The paper exploits the combination of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and Java for the construction of highly interactive animations, whose behaviour is defined in real time by a user's actions. The animations are modeled in VRML, which allows the definition of a Java program to process and generate events that determine the behaviour of scene elements. An application for the generation of Java graphical interfaces was developed, aiming to establish the communication between the user and the VRML environment, sending parameters to the program that controls the animation.

In this work, a morphological representation of a template matching algorithm for gray-scale images is presented. This paper presents a novel technique for PCB inspection based on the comparison of the Connected Table of a Reference and a Test image. The method is based on connected component analysis, which is a natural way to extract the connectivity information of the conductors of a PCB. The registration of the PCB holes, which is a common problem related to referential model techniques, is solved by the concept of zone of influence of each hole. This paper describes the method and its implementation using standard Morphology imageprocessing techniques. A result of applying the technique to real images is shown.

We have developed a Web based application to accelerate the visualization of VRML scenes located in a remote server. This application enables the user to extract only the parts of a scene that are of actual interest. The extracted parts represent one or more sub trees of the hierarchical structure of the VRML scene, and only these parts will be rendered and visualized in the local computer. By reducing the complexity (size) of the remote scene, less data are transmitted from the remote server and the rendering process becomes faster in the local computer. The application is written in Java and is executed as an applet embedded in an HTML page.

Diffusion and correlation effects are two principal phenomena which have been studied for years and several visualization techniques have been proposed to help scientists to understand them. The analysis of these phenomena will help to extract important information from data sets. To understand these problems we combine wavelet and entropy analysis to evaluate the evolution of these behaviors through scale and time. We present image case studies to show several different kinds of behaviors of these effects. Some of them are fallible cases and not reliable, as the images do not show the desired information. We calculate entropy of smooth and detail coefficient sets, generated by wavelet transform of these sample images in each scale, to obtain measures that allow us to evaluate these behaviors according to the organization complexity. These measures can provide an indication about the quality of the rendered images.

This paper presents an overview of the current state of the art in image fusion, with an emphasis on the emergence of new techniques, often issued from other domains like artificial intelligence and uncertainty modeling. We address the two following points: firstly the aim of data fusion and its specificity when image information has to be combined, with emphasis on the respective roles of numerical and symbolic information, vs. numerical and symbolic types of treatment, secondly the theoretical frameworks for modeling imprecision and uncertainty (probability, fuzzy sets, belief functions). The main steps of image fusion are illustrated in a simple example in 3D medical image fusion.

Mathematical Morphology (MM) studies the representation of image operators in terms of some families of simple operators, called the elementary operators of MM. A drawback of this approach is that the representation of some operators is not efficient, since it uses a large number of elementary operators. Fast algorithms are the solution found by some authors to implement image operators that have complex representations. Two drawbacks of this solution are: i-they change the architecture of the software that implement the operators by the morphological representation. ii-these implementations are very specific and can not be used to implement other operators. Here, we study some of these fast algorithms and show that they can be transformed into morphological representations with equivalent performance, if proper data structures and algorithms are used to implement the elementary operators. Finally, some experimental results that illustrate these ideas are given.

In this paper we present a nonseparable complementary filter (CF) bank for image compression. We base our design of the filter bank on the two-dimensional (2D) multirate processing and on properties of complementary filters. Perfect reconstruction is guaranteed when the CF bank is implemented with quincunx sampling and filtering, but not otherwise. In all cases, however the analysis and synthesis are performed without aliasing. The CF bank can be related to wavelet theory, permitting us to derive scale and wavelet functions for different sampling and filters. Examples illustrating the performance of the CF banks in image data compression are given.

The paper proposes an architecture for motion capture based animation systems, which works with several data formats and uses the building block paradigm for motion processing operations. Also, a user interface is proposed to perform an intuitive visualization of the animation main elements. A prototype system has been implemented, based on the presented concepts, and its operation is discussed.
