The majority of visual communication today occurs by ways of spatial groupings, plots, graphs. data renderings, photographs and video frames. However, the degree of semantics encoded in these visual representations is still quite limited. The use of icons as a form of information encoding has been explored to a much lesser extent. In this paper we describe a framework that uses a dual domain approach involving natural language text processing and global image databases to help users identify icons suitable to visually encode abstract semantic concepts.

This paper introduces a new high dynamic range (HDR) display system that generates a physical 3D HDR image without using stereoscopic methods. To boost contrast beyond that obtained using either a hardcopy or a projector, we employ a multiprojection system to superimpose images onto a textured solid hardcopy that is output by a 3D printer or a rapid prototyping machine. We introduce two basic techniques for our 3D HDR display. The first technique computes an optimal placement of projectors so that projected images cover the hardcopy's entire surface while maximizing image quality. The second technique allows a user to place the projectors near the computed optimal position by projecting from each projector images that act as visual guides. Through proof-of-concept experiments, we were able to modulate luminance and chrominance with a registration error of less than 3 mm. The physical contrast ratio obtained using our method was approximately 5000:1, while it was 5:1 in the case of viewing the 3D printout under environmental light and 1000:1 in the case of using the projectors to project the image on regular screens.

We propose a method for sign language animation by skin region detection applied to a thermal infrared image. In a system incorporating the proposed method, a 3D CG model corresponding to a person's characteristic posture while using sign language is generated automatically by pattern recognition of the thermal image, and then a person's hand in the CG model is set. The hand part is made manually beforehand. If necessary, the model can be replaced manually by a more appropriate model corresponding to training key frames and/or the same generated model can be refined manually. In our experithents, three hearing-impaired people, experienced in using sign language, recognized the Japanese sign language gestures of 70 words expressed as animation with 94.3% accuracy. We further improved the system by correcting the position and the direction of the hand of the automatically generated model through the use of a fuzzy algorithm and simulated annealing.

We present a recognition-driven navigation system for large-scale 3D virtual environments. The proposed system contains three parts, virtual environment reconstruction, feature database building and recognition-based navigation. The virtual environment is reconstructed automatically with LIDAR data and aerial images. The feature database is composed of image patches with features and registered location and orientation information. The database images are taken at different distances from the scenes with various viewing angles, and these images are then partitioned into smaller patches. When a user navigates the real world with a handheld camera, the captured image is used to estimate its location and orientation. These location and orientation information are also reflected in the virtual environment. With the proposed patch approach, the recognition is robust to large occlusions and can be done in real time. Experiments show that our proposed navigation system is efficient and well synchronized with real world navigation.
