists. The use of proposed measures are also evaluated in image retrieval tasks aiming at improving the effectiveness of rank aggregation approaches.

An important element in the proper functioning of a power line is to ensure proper maintenance of all its components. This requires their appropriate diagnosis. It is a difficult task to evaluate the condition of the different elements such as supporting structures, insulators, conductors in a continuous manner. The existing diagnostic methods are lengthy and expensive. The authors propose the use of image processing methods in the CAD environment for the diagnosis of the elements of overhead power lines, in particular, electrical and protective equipment.
